- CA-STAT is a status environment variable used by cALMER Utilities
- .EXE programs. It is used to tell information to the programs.
-
- When talking about environment variables, non-computer experts
- tend to get the wrong impression that it is terribly difficult.
- In fact it is one of the easiest things you will ever have to learn
- about computing because you normally only have to do it once, and,
- because it is very simple indeed. However, to the programs requiring
- the information, it is absolutely vital that you key it in correctly.
- Some common environmnent variables are things like the DOS path and
- prompt statetements.
-
- To set the CA-STAT (stands for cALMER Status) variable, simply add a
- line to your autoexec.bat file, for example:
-
- Set Ca-stat=NOROM
-
- Thats all you have to do if you happen to need the NOROM value.
-
- CA-STAT tells several programs within the cALMER Utilities what is
- extremely important information to them. The following values are
- currently used, the are CASE SENSITIVE!
-
- NOHARD Tells NBY that you do not have any hard disks in case your
- computer does not report the correct information.
-
- SILENCE:23:00-07:30-02 Is used by NBY to automatically process key-
- strokes normally expected off you. You can define a period
- in any given day where NBY will determine the best action
- after a virus was found. The format must be exactly as
- shown above, i.e. colons and hyphens are needed, no spaces.
- The values are start time, finishing time and delay before
- processing in seconds. The above example would tell NBY
- that between 11:00pm and 7:30am, if after two seconds you
- have not pressed a key, to go on regardless. NBY will NOT
- remove any viruses in this instance and will NOT report
- to you in any other form, other than generating the DEL_VIRUS
- batch file. This feature is only active in registered versions
- and is primarily intended for SYSOPs who have automatic processing
- of files scheduled over-night. (I had to get up a few times at
- night when NBY found a virus, the feature is in there really
- for my benefit.....)
-
- NOROM Tells the utilities to suppress ROM identification. Use this
- if SIPLUS crashes your computer.
-
- NOCPU Tells the utilities to suppress CPU identification. Use this
- if SIPLUS crashes your computer.
-
- In other words, if your computer crashes when you run SIPLUS,
- proceed as follows:
-
- a) reboot your computer. (the crash is a total systems crash
- due to the fact the the CPU has lost track completely.
- This happens on inferior computers only should NOT be the
- case under normal circumstances.
-
- b) before running SIPLUS again, key in from DOS:
-
- Set ca-stat = NOROM NOCPU
-
- to suppress both ROM and CPU identification.
- SIPLUS should now run without crashing the system.
-
- Now, try removing either NOROM or NOCPU, and run it
- again. If it crashes, you'll know that whichever you
- removed is the one causing the problem.
- On really shoddy computers you will need to have both
- values set permanently.
- If this is the case on your computer, you MUST add the
- above set command in your AUTOEXEC.BAT.
-
-
- NOVIRUS Tells the utilities to suppress anti-virus checking. The word
- NoVirus is CASE SENSITIVE. This is only available in registered
- versions of the utilities since there is a rescue disk in existance
- in that instance.
-
- Using this speeds up execution of the programs.
-
- If you us this option, you MUST run NBY in your autoexec
- BEFORE you set the environment variable. This will ensure that
- NBY does a self-test every time. Then, if NBY complains, you'll
- know that something is wrong. If that is the case, set
- CA-STA=NoVirus, then run NBY against itself, i.e.:
- "NBY \calmer\nby.exe<Enter>" from DOS to see if there are any
- recognised viruses.
-
-
- NONBYROM Suppress NBY's ROM locking
-
- NORESCUE Suppress NBY's generation of a rescue disk.
-
- FORCEAT Tells the utilities that they are running on an AT
- type computer, even if your computer does not provide
- the information to that effect.
-
-
- ALLOWCT Tells NBY that it is ok for programs to change the file
- creation date of command.com
