- MARGARINE Version 1.0
-
- OK, why is this program called "MARGARINE"? Because it "spreads"
- the MARGINS of your text!
-
- So much for bad humor...
-
- If you evaluate a lot of shareware programs (and I do), you might be
- annoyed at how so many times the left margin of the documentation file is in
- column 0. When you print out the file, you end up with no left margin to
- speak of, which makes punching holes in the document for inclusion in a
- binder impractical. While some print utilities, such as Norm Patriquin's
- PPRINT (a great program by the way), allow you to specify a left margin,
- there are two potential drawbacks:
-
- a) If you select too large of a left margin, some lines will "wrap
- around" and cause the page lengths not to come out right. The only
- solution is to use LIST or another program to scan the entire text
- and find the longest line, then manually calculate how much of a left
- margin you can afford to have.
-
- b) Most of these programs do not run in the background like DOS
- print. In other words, your machine is tied up while the document
- prints. This can be real inconvenient for those 200K doc files for
- some of those monster programs.
-
- OK, Chuck, get to the point...
-
- MARGARINE 1.0 is a very simple program I wrote to solve both problems.
- First, MARGARINE scans your entire document and finds the longest line.
- Next, it calculates how much of a "buffer" can be added to the left margin
- without pushing the right margin off of the page. Finally, it goes through
- your document line by line and adds the appropriate "padding" to the left
- margin, writing the new lines to a file that you specify. The document can
- then be printed using the DOS print command. It will retain the same format
- as it originally had, only it will have the largest left margin possible.
-
- Simply enter MARGTEXT at the DOS prompt. At the prompts, enter the
- name of the ASCII TEXT FILE you want modified, and the name of the new
- output file (where you want the file with expanded margins to go). That's
- all there is to it.
-
- If you like this program, your voluntary contribution of $5 would be
- appreciated. Anyone, however, may use the program without restriction. I
- would be happy to hear comments and I guarantee a response. I may be

- P.S. Support your favorite shareware programs! I'm not talking
- about rinky-dink little programs like this, but those big programs out
- there. Forget all the legal reasons to do so: the support and individual
- attention that you get when you register is something most of us would
- gladly pay double or triple the price asked for. SUPPORT SHAREWARE!
