  92.    GETTING STARTED
  93.    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  94.    The information provided below is to help you start the program for 
  95.    your hardware configuration.  For more details about the operation of 
  96.    the program press the F1 (function) key once you have started the 
  97.    program.

  99.    The following files are absolutely essential to run AS-EASY-AS:
  100.  
  101.             ASEASY.EXE    ASEASY.MSG    ASEASY.MNU          
  102.  
  103.    These three files need to reside in the same sub-directory.  In 
  104.    addition to that, if the files ASEASY.HLP, ASEASY.PRT, ASEASY.CFG, 
  105.    HTREE.EXE, and any Addins, are going to be used, they HAVE to reside 
  106.    in the same (ASEASY) directory as well.

  109.     AS-EASY-AS is started from DOS using the command:
  110.  
  111.     C:> ASEASY /Option1/Option2/Option3/.....     [ENTER]

  114.     Where Option can be one or more of the following:

  117.     /P       - Use alternate menu file (ASEASY.MN2) which provides
  118.                 command compatibility with version 4.00 of AS-EASY-AS.

  120.     /ATT2    - Enables ATT display graphics, video mode $40
  121.     /AUTO=File... - Specify the worksheet to be loaded     
  122.                      when the program is started           
  123.     /BK=x    - Set screen blank-out period to x seconds   
  124.     /CFG=xxx - Specify the configuration file to use 
  125.     /CTR     - Center column identifying letters
  126.     /DIR=Path..  -  Set the Path to the WKS files

  128.     /EM      - Enables mono EGA Mode

  139.     /VM=nn   - Use Virtual (disk) EMS model, nn-Pages (2k each)
  140.     /VP=Path - Set Path for Virtual (disk) memory File     
  141.     /V1      - Force CGA Emulation (normally on VGA Monitor)

  143.      Example:
  144.      A> ASEASY /H2/DIR=C:\Data [ENTER]
  145.      Starts AS-EASY-AS for a Hercules type monitor, using the second 
  146.      page for graphics, and instructs the program that the data files 
  147.      will be located on drive C, in subdirectory "Data".

  150.    RUNNING AS-EASY-AS FROM ANY DIRECTORY
  151.    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  152.    Make sure that the directory, where the ASEASY.EXE file is located, is 
  153.    included in your system's Path command.  This is usually done in your 
  154.    AUTOEXEC.BAT file.  Consult your DOS manual on how to set the PATH.  
  155.    The alternative is to set an environment variable using the DOS 
  156.    command SET ASEASY=d:\directory, where d:\directory is where the AS-
  157.    EASY-AS files are located. 
  158.  
  159.    If done correctly, typing ASEASY and pressing [ENTER], from any 
  160.    directory, will start the program.

  189.    directly from TRIUS, Inc.    If the AS-EASY-AS diskette you got  did 
  190.    not contain all of the files described below, please let us know.   
  191.    Note, however, that from time to time the contents of the diskette 
  192.    will change, with regards to the sample worksheet files and other 
  193.    utility programs may be added.

  206.    To Install on Floppy or Hard Disk:  
  207.    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  208.    Although the program will work if installed on 360k diskettes, we 
  209.    recommend that the program is installed either on a hard disk, or a 
  210.    high density floppy diskette, since this will permit the help file, 
  211.    the printer setup files, and other auxiliary files, to be available 
  212.    to the user without swapping disks.  If installing on 360k disks, you 
  213.    need a minimum of 2 - 360 drives, e.g., A and B. 
  214.  
  215.   * Place the AS-EASY-AS original diskette in drive A: (or B:)
  216.  
  217.   * Make sure the current logged drive is A: (Type A:, or B:, and 
  218.     press ENTER if it is not).
  219.   
  220.   * Type INSTALL and press [ENTER].  Then, follow the simple on-screen 
  221.     instructions to install your copy of the program on the desired disk(s) 
  222.     and/or subdirectory.

  224.      If you are experiencing difficulties with the installation program
  225.      you can try to manually install the program from DOS.  To do so, 
  226.      for example, place the   original disk in drive A, log onto the 
  227.      drive and/or directory that you want to install the program, type     
  228.  
  229.        A:LHA e A:ASEASY5.FLS         and press ENTER.  
  230.        
  231.      NOTE: If you are trying to extract the files on 360K diskettes, 
  232.            you will need more than one diskette!

  235.    On-Disk Documentation
  236.    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  237.    The installation process extracts a file called ASEASY.MAN.  This is a 
  238.    ready-to-print formatted, User's manual for the program.  
  239.  
  240.    Following the installation, make sure that the ASEASY.MAN file is 
  241.    indeed on your default directory.  Then, to print this manual: 
  242.  
  243.    (1)  Make sure that the your printer is ON  and there is enough 
  244.         paper in it (the manual is about 110 pages).
  245.  
  246.    (2)  From the DOS prompt, type
  247.  
  248.               COPY ASEASY.MAN PRN and press [ENTER]
  249.  
  250.         Note that if your printer is connected to a SERIAL port,
  251.         then you need to use the command  COPY ASEASY.MAN COM1, or
  252.         COPY ASEASY.MAN COM2 (depending on which serial port your 
  253.         printer is connected to).

  257.    New Features and Main modifications in Ver 5.01
  258.    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  259.    A number of new features have been incorporated in Version 5.01 of AS-
  260.    EASY-AS.  A brief description of these features is provided below: 
  261.  
  262.   <A> The EMS/VM module of the program was completely overhauled.  With 
  263.       version 5.00, users many times run out of conventional memory, and 
  264.       could not enter any more data, even though they had megabytes of 
  265.       EMS, or VM available.  A new, proprietary technique, developed by 
  266.       TRIUS, continuously performs an intelligent allocation of the 
  267.       Conventional/Expanded memory pool.  The end result is the capability 
  268.       to load worksheets up to 10 times larger that with version 5.00 
  269.       (provided the user has enough EMS). 
  270.  
  271.       In addition to that, the maximum amount of VM (virtual disk memory) 
  272.       that may now be used by AS-EASY-AS was increased from about 400k to 
  273.       800k.  Although users might think that even more virtual memory 
  274.       should be accessible, complex applications, using more VM, would 
  275.       result in inordinate amounts of disk thrashing.  Based on 
  276.       benchmarks and internal testing, about 800k of VM is reasonable. 
  277.  
  278.       An increase in speed was achieved in version 5.01, by going from 2k 
  279.       EMS/VM pages to 4k pages.  In particular users with VM applications 
  280.       should welcome this speed increase. 
  281.  
  282.   <B> Two new prefixes were added to the program, ASCII characters 174 
  283.       («) and 175 (»).  Label (string) entries preceded with one of these 
  284.       characters will result in the string being padded to the left («) 
  285.       or to the right (») with dots, filling the column width.  For 
  286.       example, for a column width of 10, the entry 
  287.  
  288.              «Total     would result in    .....Total
  289.  
  290.       while the label entry   »Total   would result in    Total.....
  291.       
  292.       These two prefix options, just like all others, are also available 
  293.       options under the /Range, Prefix command. 
  294.  
  295.  
  296.   <C> A Godsend to network administrations!  A new command line switch, 
  297.       /CFG=Path\Filename  now permits the user to specify which confi-
  298.       guration file for AS-EASY-AS should be loaded. 
  299.  
  300.       Now, each user, on a network, can have his/her own configuration 
  301.       files with meaningful names and in their own directories.  For 
  302.       example, 
  303.  
  304.                ASEASY /cfg=F:\MYFILES\JAMESQ.CFG
  305.  
  306.       would start the program and get the default configuration from a 
  307.       file called JAMESQ.CFG, in a subdirectory \MYFILES on drive F:., 
  308.       while

  310.                ASEASY /cfg=E:\GENERAL\HENRY_M.CFG
  311.        
  312.       would start the program and get the default configuration from a 
  313.       file called HENRY_M.CFG, in a subdirectory \GENERAL on drive E:., 
  314.       while 
  315.       
  316.       If the specified file is not found, the program will use the built-
  317.       in default configuration parameters. 
  318.  
  319.  <D>  New variables are now calculated and displayed when performing a 
  320.       linear regression analysis.  The new variables are the X and Y 
  321.       standard deviation, the Regression Error, the Slope Error, and the 
  322.       count of samples used in the regression (so the user does not have 
  323.       to use the @COUNT function). 
  324.  
  325.  <E>  The Data sorting routine was modified so that it now includes an 
  326.       additional two sort key selections;  Third and Fourth.  These two 
  327.       additional sort keys should be enough to cover the sorting needs  
  328.       of even the most demanding user.  In addition to that, the maximum 
  329.       sort range was expanded to 8192 rows.
  330.  
  331.  <F>  A new command was introduced; Range, Copy, Formula.  This command 
  332.       will copy cell containing formulas, while maintaining the original 
  333.       formula references (/CopyCell translates the formula references).

  344.  <G>  A new parameter was introduced in the /Sheet, Text, Find/Replace 
  345.       command.  In addition to the PU options, a new option, R, if 
  346.       specified, will now prompt the user to specify the range upon which 
  347.       the Find/Replace command is to operate.  If the R option is not 
  348.       specified, the command works as before, i.e., it operates from the 
  349.       current cursor location to the end of the file. 
  350.  
  351.  <H>  A new option is now available under the User, Install menu, the 
  352.       CMdStr command.  When this command is selected, the user is 
  353.       prompted to enter the default startup command line switches desired 
  354.       (remember to save the configuration file).  Then, when the program 
  355.       is started NEXT TIME, it would work as if all the specified 
  356.       switches were placed at the command line.  For example, setting the 
  357.       CMdStr parameter to: 
  358.  
  359.              /VM /E /RA
  360.  
  361.       would, next time, start the program using virtual disk memory, with 
  362.       EGA graphics enabled and the Round Absolute option ON (see earlier 
  363.       section for command line switches). 
  364.  
  365.       Note that if ANY command line switches are specified when starting 
  366.       the program from DOS, the CMdStr specified parameters are ignored.  
  367.       Furthermore, the new  /CFG  command line switch is not supported, 
  368.       i.e., it is ignored if placed in the  CMdStr parameter string. 
  369.  
  370.  <I>  The @LINK function was modified to utilize the path specified using 
  371.       the /DIR= command line switch (or the /File, Dir command), as the 
  372.       default - if no path is explicitly specified as part of the @LINK 
  373.       entry.  In earlier versions the current directory was assumed if the 
  374.       path was not specified. 
  375.  
  376.  <J>  A new menu option "None" was introduced under the "/PrintTo, 
  377.       Printer, Options, Pitch" menu.  This allows the user to disable the 
  378.       pitch control codes, normally sent to the printer, when using 
  379.       generic print drivers. 
  380.  
  381.  <K>  A modification was made to the /Data, Bin command so that it 
  382.       now correctly handles both positive and negative values.
  383.  
  384.  <L>  A new dimension of capabilities was given to the @USER defined 
  385.       functions.  In earlier versions, these functions could only return a 
  386.       value.  In this new implementation, user defined functions are 
  387.       capable of returning a string result as well. 
  388.  
  389.  <M>  A modification was made to correctly save and read the mode 
  390.       specified by the user (/User, Install, Video, X-User) from the 
  391.       ASEASY.CFG file. 
  392.  
  393.  <N>  A new video mode was implemented (CGA 40x25) for users experiencing 
  394.       trouble reading fine print.  This feature is something that many 
  395.       visually impaired users would welcome. 
  396.  
  397.  <O>  Given the two new sort keys and the expanded sort range, a rotating 
  398.       status indicator appears in the upper left hand corner of the 
  399.       display during prolonged sort operation.
