- Shany Inc. the United States subsidiary of Shany Computers, Ltd announced
- the formal introduction of its AlertVIEW network management software. This
- series of programs is an early warning system that alerts network managers
- and administrators of PC-LAN failures as and when they occur.
-
- "This product is the first of its kind," said Shlomo Touboul, the president
- of the corporation. "There are a range of products on the market today
- that permit monitoring of hardware, but no one, until now, has been able
- to monitor the Operating Systems, Network Operating Systems and
- Applications along with Hardware and Wiring. This new product, developed
- with the assistance of IBM in Israel, interfaces directly with IBM's
- NetView so there is complete and seamless integration between that product
- and AlertVIEW.
-
- "The heart of AlertVIEW is the manager module (AVM), stated Philip Lumish,
- the Senior Vice President in charge of the U. S. operation. "The AlertVIEW
- Manager can remotely control all of the various AlertVIEW agents thereby
- allowing the administrator to set up alert filters, customize the
- company's requirements specifically, and control the different agents
- available."
-
- In addition to the AVM, AlertVIEW consists of the AlertVIEW Station (AVS).
- This is the module that is loaded as a TSR on all PC -DOS and MS-DOS
- workstations. AVS detects application errors, malfunctions of the
- operating system, NOS and any communications problems. AVS uses the IBM
- SNA alerts format to report and describe problems that are discovered. AVS
- also indicates the application name and the probable cause of the problem
- and a recommended action to alleviate the situation.
-
- With AlertVIEW loaded on each workstation on the LAN, it presents
- information including:
-
- 1- WHAT - Identification of the problem source; the name and specification
- of the software that generated the error.
-
- 2- WHO - A full description of the error with problem details and
- recommended actions.
-
- 3- WHERE- A description of the hierarchy path from the focal point to the
- station generating the problem.
-
- 4- WHEN - When the problem occurred for a clear picture of the sequence of
- events leading to the alert.
-
- 5- WHY - The probable cause of the alert with supporting detailed
- information.
-
- Since AlertVIEW is especially appropriate for larger networks that are
- connected not only to other LANs but to mainframes and mini-computers as
- well, it is able to span the range of primary LAN software. It has been
- designed to work with LAN Manager from Microsoft, LAN Server from IBM and
- NetWare from Novell. AlertVIEW is fully compatible with the 802.2 standard
- thereby permitting heterogeneous networks including bridges and gateways
- to be viewed all at one time by a single management station.
-
- AlertVIEW comes with its own Application Program Interface (API) that
- permits company staff programmers to directly connect all of their
- applications to this management tool. The API is an integral part of the
- AVS module.
-
- AlertVIEW pricing is very modest in light of its capabilities. The
- AlertVIEW Station modules cost $4,950 for a license for 100 PC
- workstations. The AlertVIEW Manager module costs $2,750. Discounts and
- site licenses are available when appropriate.
-
- These first products in the AlertVIEW line will shortly be followed by
- additional modules that cover additional functions.
-
- Shany Computers, Ltd. is a long term supplier of utility software to the
- LAN Marketplace. For over 5 years it has been offering products such as
- SPOOL+ and PRINT+ to buyers of LAN Manager and LAN Server. Recently Shany
- has opened a facility in the United States.
