- FileTag(tm) Version 3.0 Page 3
- A Memory Resident Program for BBS Downloading 08/04/90
- INTRODUCTION
-
-
- FileTag(tm) is terminate and stay resident (TSR) program intended
- to simplify and smooth-out BBS downloading. By pressing a hot-key
- sequence, you can "point and shoot" filenames while listing a
- BBS's file directories online. When you are ready to download,
- you can hot-key again and FileTag(tm) will automatically type
- the filenames you have previously selected. No more trying to
- remember strange filenames, scraps of paper laying all around,
- or having to go back to the file listing because you can't
- remember the exact spelling.
-
- FileTag(tm) should work with any 100% IBM compatible computer, and
- any communications package that uses BIOS keyboard polling, and
- now also works with interrupt-driven keyboard drivers. Video
- modes ranging from 80x25 to 80x50 are automatically detected and
- supported. 40 column mode is NOT supported at this time. Any
- problems with particular keyboards, computers, or communications
- software should be reported on The Central Command BBS at (708)
- 359-9346.
-
- FileTag(tm) is fully functional in it's shareware flavor. Regis-
- tration provides additional features, as well as removal of the
- closing message and delay. Refer to the COMMAND OVERVIEW for
- details on what features are not provided in the Shareware ver-
- sion.

- INSTALLATION
-
- Installing FileTag(tm) is as simple as copying it to your hard-
- disk. If you are running from a floppy-based system, copy the
- ".EXE" files to the floppy disk you start your communications
- software from.
-
- To configure FileTag(tm) for your communications software,
- simply create a batch file to execute FileTag(tm), run your
- communications software, and then uninstall FileTag(tm).
-
-
- The command lines for installing and uninstalling FileTag(tm) are:
-
- FILETAG /L <-- Loads (installs) FileTag(tm)
- FILETAG /U <-- Unloads (removes) FileTag(tm)
-
-
- If you were running Qmodem, your batch file might look like this:
-
- ECHO OFF
- C: {Log to drive C: }
- CD \QMODEM {Change to your Qmodem directory }
- C:\UTILS\FILETAG /L {Run FileTag(tm) from your utility directory}
- QMODEM {Execute Qmodem }
- C:\UTILS\FILETAG /U {Un-Install FileTag(tm) from memory }
-
- That's all there is to it! If you are using a different software
- package, replace all references to Qmodem with the name of the
- software you are using.
-
- Please note, the shareware version of FileTag(tm) contains a
- closing message and associated delay. Registration not only
- enables additional features, but will also remove this message
- and delay.

- CONFIGURATION
-
- The shareware version of FileTag(tm) now includes the FTCONFIG
- configuration program. This program allows you to select screen
- colors, toggle sound on or off, and to specify what directory you
- wish FileTag data to be stored in.
-
- To run this configuration, you MUST be in the SAME directory as
- FILETAG.EXE. Simply type "FTCONFIG" and press ENTER.
-
- FTconfig will read the existing configuration information direct-
- ly from the FILETAG.EXE file. After making any changes you
- desire, press the <F8> key to save the new information back into
- FILETAG.EXE. If you press <Escape> while in FTconfig, no changes
- will be made.
-
- Changing colors and sound
-
- After a brief pause, you will see a menu presenting the currently
- set directory, the colors in use, and the status of the sound
- toggle. Simply use the arrow keys to move, and press <F> or <B>
- to change the foreground/background colors. Pressing <F> when on
- the "Sound" line will toggle between sound-on and sound-off.
-
- Changing Directories
-
- Pressing the letter <D> will allow you to change the directory
- where FileTag(tm) stores it's file information. If you leave
- this field blank, FileTag(tm) will function as it has in previous
- versions and create it's "FTF.DAT" file in the current directory
- whenever you mark files. However, if you DO enter a directory
- here, it will be used instead.
-
- Pressing <ESC> will ABORT your changes, pressing <F8> will write
- them directly into the FILETAG.EXE file.
-
- NOTE: FTCONFIG.EXE is specific to each version of FILETAG.EXE.
- Do not try to use an older version of FTCONFIG with v3.0 of
- FileTag(tm).

- OPERATION INSTRUCTIONS
-
-
- Once you have loaded FileTag(tm), you may activate it by pressing
- the Control (CTRL) and Alternate (ALT) keys at the same time.
- Keep these keys depressed until FileTag(tm) activates. You will
- see a menu bar at the bottom of your screen:
-
- [D]ownload (00), [M]ark, [C]lear, [E]dit, [F]ile, [ESC] to Exit :
-
- A typical online session would go something like this:
-
- * Load FileTag(tm)
- * Load your favorite communications software
- * Logon to your favorite BBS
-
- Repeat the sequence below for as many files are you are interest-
- ed in....
-
- * See a file on the screen you are interested in....
- * Hotkey (CTRL-ALT) to activate FileTag(tm)
- * [M]ark the file
-
- Finally, when you are finished marking files....
-
- * Go to the Download Section of the BBS and select download
- * Hotkey (CTRL-ALT) to activate FileTag(tm)
- * [D]ownload the tagged file(s)!
-
-
- OTHER USES
-
- Keep in mind, FileTag(tm) does not really care if it is running
- under your communications software or not. You can use it to tag
- files while OFFLINE, perhaps while viewing an ALLFILES.TXT listing
- from your favorite BBS. However, it is important to note: FileTag(tm)
- creates and reads it's "list file" from the current directory,
- unless you have changed this using FTCONFIG. (See CONFIGURATION)

- COMMAND OVERVIEW
-
- D - DOWNLOAD
-
- Select this option to send file names that you have tagged. A
- sub-menu will be displayed with the following options:
-
- Download:
- [B]atch, [L]ine, [Enter] for next file, or [Escape] to exit
-
- Pressing [B]atch will send each tagged file followed by a car-
- riage return, all automatically.
-
- Pressing [L]ine will also send each tagged file, but will send
- them on a single line, each separated by a space, finally fol-
- lowed by a carriage return.
-
- Pressing [Enter] will send the next single filename, just as in
- previous versions of FileTag(tm).
-
- Pressing [Escape] will abort the download process and return you
- the main menu bar.
-
-
- M - MARK
-
- Your screen will change to Brown characters on a black background
- with a Blue Highlight Bar. Move the highlight bar over a file-
- name on your screen using the arrow keys, page up, page down,
- home or end. Select the file by pressing [ENTER] or [RETURN].
- Pressing [ESC] will abort and not select a filename.
-
- Each file name you select is written to a "list file". The order
- in which you select your files is the order in which they will be
- sent when you select [D]ownload.
-
- Once you have selected the file, or pressed escape, your screen
- will return to whatever colors were present before you selected
- [M]ark.
-
- Extra features available in the registered version while in
- [M]ark mode include using the [Insert] and [Delete] keys to
- change the size of the "filename window" to anywhere from 1 to
- 12 characters, to accommodate filenames embedded in a message
- instead of a formatted listing. Also, as you mark files, you
- will remain in [M]ark mode to more easily tag multiple files on a
- screen. Press <ESCAPE> to return to the FileTag(tm) command
- line.
-
-
- C - CLEAR
-
- This will erase your existing file list, if present, and reset
- your file count to zero. If you do not already have a file list
- created, [C]lear will simply do nothing.

-
- E - EDIT
-
- This option only functions in the registered version of
- FileTag(tm). It allows you to edit the contents and order of the
- files in your TagList prior to [D]ownload operations.
-
-
- F - FILE
-
- This option only functions in the registered version of
- FileTag(tm). It allows you to Save and Load Tag Lists to disk,
- perhaps to keep a record of your downloads, or to create "on-the-
- fly" tag-lists without downloading files already tagged but
- intended for a later download session. An example of this would
- be to [F]ile [S]ave a tag list with the name of the BBS you were
- on, so you could log on at a later date to download the files,
- and restore your original list with [F]ile [L]oad. You may enter
- any valid DOS filename. If the file already exists on your disk
- in the current directory, you will be asked if you wish to over-
- write the file.
