- INTRODUCTION
- =================================================================
-
- PKZIP and PKUNZIP are powerful file compression and extraction
- utilities. What they lack, though, is an easy to use interface.
- PAKPAL solves this problem by simplifying and enhancing the use
- of PKZIP and PKUNZIP. Here are some of PAKPAL's features:
-
-
- - Menu driven
-
- - Context-sensitive help available from any prompt or menu
-
- - Text editor for FILE and ZIP comments
-
- - Verifies ZIP file updates
-
- - ZIP viewer
-
-
-

- LIMITS
- ------
-
- The following limits apply:
-
-
- Maximum files per ZIP: 500
- Maximum directories per drive: 500
- Maximum files per directory: 1000
-
-
- An error message will display if you try to load a ZIP file that
- contains more than 500 files. If a drive contains more than 500
- directories, only the first 500 will be displayed. Likewise, if
- more than 1000 files exist for a directory, only the first 1000
- will display.
-
- PKZIP and PKUNZIP also have limits of their own. Check your
- manual for specifics.

- INSTALLATION
- =================================================================
-
- PAKPAL runs under DOS and requires about 230k of free memory.
- PAKPAL will run on either a color or monochrome monitor. Four
- files must be loaded before running PAKPAL:
-
- PAKPAL.EXE
- PAKPAL.HLP
- PKZIP.EXE
- PKUNZIP.EXE
-
- The latter two can be downloaded from practically any BBS system.
- It is important that these files be placed in a directory that is
- included in your DOS PATH environmental variable. This assures
- that all files can be accessed from any drive or directory.
-
- In addition to these files, PAKPAL creates temporary files which
- it uses to save the directory structure of your disk drives.
- These files have the following format:
-
- PAKPAL?.TRE
-
- where ? is the drive letter. These files can be erased without
- harm to PAKPAL since it will simply recreate them as necessary.

- =================================================================
- GETTING STARTED
- =================================================================
-
- After typing PAKPAL at the DOS prompt, the copyright notice will
- appear. Press any key to start PAKPAL.
-
- None of PAKPAL's functions will work until a ZIP file is
- selected. The SELECT ZIP function in the SELECT menu is used to
- either create a new ZIP file, or to select an existing one.
-
- If you want to work with an existing ZIP file, enter it's name
- and press enter. If the file has a .ZIP extension, it is not
- necessary to include it in the filename since it is assumed.
-
- If you enter a name that is not found, you will be asked whether
- or not you want to create a new ZIP. Remember, the actual ZIP
- file won't be created until files are successfully added to it.
-
- If you want to enter a ZIP but are unsure of the filename, press
- return and all ZIP files in the current directory will be dis-
- played. The current directory is the one that you were in when
- you started PAKPAL.
-
- If the ZIP file you want to use or create is not in the current
- directory, include the drive and/or path as part of the filename.
- Remember, only standard DOS file names can be used as ZIP names.
-
- If the desired file is listed, use the arrow keys until the file
- is highlighted, and press enter to load it. After a ZIP is se-
- lected, its current statistics will be displayed in the lower
- part of the main screen.

- SELECTING A DIRECTORY
- ---------------------
-
- The first step to adding a file to your ZIP is to select the
- directory where the files are located. You do so by selecting
- the directory from the displayed tree. If this is your first
- time using PAKPAL today, PAKPAL will read the directories from
- your disk. This may take a few moments depending on the disk's
- size.
-
- Below are the keys you can use while selecting a directory:
-
-
- ?? Used to move up and down the directory tree.
-
- ENTER Selects highlighted directory and displays all
- files in it.
-
- F4 Displays all drives available. Select one to
- switch to, or press ESC to remain on current
- drive.
-
- F8 If you have added a directory since PAKPAL last
- read the drive, it will not be displayed in the
- tree until this function is run.
-
- ESC Exit this function and return to main menu.
-
-
-
- SELECTING FILES
- ---------------
-
- The next step is to select the individual files that are to be
- included in the update. Files that currently exist in the se-
- lected ZIP are UPDATED, otherwise, they are ADDED. PAKPAL dis-
- tinguishes for you whether a file is being ADDED (?) or UPDATED
- (>).
-
- Below are the keys that can be used while selecting files:
-
-
- ENTER Toggles the highlighted file as either selected or
- unselected.
-
- F6 Allows you to use a DOS mask to select a group of
- files. DOS wildcards, ? or *, can be used.
-
- F8 Clears all selected files.
-
-
-
- 6
-
-
-
- F9 Toggles between viewing all files, or just those
- selected.
-

- selected, PAKPAL returns you to the directory
- selection screen.

- following prompt:
-
- Delete files after being zipped (Y/N)?
-
- If you answer yes, the files selected will only be
- deleted after they have been successfully zipped.

- ZIP COMMENTS
- =================================================================
-
- This function is used to create and edit ZIP COMMENTS. These
- comments are very useful for documenting your ZIP files. If the
- ZIP in use currently has any ZIP COMMENTS, they will be displayed
- upon entering this function.
-
- It is important to remember that this is not a word processor,
- but only a simple text editor. Features such as word-wrap and
- block commands are not supported.
-
- Below are the keys that can be used editing ZIP comments:
-
-
- ? ? These cursor keys are used to move from line to
- line. Moving to the end of one page will bring
- you to the next.
-
- - ? These cursor keys are used to move within a line. >
-
- PgUp Moves to previous page.
-
- PgDn Moves to next page.
-
- Ctrl-Y Erases line.
-
- Home Moves cursor to beginning of line.
-
- End Moves cursor to end of line.
-
- Insert Toggles insert on and off. Text will only advance
- forward within the current line.
-
- F10 Updates ZIP file with comments. If comments have
- not been changed, returns PAKPAL to main menu.
-
- ESC Exits function without modifying ZIP file.

- FILE COMMENTS
- =================================================================
-
- FILE COMMENTS works very much like ZIP COMMENTS. The major
- difference is that you are entering comments on a file-by-file
- basis.
-
- If you enter comments for a file name TEST.C, and then delete
- that file from the ZIP, the comments entered for that file get
- deleted also. ZIP Comments however, are only deleted when the
- ZIP file itself is deleted.
-
- All of the keys describe in ZIP comments work for this function.
