- <BBS> B
-
- BBS stands for Bulletin Board System (*not* Service). BBSs are an
- extension of physical bulletin boards where messages and
- announcements are posted manually. They are basically an electronic
- information exchange between {user}s (the people calling the BBS).
-
- The information or data available on a BBS can have many forms. The
- two most common ones are {messages} and {files}, but a BBS is not
- only a message-exchange or file-server. A BBS may access other
- programs, called {Door}s, which run outside the BBS.
-
- BBSs don't run themselves. The System Operator, or {Sysop}, takes
- care of the technical BBS operation. He assigns {user level}s and
- tracks user participation. Most sysops are {insane}.
-
- <The Pit> P
-
- The Pit is a free, public hobbyist {BBS}, operating 24 hours a day
- on an AT compatible. The modem is a SmartTEAM 2400 donated by Opus
- Computers of Haughton (949-3700). A 40mB hard drive is devoted to
- the BBS (I keep the big one for private development).
-
- The main BBS software used is {XBBS}, and yes, I wrote it. It is a
- highly programmable BBS software, giving a lot of freedom in
- designing the actual BBS and causing a pain in the *ss for the sysop
- who runs it.
-
- The Pit has an extensive {Library} of text files on a variety of
- subjects. {News} is accessible by topic, and New News will be read
- to you at logon.
-
- The BBS is {FidoNet} compatible, and can accept Crash Mail. It's
- address is 1:380/16. The {Fidonet} mailer used is BinkleyTerm.
-
- <Sysop> S
-
- {The Pit} is managed by {Hector} Plasmic. Unlike the Sysops of
- other {BBS}s, Hector is sane. He got his sanity certificate when he
- was released. I dare not reveal where he was released from; I hope
- it will suffice to say that he ate half the chairs there and was
- released in much the same way that tiny time capsules are. But he's
- much better now...
-
- A user can leave a message to the sysop by entering mail in the
- {Feedback} area.
-
- <User level> U
-
- There are two {user} levels on {The Pit} - New Users and Approved
- users.
-
- Approved means that you can be traced in case you get the {Sysop}
- into trouble, or annoy him and/or the users.
-
- You may get a voice call to verify you, and you may not. Sometimes
- the system just checks to be sure your phone is busy (by dialing you
- on another line) when you're online (so your {Call waiting} had
- better be disabled).
-
- <Call waiting> C
-
- Scourge of telecommunications, makes it very difficult to call
- {BBS}s effectively. If you don't disable it, your {user level} will
- never advance beyond New User, and you will be forced to log on as a
- new user *repeatedly* as your account will be deleted repeatedly.
-
- <Feedback> F
-
- Feedback is an area where you can leave a message to the {Sysop}.
- Please make {messages} to the sysop public whenever possible.
- Remember, other users may benefit by reading your questions and the
- sysop's answers, and naturally {Hector} is lazy and prefers to
- answer questions only once.
-
- To get to the Feedback area, hit F at the Main Menu under Other.
-
- <Hector> H
-
- A demented old ghost who runs {The Pit} as a hobby without charging
- anything (proving that he is insane, but don't tell him I told you
- that...). Hector has a prediliction for corpses and has been known
- to make fresh ones whenever {user}s annoy him.
-
- <Messages> M
-
- Public messages are the lifeblood of a {BBS}, so make your messages
- public whenever possible. After validation, {user}s are invited to
- participate in the Echos, national or even international {Fidonet}
- message areas, as well as the local message areas. Leaving good
- messages is a good way to get on the {Sysop}'s good side (that is,
- if he has one...)
-
- Messages are entered using a text editor that the BBS loads for you.
- The text editor has its own help file. If you're using the Full
- Screen Editor, CTRL-K followed by ? will get you a help screen or
- dozen. After entering your message and saving it in the text
- editor, XBBS will let you change the subject field or tell it you're
- Finished, in which case it saves it for all to read.
-
- To access the message areas (after you're approved), hit M at the
- Main Menu. Then hit Bulls for Bulls-mode; the easy way to read
- messages in all areas. If you prefer, you can Read, Write and
- Scan directly in the current msg area, or Change your current
- msg area. Bulls-mode is recommended, however.

- <Files> E
-
- {The Pit} carries several file areas. All file areas to which you
- have access can be reached from the Main menu...just change file
- areas. You can enter a question mark ? to list all the available
- file areas when you're at the Enter File Area Name prompt. While
- {Hector} isn't normally too picky about how much you download,
- you'll find an area or two is {Leech}-protected. If you maintain a
- 10% ratio, you won't be barred from anywhere. Remember, The Pit
- leans towards utilities and communications software. DO NOT upload
- every godawful game known to man and subhuman to this {BBS} or
- Hector will make a corpse.
-
- <Leech> L
-
- [Files]
- [BBS]
- A form of twit {sysop}s love to hate.
-
- <FidoNet> N
-
- A loose international affiliation of {BBS}s which allow {messages}
- and {files} to be passed around the world.
-
- <Library> R
-
- The Library is a {Door} that allows you to conveniently read text
- files from an archived library. Text files are arranged in sections
- so you can pick topics that interest you. {The Pit} is interested
- in any text file submissions you might like to send to the Library
- Upload Area.
-
- <News> W
-
- News on {The Pit} is topical and timely. New News is read to you
- when you log on (News is considered to be New for a day). When you
- access News from the Main Menu, you have the option to list all the
- News files, Read a News file, or Quit back to the menu. If a news
- file doesn't display anything when you read it, it means it concerns
- something you aren't eligible to read (whether for ANSI-only {user}s,
- higher {user level}s, or whatever).
-
- <Door> D
-
- Doors are external programs, like the {Library}, that let you do
- things that the {BBS} can't. Some are games (yech), some are
- informational, and some are educational and fun at the same time.
- Doors are available on {The Pit} via the Doors command from the
- Main Menu.
