- WHAT'S NEW IN GRABBER(tm) VERSION 3.92
- ---------------------------------------
-
-
- For those who are curious, Version 3.92 of GRABBER, a shareware
- release, contains the following additions and improvements over
- versions 3.91 and 3.91b. Corresponding additions and improvements
- have been made to the registered release.
-
-
- * GRTXT -- A new memory-resident utility first released with the
- V3.92 package. GRTXT is a spin-off of the GRABBER
- program itself. It captures character-based text screens directly
- to plain ASCII text files instead of to GRABBER's usual self-
- executing .EXE format. (It does not capture graphics images.)
- Multiple successive text screens can be appended to each other to
- form one continuous text file. In terms of loading and operating
- procedures, GRTXT is almost identical to GRABBER.
-
-
- * GRABBER -- On EGA and VGA systems, GRABBER now uses an improved
- method for displaying file name prompts at the top of
- the screen when the user requests a capture of a graphics image.
- Previous versions used BIOS functions to display the characters
- that make up the prompts. However, some display adapters have
- high-resolution modes which do not support the BIOS character
- output functions. And even in graphics modes which do support
- them, writing to the screen via BIOS can cause the entire image to
- become unacceptably skewed if the foreground program is running
- the display in a "tweaked," non-standard state which it doesn't
- expect to be interrupted by other programs. Therefore, V3.92
- draws the characters in the graphics prompts itself, using the
- font outlines provided in the EGA/VGA adapter's ROM.
-
-
- * GRABBER -- On VGA systems, GRABBER now employs an improved
- algorithm for determining the true location and
- layout of the video memory scheme being used by the foreground
- application, in both text and graphics modes. This results in a
- more accurate capture when the foreground program has tweaked the
- standard video memory layout, which is sometimes done to achieve
- higher performance, usually in graphics modes. This improvement
- was inspired by the now extremely popular arcade-style games
- "Commander Keen," "Crystal Caves" and others from the collection
- published by Apogee Software, which use advanced animation
- techniques.
-
-
- * GRABBER -- The separate GRHOTKEY utility has been eliminated.
- The user can now modify GRABBER's hotkey by using
- command-line parameters that are built into GRABBER itself.
- A command-line option is also provided which allows hotkey changes
- to be saved permanently to disk. The hotkey for the new GRTXT
- program can also be modified and saved using command-line para-
- meters identical to GRABBER's.
