- TROJANS
- =======
-
- A 'trojan' is a program that pretends to do something useful while
- actually causing damage, possibly deleting files, encrypting an
- entire disk or damaging the system structure of a disk and so
- destroying all the data that it contains.
-
- There are hundreds of trojans and a partial listing can be found in
- 'The Dirty Dozen' which was started with a dozen in 1985 and quickly
- passed the 200 mark.
-
- Unlike a virus, a trojan depends on the preparedness of a user to
- try out an unknown program which promises some particular benefit.
-
- The best protection against trojans is only to use software from a
- reputable source.
-
- It is not the intention to catalogue trojans but where trojans have
- been mistaken as viruses or where they have caused sufficient
- distress to be included in one of the scanning programs listed, then
- a record is included for completeness.
