- SIPlus (Systems Information Plus) provides a vast range of information
- about your hardware. Not everything will make sense to you, but since
- you probably never have any need to know the details just take it
- for granted that what is displayed is the information your
- system is prepared to reveal.
-
- Not all computers will have the same information displayed,
- on some models, almost nothing of interest is shown as it is
- not possible to retrieve that information.
-
- I started writing SIPlus many moons ago because I was curious
- just what type of computer was sold to me and how accurate
- the sales persons statements where.
-
- This has annoyed quite a few hardware people who objected to
- the program showing just what a load of rubbish their
- machines are. Unfortunately, their bribes consisted of the
- types of machines the program was showing up as bad, so
- instead of accepting free computers so I could adjust SIPlus
- to accommodate their incompatibilities, I've decided to put
- a compatibility rating (CCR) into the program.
-
- A CCR of 100% indicates that it is, from a programming point
- of view, 100% compatible with the equivalent IBM machine,
- i.e. an AT or XT. IBM PS/2 models do not show up 100% since
- IBM has changed a lot of things internally. As I am not rich
- enough to afford one of those, I'll have to wait till some
- clones appear on the market.
-
- A CCR of less than 60% means that you've been had. To date,
- I have been made aware of only one such computer. The CCR is
- calculated by evaluating tests based on IBM Technical
- Documentation.
-
- POTENTIAL PROBLEMS using SIPLUS:
-
- On some computers, SIPLUS will simply lock-up the system,
- i.e., a complete systems crash will eventuate. This will
- be due to some timing errors or possibly to a flaky CPU.
- If SiPlus locks up on you, do the following:
-
- Set an environment variable called CA-STAT to contain either
- NOCPU or NOROM.
-
- i.e., from DOS key in (no '"') "SET CA-STAT=NOCPU<Enter>"
- or "SET CA-STAT=NOROM<Enter>"
- or both "SET CA-STAT=NOCPU NOROM<Enter>"
-
- NOCPU tells SIPlus not to perform a CPU test, while
- NOROM tells SIPlus not to perform a ROM test / search.
-
- Unfortunately, it is not possible to trap the errors created
- by these tests programatically as the program never gets to
- know about the problem....
-
-
- PRINTING SIPLUS information.
-
- Press the <Print Screen> key when viewing SIPlus information
- or redirect output to printer thus: "SIPLUS >PRN<Enter>"
-
- You will need SIPlus if you have problems with NBY, the anti-
- virus / Trojan program. (See NBY.DOC)
