- BECOMING PART OF THE BETA TESTING PROCESS
- =========================================
-
- In order to bring SPORT into wide distribution, it needs to be
- thoroughly tested in the "real world", using the widest possible
- variety of hardware configurations. There are hundreds of types
- of modems on the market, some of which may have special
- requirements that need to be discovered and documented. In
- general, beta testing needs to accomplish four tasks.
-
- 1.) Trapping Technical Errors. There are 100,000+ lines of
- programming "code" that make SPORT do what it does. There
- are bound to be errors in the workings of the program,
- because every single combination of hardware and usage
- cannot be foreseen.
-
- 2.) Clarity of Documentation. Although every effort is being
- made to make the explanatory manuals clear, the
- understandablity of the documentation, both in language and
- organization needs to be reviewed.
-
- 3.) Forms of Use. SPORT has been designed to be flexible and
- meet any kind of communication need. Now, put into actual
- use, and the advantages, problems and suggested improvements
- should be reflected back to the program designers.
-
- 4.) Marketing Suggestions. Ideas for the promotion and
- distribution of the SPORT package are welcomed.

-
- WHAT YOU WILL NEED
- ==================
-
- Beta Test Sites need a computer with at least 640K RAM, a hard
- disk, a modem and a phone line. The computer should be left
- running all the time.
-
- SPORT may be run in the background with Multi-Tasking programs
- such as Desqview (c). We can help you set up to work in that
- environment. SPORT will work in a 284K window.
-
-
- HOW WE ARE ORGANIZED
- ====================
-
- Because SPORT provides the easiest kind of communication between
- PC's, and can send, receive and process messages automatically,
- the bulk of the testing process can be done by Electronic Mail.
- Because SPORT is designed to be flexible, we will set up networks
- as we go. (The "topography" of these networks is a part of the
- software development process.)
-
- There will be several Beta Test areas, each with a Beta Test
- Coordinator. The Overall Beta Coordinator is Bob Ernstthal at
- Augustine Associates. When you run SIGNUP, his address is added
- to your Phone Index List as SIGNUP and SPORTDOC.
-
- Our Beta Sites will represent a range of computer experience,
- including novice users. We will do our best to accomodate
- everyone's schedule and responsibilities. The writer of the
- program, Satore Center Software, and the designer and
- documentation writer, Bob Ernstthal appreciate the effort that
- goes into the testing.
-
- We will ask you for a list of the hardware you are running SPORT
- on; make, model, drives, configuration, speeds, etc. Part of the
- testing cycle will involve running SPORT with as many different
- types of hardware as possible.
-
-
- We are maintaining a very important SPORT conference especially
- for Beta Testers and other interested parties on the Satore
- Center BBS. We urge you to participate, bring your questions and
- concerns there. Satore Center is run by the programmer of SPORT,
- so it is the only forum to get a personal response from him to
- your inquiries.
-
- The Satore Center BBS number is (415) 753-3356.
-
- We hope to meet you there!

-
-
-
- The criteria for being a site is interest, not experience. As the
- tests progresses, you will be provided with new versions of the
- software, which will incorporate bug fixes and suggested changes.
- These new versions should not affect your set-up, but we will ask
- you to update your program files when necessary.
-
- Beta testers are asked to be flexible, and to stay loose. Part of
- the fun and frustration of testing is that things will change
- from time to time. Communication between test sites and test site
- coordinators is essential.
-
- CATCHING BUGS
- =============
-
- We are all used to working with software that simply does certain
- things, shows up on the screen in a certain way and is always
- predictable. These programs have already gone through many cycles
- of testing by experts and by novices. From time to time a new
- version will be released including updates and changes. Our
- testing will be like this, only the original and updated versions
- are distributed privately to our test sites. Being a tester means
- you get to help produce the inital release product.
-
-
- 1.) Trapping Technical Errors.
- ------------------------------
-
- We need you to find the flaws, things that do not work as they
- are supposed to. We must first make sure it is not user error, or
- attributable to hardware problems. The Beta Test Coordinators can
- help you with the initial error analysis. The error needs to be
- reproducable.
-
- Testers will be unable to tell the gravity of the error.
- Sometimes what seems minor to you will lead us to a major flaw in
- the code. Sometimes what seems to be a major problem only takes a
- very small adjustment to rectify. You do not have to evaluate the
- nature of the flaws, we are only asking you to report them.
-
- If your system "hangs up" or stops working, remember that you can
- always cold reboot to reset your system.
-
- We do ask you to describe the errors and problems you find with
- precision. Not only what happens, but exactly what you were doing
- before it happened. Your SPORT.LOGs will help, but we will need
- to know the context of the error. Can you duplicate it? The kind
- of precision we need may take some practice for you to develop,
- but it is crucial if we are to make the program bug-free.
-
- The SPORT.LOG is automatically created and will show the activity
- on your system. This log is written into your SPORT subdirectory
- automatically.
-
- SPORT - Beta Test Document Page 3
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
- The current SPORT.LOG will be automatically renamed at midnight,
- if there is no other event happening. Thus, on 10/12/90, the log
- file, at midnight, will become 10120000.LOG, and a new SPORT.LOG
- file will start.
-
- We do not have to see your Log file(s) unless something unusual
- happens. Please keep an eye on them and be ready to save and send
- it in if there is something noteworthy. There is a provision
- from the Utilities Menu to insert a comment line into the Log.
- This will be very useful for us to keep an eye on special
- problems. Please try to become familiar with your Log and what it
- shows.
-
- The log files will accumulate, and should be deleted at least
- when a new version is installed.
-
- Mailer programs are extremely complex. Trying to pinpoint and
- root out errors is a large, brain-straining task. That is why
- precision in reporting of errors is the key.
-
-
-
-
-
-
- Here is a the "Bug Report" format we are using:
-
-
-
- SPORT Beta Site Bug Report
- --------------------------
-
- Please address this report to SPORTDOC. Please also file-attach
- any samples, log file fragments or explanatory notes which may
- help in tracking down the problem. The more specific the bug
- report, the more opportunity we will have to correct the problem.
- A message file becoming "BAD' is not necessarily anything wrong,
- it just indicates a "fail to synch". However, you should examine
- the circumstance which, if repeated, could indicate a problem.
-
- You may use this format to create a text file with your favorite
- text editor. Just complete the areas indicated and forward the
- report.
-
- Please rename this file with your name and the extension .BUG,
- and file-attach it to a message addressed to SPORTDOC. Please
- produce this report in ASCII format so we can process it.

-
- 2.) Clarity of Documentation.
-
- Ongoing changes are made in the documentation. Periodically, new
- versions are released. We are happy to receive messages with
- suggestions and corrections to the documentation through the Test
- Site Coordinators. Just like debugging the software, the more
- specific you can be, the more helpful it is.
-
-
- 3.) Forms of Use.
-
- We would like to collect from Test Site Coordinators the forms
- and methods of the communications networks and the uses to which
- they are put.
-
- Please play with SPORT. Use its features, call Data Bases and
- Bulletin Boards, up and download files, send mail to other
- testers. You will be given special access to Satore Center BBS.
-
- We would like you to use the EVENT feature to set up calls to
- other testers. You will be apprised of new testers; their names,
- numbers and hours of operation.
-
-
- Each Beta group will set up and trade preferred methods of
- addressing each other. With SPORT, it is possible to address
- messages to "aliases" instead of just phone numbers or net/node
- numbers. But, if you want to send mail to "Bob", I must have
- "Bob.FLS" indicated in the "infile" section of my RAW file so
- that when a message addressed to " Bob", is received, it will be
- placed in my Library, and not remain in my inbound area.
-
- As you become more familiar with SPORT you may be asked to look
- into the SPORTEX Remote Programming capabilities, and set up
- routed conference type mail using the routing capabilities of
- SPORT.
-
- We will also test the Remote Access capability, which allows you
- to perform certain functions your system remotely, and we'll run
- tests of the Remote Mail capability, which will permit you to
- send mail and read mail in your Library from a remote site.
-
-
- 4.) Marketing.
-
- Any kind of comments, suggestions and referrals in this area are
- welcomed. We will circulate drafts of texts we are planning to
- use in this context.
