- Non-commercial users are granted a limited licence to use QT-
- QUOTE without any registration fee (registration is optional) or
- payment being made to the author, though voluntary contributions
- would be gratefully accepted.
-
- Bulletin Board system operators who levy a charge for the use of
- their boards, apart from those that charge only for the use of
- special features such as second-lines, etc, must register their
- copies of QT-QUOTE with the author and pay the registration fee
- of 10 Pounds sterling.
-
- All users are granted a limited licence, and are encouraged, to
- copy and distribute QT-QUOTE provided the following conditions
- are met:
-
- 1. QT-QUOTE must be distributed in absolute unmodified-
- form, including all the associated files.
-
- 2. QT-QUOTE may not be distributed with or as part of
- another product without prior consent from the author.

- REGISTRATION
-
- Registration of QT-QUOTE is not essential but it helps us to
- support our software. The suggested registration fee is 2
- postcards. Please send them to the addresses below. But what's
- in it for you?
-
- 1. Information on updates to QT-QUOTE and its associated
- files, and new releases.
-
- 2. If you run a bulletin board you will get your name and
- number in the special advertising supplement,
- GOODGUY.LST.
-
- Even if you don't wish to register your copy of QT-QUOTE, please
- write to us telling us who you are, where you live and where you
- got your copy of QT-QUOTE from. We like to know (just out of sheer
- curiosity) where our software has managed to spread to, and how
- effectively the software filters through to different places.
- Just because you haven't registered doesn't mean we don't want to
- hear from you.
-
- Send the postcards (preferably picture postcards) to the follow-
- ing addresses. Similarly all comments, suggestions, and contri-
- butions (even quotes) would be greatly appreciated, and should be
- sent to:

- INSTALLATION
-
- You won't need to create a suitably named directory. We have
- made it sit in the directory \QUOTE automatically when you
- unarchive it. This has several advantages:
-
- 1. It suggests what the directory holds.
-
- 2. It's not copyright.
-
- 3. Many others that we haven't though of yet.
-
- The archive is self extracting. To cause it to discharge itself
- all over your hard disc, type QT-QUOTE. You will now find a
- directory C:\QUOTE full of the quote code and files.
-
- You should find in the recently-created directory the following
- files:
-
- 00HISTOR The history of the quote program.
- BBSQUOTE.BAT Creates QUOTE.ANS and QUOTE.ASC for BB use.
- GOODGUY.LST The list of good guys who registered.
- QINTRO.ASC \
- QINTRO.ANS \ The files that sit around the quote when
- QOUTRO.ASC / created for BB use. ASC is ASCII, ANS is ANSI!
- QOUTRO.ANS /
- QUOTE.DOC You need to ask? You're reading it.
- QUOTE.EXE Run this for a nice quote.
- QUOTES.TXT The file full of quotes.
-
- You should now run QUOTE. The slight delay (as described by the
- unarching program) will be due to QT-QUOTE creating the index.
- It shouldn't be more than 5 minutes on the slowest of machines
- (as Mark Burton can vouch for after trying it on a 4.77MHz PC).

-
-
- USING QT-QUOTE
-
- Most of what you need to do to run quote is completely obvious.
- The simplest way is just to type:
-
- QUOTE
-
- This will pop up a window onto the screen containing the
- quotation, and who said it.
-
- Of course, there's always some pedant who wants to try and do
- something clever with his favourite program (QT-QUOTE). So
- especially for Dave Gorski, here are the switches:
-
-
-
- /h HELP
-
- The most important option. Allows you to see the available
- command line options when you've thrown the documents away.
-
-
-
- /q QUOTE FILE
-
- Allows you to specify the path for the quote file. It will
- otherwise try to use the file QUOTE.TXT in the current directory
- if one exists. If it doesn't find it there, it tries for
- QUOTES.TXT in the directory containing the QT-QUOTE program.
-
- eg. /q c:\quotes\quotes.txt
-
- This is useful for having your quotes in a separate directory
- from where you run it. Why you'd want to do this, we don't
- know... You might of course, have several separate quote files.
-
- The quotes file may be given any name but the index file will
- always have the extension .IDX. This means you can not have
- multiple quote files names, for example, QUOTE.1, QUOTE.2 and
- QUOTE.3 as the index file would be QUOTE.IDX for all of them.
-
-
-
- /x SILENT MODE
-
- Inhibits the credits window (boo hoo) and some of the less impor-
- tant warning messages. The title message can be removed while it
- is being displayed by pressing a key.
-
-
-
-

-
-
-
- /i INDEX
-
- This switch forces the quote file to be indexed. Usually QT-
- QUOTE will automatically index the data files if they are newer
- than their associated indexes. It does this by checking file
- times.
-
-
-
- /S STATISTICS
-
- Displays statistics on the current quote and index files, along
- with a list of subjects and the number of quotes in each (smart
- eh?). Note the subtle difference in case between this and the
- next option.
-
-
-
- /s SUBJECT
-
- Allows the quotes to be restricted to only those of a certain
- subject. Bear in mind that the quote numbers will relate to the
- number of the quote in the selected subject, as opposed to the
- number of the quote in the quote file.
-
- eg. /s oneliners
-
- This example will cause QT-QUOTE to select only the oneliners
- quotes.
-
-
-
- /d DELAY
-
- Specifies the number of seconds that the quote will be displayed
- (either in normal windowed mode or carousel mode)
-
- eg. /d 10
-
- This example will cause a 10 second delay before bringin up the
- next quote.
-
-
-
- /c CAROUSEL MODE
-
- Selects carousel mode. In this mode, random quotes are displayed
- from at 10 second intervals (by default). It is possible to move
- onto the next quote at any time by pressing any key. To quit
- carousel mode press ESC.
-
-
-
-
-
-
- 7
- QT_QUOTE v2.01 Copyright (C) CTS 1991
-
-
-
- /f FILE MODE
-
- Forces quotes to be sent to STDOUT instead of being displayed in
- a text window. Quote also automatically sends quotes to STDOUT
- if the program output is redirected on the command-line.
-
- eg. quote /f
- quote > test
-
- The second will send the output to the standard output stream.
- In the second case, this is redirected to the test file. Note
- that QT-QUOTE knows you are redirecting and does not bother with
- output in a window.
-
-
-
- /p PRINTER
-
- This is like the above /f option, except the output is formatted
- for an Epson compatible printer. If the output is not redirected
- on the command line then quotes are sent to PRN:, otherwise they
- are sent to the standard output stream. The /p option may also be
- followed by a number specifying the page length in lines.
-
- eg. QUOTE /p >LPT2
-
- Which would print on the second parallel printer.
-
- eg. QUOTE /p 675 >COM1
-
- Would print on COM1 using 675-line pages...
-
- Please note that this will seriously damage your stock of blank
- paper. You tend only to get an average of 10 quotes on a page
- and that's around 500 sheets of paper. For your own sake, don't
- have your printer in manual feed mode...
-
-
-
- QUOTE SELECTION
-
- If you particularly like one such quote, or a particular range
- (I'd recommend 307-321), you should use this option. Note that
- the spaces around the ' - ' character are essential.
-
- eg. QUOTE 1 - 10 Displays the quotes 1 to 10
- QUOTE 50 to 100 Displays the quotes 50 to 100
- QUOTE 4000 - Displays the quotes from 4000
- QUOTE 1 4 6 - 10 Displays quotes 1, 4, and 6 to 10

- USE WITH BULLETIN BOARDS
-
- Although we used to have some experience of running previous
- versions of QT-QUOTE on bulletin boards a few years back, we
- can't really claim that any more. So this might not work for all
- bulletin board software, although it worked with a QBBS running
- Binkley...
-
- Quite simply, have your BinkleyTerm batch file run BBSQUOTE.BAT
- after each user logs out of the bulletin board. If you're not
- running a mailer then CALL BBSQUOTE.BAT should be added to your
- BBS autoexec file before the BBS software is executed. The
- BBSQUOTE batch file will generate the WELCOME.ANS and WELCOME.ASC
- files as seen in the previous version, QQTF 1.04, before each
- user.
-
- You will probably need to modify the BBSQUOTE.BAT file to copy
- the WELCOME.A?? files into your miscellaneous text files
- directory where the BBS software can find them.
-
- If you normally have your welcome file doing something then
- append your existing files to QOUTRO.ASC and QOUTRO.ANS. These
- two files are displayed directly after the quote. Should you
- want something before the quote as well, then have this in the
- QINTRO.A?? files.

- KNOWN PROBLEMS
-
- Hopefully this section should be rather short, but if you've got
- anything to add please drop us a line on the addresses given at
- the beginning of this documentation.
-
-
- * CGA Flicker
-
- This one was notice by Mark Burton while recently messing around
- with an ancient 4.77Mhz PC. Luckily this only affects very old
- CGA cards, and happens because QT-QUOTE accesses video RAM di-
- rectly for speed.
-
-
- * TABS
-
- Tabs aren't handled at all by QT-QUOTE. They get displayed as a
- circle and, hence, unless you intend to have lots of circles in
- your quotes use spaces for now. This will however be sorted out
- in the next version.

- ENHANCEMENTS NEXT VERSION
-
-
- * Events
-
- These are things that happened on this day in history. It could
- also be used to remind you of peoples birthdays as well if you so
- wish.
-
-
-
- * Quote file Compression
-
- Because the Quote file is getting so large and unweildy, we think
- this is quite necessary. We're currently experimenting with
- different compression routines.
-
-
-
- * Better BB support
-
- Maybe we'll have full Bulletin-Board support integrated into the
- program this time... It all depends on whether SysOps can help
- us by telling us the best way to install quote. Answers on a
- postcard please. Automatic installation may even be on the
- cards.
-
-
-
- * Microsoft Windows version soon!
-
- We've had quite a few requests for a windows version. Not much
- use for BBS support but quite nice if you want to pop up a quote
- while looking for inspiration.

-
-
-
- * David Tonge
-
- Who's fault it is that I ever got onto writing quote programs.
- He was the author of QQTF 1.04 and a major contributer to the

-
- * Gerald Iles
-
- For various ideas and comments, especially for sitting there and

-
-
-
- * Nick Waltham
-
- Thanks for helping to test the program. If anybody can
