- SOFTWARE REQUIREMENTS:
-
- PC/MS DOS V3.X
- PKZIP(tm) by PKWARE, INC.
-
-
-
- BACKGROUND INFORMATION:
-
- This program was designed to be an intelligent front end
- for PKWARE's PKZIP(tm) V1.X compression/archive utility. One
- of the main objectives in writing this program was to reduce
- the amount of user input required each time a file is ZIPPED
- or UNZIPPED. This program in no way attempts to facilitate
- EVERY archive convention offered by PKZIP(tm). Instead, it
- offers a modest selection of power options that will be of
- help to the average or advanced user in their daily
- telecommunication and archive activities. This version of ZIP
- TERMINATOR(c) is a full working copy. Please register your
- copy of ZIP TERMINATOR(c) so that you may receive the latest
- version of the program. Bolster the SHAREWARE CONCEPT by
- sending the required fee and information requested on the
- registration form which is accessible from the main program
- menu.
-
- The documentation for this program is purposely scant.
- Only those details not covered by the online context specific
- help will be discussed. If you have any further questions you
- may write to the author provided you have registered your
- copy of THE ZIP TERMINATOR(c).

- INSTALL THE ZIP TERMINATOR(c):
-
- THE ZIP TERMINATOR(c) operates most efficiently when
- used in conjunction with a hard drive. You may also use
- this program with 2 HD floppy drives or any combination of
- hard and floppy drives. The minimum for smooth operation is
- TWO HD FLOPPY DRIVES. You must keep in mind that certain
- operations will require sufficient free disk space for
- completion. A good setup when using only floppy drives might
- consist of keeping all PKZIP(tm), THE ZIP TERMINATOR and your
- DOS shell program files on one drive and using your second
- drive as a source and target drive for all operations.
-
- If you don't have a sub-directory specifically dedicated
- to PKZIP(tm) and THE ZIP TERMINATOR, you should make
- one!(consult your DOS or DOS SHELL manual on how) Copy
- ZTERMIN.EXE, ZTERMIN.HLP, ZTERMIN.DOC and SAMCOM.TXT to this
- subdirectory. Make sure that ALL the files associated with
- PKZIP(tm) are in this directory too. HAVING ALL THE ABOVE
- MENTIONED FILES IN ONE DIRECTORY OR ON THE SAME FLOPPY IS A
- REQUIREMENT FOR PROPER OPERATION of all ZIP TERMINATOR(c)
- functions.
-
- Floppy users MUST put all PKZIP(tm) and ZIP TERMINATOR
- program files on one disk and use their other drive for ZIP
- TERMINATOR / PKZIP(tm) operations(ZIPUP SOURCE, TARGET,etc.).
- This mode of operation is restricted in scope by free disk
- space. A hard drive is recommended for best results.
-
-
- CONFIGURE THE ZIP TERMINATOR:
-
- THE ZIP TERMINATOR(c) may be configured from the main
- program menu or any sub-menu while the program is running. It
- is highly recommended that you configure your paths and
- parameters when running the program for the first time. You
- may use separate directories for the zipup and unzip process.
- Designate different target directories if so desired. Take
- your time and plan where you want the file action to occur
- for each of the functions. Make sure that you save the
- default parameters when you are done. Here is an explanation
- of the program parameters:
-
-
- PKZIP(tm) PROGRAM PATH: Drive and directory where
- PKZIP(tm) and ZIP TERMINATOR(c)
- program files are located.
-
- ZIPUP FILE SOURCE PATH: The directory path that will
- hold all files that will be
- ZIPPED up.
-
- ZIPUP FILE TARGET PATH: Directory path where the ZIP
- file will be created. This can
- be the same as the source path.
-
-
- - page 4 -
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
- UNZIP FILE SOURCE PATH: This directory will contain the
- ZIP file(s) that get unzipped.
-
- UNZIP FILE TARGET PATH: Directory where all the files
- that are removed from the master
- ZIP will end up. This can be
- the same as the UNZIP FILE
- SOURCE path.
-
- DOS SHELL PATH & FILE: This parameter will describe
- where the DOS Shell will be
- located and the name of the
- shell program. If you use
- PCTOOLS XTREE or any other hard
- drive manager just enter the
- directory and the name of the
- program that must be executed to
- make your shell work. You may
- even use the file COMMAND.COM if
- no shell is available. When you
- press <F3> the program control
- will go to the file you specify.
-
- ZIPUP FILE PARAMETER: THE ZIP TERMINATOR comes with
- -uz as the default. This will
- allow you to create and update
- ZIP files. Each time you ZIPUP
- you will be asked for a comment.
- Consult your PKZIP(tm) manual
- for more information on ZIPUP
- parameters.
-
- UNZIP FILE PARAMETER: THE ZIP TERMINATOR comes with -x
- as the default. This will allow
- all files within the master ZIP
- to be extracted.
-
- VIEW ZIPFILE PARAMETER: The default is -vd which will
- display all files inside the
- master ZIP and sort them by
- date, oldest to most recent.
-
- COMMENT STAMP FILESPEC: The directory path and file name
- of the ASCII text comment file
- to be used for ZIP stamping
- operations. The default file
- is SAMCOM.TXT which is a sample
- ASCII stamp supplied with ZIP
- TERMINATOR.
-
- ZIP/UNZIP --- PASSWORD: Place your choice of password
- for ZIP scramble / unscramble
- operation. The default is
- 'TERMINATOR'. No spaces or '-'
- characters allowed.

-
-
- FILE MANAGEMENT
-
- There is a solid case for not "re-inventing the wheel".
- THE ZIP TERMINATOR does not attempt to include sophisticated
- file management routines which are better left to your
- favorite DOS shell utility. Instead, it attempts to work
- synergetically with tried and tested file manipulation
- programs by offering a user friendly front end interface to
- PKZIP(tm) with the ability to jump in and out of your own
- favorite DOS file utility. Each screen menu includes the
- option of pressing F3 and jumping to the shell of your
- choice. The DOS SHELL PATH and PROGRAM NAME can be any
- existing file manager or utility that you desire. The ZIP
- TERMINATOR will 'spawn a child' with your specification.
- PCTOOLS V5.5 & V6.0, XTREE PRO and the NORTON COMMANDER were
- tested successfully. You may even specify COMMAND.COM so that
- you can have direct access to DOS. Moreover, it was found
- that many other types of application programs could be run
- without ill effect or fatal error. The ZIP TERMINATOR
- program is very small and does not reserve much memory.
-
-
- THE ZIP TERMINATOR becomes a super powerful utility when
- coupled with you favorite file manager. You may jump in and
- out of THE ZIP TERMINATOR as many times as you please, each
- time moving files, deleting, or testing UNZIPPED download
- programs for proper operation. THE ZIP TERMINATOR stays TSR
- only if you exit by pressing F3. It is completely removed
- from memory if you exit by the main menu. If you have jumped
- out by using F3, you can get back in by using the EXIT
- function of your utility or by typing 'EXIT' at the DOS
- command prompt.
-
- You will experience memory allocation problems if you
- attempt to go back to THE ZIP TERMINATOR by re-launching
- ZTERMV38.EXE instead of using your SHELL's 'EXIT' function.
- See page #10 for more details.

- MOUSE OPERATION:
-
- The two button Microsoft Mouse hardware specifications
- are supported by this program when used in conjunction with a
- color display/card that supports the IBM CGA C80 standard.
- The program's video mode auto-detect logic disables mouse
- operation if a Monochrome Display Adapter is detected. Only
- keyboard entry is functional in MONOCHROME video mode(IBM MDA
- standard). Logitech and all other Microsoft Mouse compatible
- mice should function properly. The program logic checks for
- a 'connected' mouse. You should not experience any trouble
- if your mouse is truly M.S. compatible, connected to the
- serial port or buss card, and the mouse driver software was
- installed prior to running this program.
-
-
- DIRECTORY VIEWS:
-
- You may view the contents of the ZIPUP SOURCE, ZIPUP
- TARGET, UNZIP SOURCE and the UNZIP TARGET directories by
- clicking the mouse button when the cursor is over the words
- ZIPUP SOURCE directory, ZIPUP TARGET directory, UNZIP SOURCE
- directory, and UNZIP TARGET directory. The following
- keyboard combinations correspond to the above listed
- directories: CTRL - A, B, C & D.
-
-
- ZIPUP OPERATION:
-
- This version will default the file list for ZIPUP
- operations as '*.*'. You may also select a single file or a
- group of files for a ZIP update. The directory for ZIPUP
- source files is the directory displayed when you are
- selecting a single file. If you don't select '*.*' it is
- assumed you want a list of files in that directory. Be
- careful......read the PKZIP(tm) DOCS. Plan your directory
- PATHS and ZIP PARAMETERS cautiously!
-
- Lists of files can be zipped in the following manner.
- Click or press enter when the file(s) you desire to add to
- the ZIP file are highlighted. Press <ESC> when you are
- through. Press #2 and enter a name for the ZIP file you are
- about to create. Select #3 and the list of files will be
- 'ZIPPED UP'. If you have already made an ASCII text file
- list(see PKZIP(tm) docs for further information) just click
- or press enter on that file when it is highlighted in the
- ZIPUP SOURCE directory display(press #1). The first character
- of the ZIP list filename must be '@'. Select only one list at
- a time.
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
- - page 7 -
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
- UNZIP OPERATION:
-
- The main thing to remember here is that only the UNZIP
- source directory is displayed for UNZIP file selection. You
- may choose from those files with a '.ZIP' extension. If you
- need to perform any file operations you should jump to your
- SHELL and then EXIT when finished. A damaged file or one
- that gives a PKZIP(tm) warning can be fixed by pressing F4.
- The resulting file will be placed in the UNZIP source
- directory. Read your PKZIP(tm) DOCS to find out how a 'fixed'
- file is created/processed.
-
-
- MAKE '*.EXE' OPERATION:
-
- This function will process '*.ZIP' files found in the
- ZIPUP TARGET directory. All '*.EXE' files will be left in
- the ZIPUP TARGET directory. The program does not provide any
- provision for changing directories other than declaring new
- defaults. Use your SHELL if you need to jockey files around
- to this or any other directory. The resulting '*.EXE' file
- will be self-dissolving. Please read your PKZIP(tm) DOCS for
- further information.
-
-
- ZIP FILE COMMENTS:
-
- ZIP file comments can be stripped, edited or stamped as
- you please when in this mode. If you select ENTER COMMENTS
- from the menu you will be shown the original ZIP file comment
- and then asked for new comment text. The new comment will
- consist of the text you enter and nothing more(as if you were
- using the '-z' parameter). Just press <RETURN> if you wish to
- strip the existing comment text completely from the file.
-
-
- The STAMP ZIP FILE option stamps a selected ZIP file
- with an ASCII text file that you create on your own favorite
- word processor(if your word processor doesn't handle ASCII
- text files....get one!). The file SAMCOM.TXT was included
- with the files you received with the main program. Use this
- file to stamp and experiment(modify it any way you wish).
- The ASCII comment file limit is 2048 characters including
- spaces, linefeeds and carriage returns. You may specify a
- default stamp text file in the ZTERMIN.CFG file(use 'F5 -
- Change Defaults' to specify your choice) or select from any
- '*.TXT' ASCII text file in the PKZIP(tm)/ZIP TERMINATOR
- default directory by using menu option #1. There is no size
- limitation on the ZIP file that you wish to stamp!
-
- All ZIP file COMMENT task requests will be directed
- toward the ZIPUP TARGET DIRECTORY. Place all files you wish
- to add comments to in this directory using your own favorite
- DOS shell.
-
-
-
- - page 8 -
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
- IMPROVED STAMPER/STRIPPER: (V3.0A)
-
- The COMMENT STAMP has been made a bit more SYSOP
- friendly and much more versatile for everyday use. You may
- now stamp a single file, a list of files, or all the files in
- the ZIPUP TARGET directory. The date and time file attributes
- of the new file will remain the same as the original file.
- The comment stripper exhibits the same versitality. Single
- files, a list of files, or full directory comment stripping
- is supported! The date and time of each file will remain the
- same.
-
-
- ****
-
- IMPROVED TEST ZIPFILE(S): (V3.3A)
-
- This option is available by pressing <F8> on the menu
- bar. It will verify a zip file for checksum, etc. Use this
- option if you have any doubts about a ZIP file after modem
- transfer, a hard disk crash, etc. Version 3.3A will check
- a single file, list of files, or all files in the Directory.
-
- PASSWORD PROTECTION: (V3.2A)
-
- Press <F9> to toggle password on or off. The password
- protect mode scrambles each individual file in the master ZIP
- during the ZIPUP process. This is the only time that an
- individual file or group of files can be password protected.
- The master zip file, the file containing the individual files
- you ZIPPED up, does not get the password protection. Only
- the individual files within are protected. It is therefore
- possible to construct a master ZIP that has some of it's
- files password protected and others which are not. This can
- be accomplished by adding one or several files at a time to
- the master ZIP and toggling PASSWORD on or off as needed.
- You can even have different passwords for different groups of
- files within a master ZIP file. The use of password scramble
- protection has many uses in corporate inter-office E-Mail,
- etc.
-
- The password can be changed by pressing <F5> and
- changing the password default parameter. Don't forget to save
- your changes when you are finished so that each time you run
- THE ZIP TERMINATOR your first choice password will be loaded.
-
- Unzipping a master zip file that has some or all of it's
- individual files password protected is easily accomplished.
- Toggle password on by pressing <F9> , make sure you have the
- right password(press <F5> to change it), and unzip as you
- would normally do. Make repeated passes if more than one
- password was used for different groups of file(s). You can't
- do any damage if you have the wrong password or the master
- ZIP you have chosen doesn't have any password protected files
- within.
-
-
- - page 9 -
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
- IF you convert a password protected ZIP to an EXE file
- you must use the correct password or the file will not self-
- dissolve. Assume the file you created was TEST.ZIP and you
- converted it to TEST.EXE. The password used was
- 'TERMINATOR'. Typing the following from the DOS command line
- will do the trick:
-
- A> test.exe -sTERMINATOR
-
-
- Do not use the character '-' or include any spaces in
- your password. PKZIP(tm) password protection is case
- sensitive so be aware that upper and lower case characters,
- i.e. 'Y' or 'y', are considered as being different.
-
- CAUTION!: Remember your password when zipping up. There
- is no way to unzip files in a ZIP file that are password
- protected if you don't have the right password!
-
- ****
-
- MEMORY AVAILABLE FUNCTION: (V3.4A)
-
- Memory available for SHELL launch or PKZIP(tm) operations
- can be found by pressing CTRL-F key combination while in ANY
- MENU or CHANGE DEFAULTS. Free memory for SHELL launch is also
- displayed each time you press F3 to go to your favorite shell.
-
- The amount of free memory reported is based on the total
- free contigious paragraphs(16 bytes) reported by DOS function
- $48 of INTerrupt $21.
-
- Reading the documentation which comes with your SHELL will
- reveal the memory required for proper operation. Compare this to
- MEMORY FREE to find out whether your SHELL will function
- properly when it is launched from THE ZIP TERMINATOR.
-
- THE ZIP TERMINATOR needs about 130K BYTES to work properly.
- This figure includes both program and data storage. The MEMORY
- FREE reported when using DOS V3.3 and running THE ZIP TERMINATOR
- from PCTOOLS V6.0 non-resident is approximately 445K BYTES. This
- is sufficient to re-enter PCTOOLS V6.0 by pressing F3 -DOS SHELL
- whenever it is displayed in the lower menu bar.
-
- The SAME AMOUNT of FREE MEMORY should be reported when you
- return to THE ZIP TERMINATOR after using your SHELL. The amount
- of MEMORY FREE will decrease if your SHELL mis-behaves and does
- not release all memory it previously claimed. Decreasing MEMORY
- FREE will also occurr if you do not 'EXIT' your shell and,
- instead, re-launch THE ZIP TERMINATOR by executing ZTERMV38.EXE.
- Doing this will eventually allocate all remaining memory so
- that even THE ZIP TERMINATOR will not work properly and you will
- be forced to do a hardware RESET.

-
- **** DIRECTORY PICK LIST: (V3.8A)
-
- A DIRECTORY PICK LIST is available when selecting directories
- for ZIPUP or UNZIP target and source paths. The left mouse button
- is the same as the <ENTER> key and the right button is equivalent
- to the <ESC> key. Pressing <ESC> leaves the PICK LIST with no
- changes made to the defaults. If you press <ENTER> while 'NEW ENTRY'
- is highlighted you may edit a new path. <D> = delete an entry.
-
- There are a total of TEN PICK entries. You may continue to
- enter new paths after the tenth spot is filled. Each new path
- will then be placed at the beginning of the list and the last
- entry(#10) will be deleted to make room.
-
- You may start from scratch simply by using your DOS SHELL to
- delete the file ZTERMIN.PCK prior to running THE ZIP TERMINATOR.
- This yeilds the same effect as running the TERMINATOR for the first
- time since the pick file will not be created on disk until the end
- of the first work session.
-
- Starting from scratch with all entries in the PICK LIST
- designated as 'NEW ENTRY' is easy. If you wish to use the paths
- that are already declared for ZIPUP and UNZIP source/target, do
- the following: 1)Select the path you wish to add to the list by
- moving the highlight bar to that path and pressing <ENTER>;
- 2)Move the PICK highlight to any position which says 'NEW ENTRY'
- and then press <ENTER>; 3)Press <ENTER> again when the 'EDIT TEXT'
- window pops up. Don't enter any text, just press <ENTER>. The
- path you have selected will now become part of the PICK LIST!
