  16. THE MICHELANGELO VIRUS
  17.  
  18. Fast becoming one of the most publicized viruses, the Michelangelo virus 
  19. has been the been the subject of much media attention in the last few 
  20. months.  First discovered in Scandinavia last year, the Michelangelo virus
  21. is now widely spread throughout the world.  According to one source, as
  22. many as five million PCs may be infected with the virus, 500,000 of which
  23. are in the United States.  On March 6, the birthday of the Italian
  24. Renaissance painter and sculptor, the Michelangelo virus will format the
  25. hard disks of infected systems by overwriting them with random characters
  26. from system memory.
  27.  
  28. How does the virus work?  The Michelangelo virus works by quietly hiding 
  29. in a computer's boot sector and memory and infecting all disks the computer
  30. uses.  The virus goes into memory the first time the user attempts to start
  31. the computer with an infected disk.  Once in memory, Michelangelo infects 
  32. diskette boot sectors as diskettes are accessed and the hard disk 
  33. partition table as files are accessed on the system's hard disk.  On 
  34. Michelangelo's birthday, March 6, the data on the hard disks of all 
  35. infected systems will be irretrievably damaged.

  37. The Michelangelo-specific Special Edition of Central Point Anti-Virus 
  38. detects and removes the Michelangelo virus and will restore the hard 
  39. disk partition table to its original state.  If, however, the virus is 
  40. not removed and activates on March 6, the data will be unrecoverable.

  44. USING THE SPECIAL EDITION OF CENTRAL POINT ANTI-VIRUS
  45.  
  46. To detect and remove the Michelangelo virus follow these steps:
  47.  
  48.  
  49. 1.  From the directory the files are located in type:
  50.  
  51.      CPAV <enter>
  52.  
  53. A dialog box displays with information about this Special Edition of 
  54. Central Point Anti-Virus.
  55.  
  56. 3.  Choose OK
  57.  
  58. NOTE:  If the window is not displayed correctly on your computer, type 
  59. CPAV /video to get help on the video command-line.
  60.  
  61. 4.  Choose Detect & Clean.
  62.  
  63. A progress bar displays showing the percentage of directories and files 
  64. in directories that have been scanned.  The path line lists each 
  65. directory and file as it is scanned.  Viruses are listed in the 
  66. information area as they are found and cleaned.  The program, however, 
  67. does not stop when it finds viruses.

  69. You can interrupt the scan at any time by pressing Esc.
  70.  
  71. If the Michelangelo or Friday the 13th virus is detected, Central Point 
  72. Anti-Virus automatically cleans (removes) it and updates the Last Action 
  73. Taken information.

  75. After the entire drive is scanned, the Viruses Detected and Cleaned 
  76. window displays showing how many and what type of disks and files were 
  77. checked for the presence of viruses, how many infections were found, the 
  78. number of files or disks that were cured of infection, and the time it 
  79. took to scan the drive.

  81. When you finish looking at the report, choose Continue to return to the 
  82. main window.

  84. 5.  Scan each drive on your computer by choosing Select new drive, 
  85. selecting a drive, and choosing Detect and Clean.

  87. 6.  Create a directory on your hard disk and copy all the files from the 
  88. Central Point Anti-Virus Special Edition disk to that directory.

  90. You can now explore the variety of other features available in Central 
  91. Point Anti-Virus.  For information about features of the program, press 
  92. F1 at any time.
