- Shoebox: a data management program for the field linguist
-
- Version 1.2a
-
- **************************************************************
- When unzipping the file SH12A.ZIP, you should use the -d option
- in order to preserve the subdirectory structure. If you didn't do
- this, it might be best to delete all the files except SH12A.ZIP
- and start over:
- 1. Make a directory called SHOEBOX and place SH12A.ZIP in it.
- 2. Unzip the file using the -d option (unzip -d sh12a).
- 3. Look at FILES.LST to see if you got everything right.
- 4. Add C:\SHOEBOX (or whatever) to your MS-DOS PATH string.
- 5. Be sure that your CONFIG.SYS file contains these two lines:
- FILES=20
- BUFFERS=20
- (that is, 20 or greater).

- What is SHOEBOX?
- ----------------
-
- SHOEBOX is a database management program, designed expressly to
- meet the needs of the field linguist. Using SHOEBOX, the linguist
- can easily enter, edit, and analyze lexical, textual, anthropological
- and other types of data. For example, with SHOEBOX, one can:
-
- + Maintain a simple dictionary, or a more complex lexicon,
- + Interlinearize text, where new words are automatically entered
- into the dictionary,
- + Do grammatical filing and analysis of text data,
- + Enter and file cultural notes,
- + Maintain nonlinguistic types of databases, such as address lists
- or library catalogs.
-
- SHOEBOX contains numberous features that aid in accomplishing the
- various tasks that are often a part of linguistic data storage and
- analysis. These include:
-
- + A text editor for the entry and editing of data,
- + The ability to conduct very rapid searches; any data record can be
- accessed nearly instantaneously for editing or review,
- + A regorous select option that allows the user to view only those
- records that conform to certain criteria,
- + The ability to specify a special sort ordering, taking into account
- groupings of digraphs and characters from the IMB extended
- character set,
- + A flash card function to aid in language learning,
- + Functions to number and interlinearize text.
-
- SHOEBOX allows up to seven databases to be concurrently loaded, each
- accessible by the touch of a single key. Because each database can
- reference the other databases, information can be easily retrieved
- and integrated from any location.
-

-
- Getting started
- ---------------
-
- Shoebox has an on-line help system; just press F1.
-
- Each Shoebox database is contained in its own subdirectory. To
- load any of the example databases described below, change to its
- subdirectory and at the DOS prompt, type SH (this assumes you
- have added the SHOEBOX subdirectory to the PATH string; if you
- haven't, type ..\SH). Shoebox will automatically load the
- database (the first time you load it, Shoebox will reindex the
- data files).
-
- For an overview of Shoebox, work through the demo provided in the
- subdirectory DEMO. This demo also serves as a brief tutorial.
-
- We have provided a glossed full-length text from the Sambal
- language of the Philippines together with the lexicon and parser
- databases used for glossing. See the subdirectory SAMBAL.
-
- There is also a Grammar database. It includes an outline of
- grammatical topics which serves as a basis for grammatical
- description. See the subdirectory GRAMMAR.
-
- Since you do not have the full Shoebox documentation, we do not
- expect that you will be able to exploit the full power of the
- software. However, we hope that by using it at no cost you can
- determine if Shoebox is useful to you. I (Evan Antworth) am
- willing to do a limited amount of user support by e-mail or
- phone. Also, the User Services section in Waxhaw, NC can give
- phone support; their number is 704/843-6151. Please use
- discretion in asking for help.
-
- For information on other SIL linguistic software, see the file
