  9. File-Ex adds file management functions like Find, Copy, Delete, 
  10. Rename, and MakeDir to the Open and Save dialogs of Windows
  11. applications automatically. File-Ex also enlarges file dialogs
  12. to any size desired, and adds Recent and Favorite file/directory 
  13. lists.
  14.  
  15. If you have just installed File-Ex and are reading this from 
  16. the Notepad program, try it out now by selecting File from the 
  17. menu, then Open.  You should see buttons and the 'Recent...' 
  18. and 'Favorite...' lists at the bottom of the Open dialog,
  19. and the dialog should be larger (taller) to allow more files
  20. to be listed. (The default is still fairly small -- it can be 
  21. as large as the screen if you like.)

  23. If you need help, click the 'File-Ex' button, and then the 
  24. Help button from that dialog.  
  25.  
  26. File-Ex runs as an icon in Windows 3.1 -- you should see
  27. a File-Ex icon at the bottom of your screen (possilby covered
  28. up by the Program Manager or another program).  Click on this
  29. for the main menu, or double-click on it to bring
  30. up a dialog with configuration, help, & option functions.

  36.                     SOME IMPORTANT NOTES
  37.  
  38. There will be cases where File-Ex causes problems with a dialog,
  39. particularly in the placement of special controls added by an 
  40. application, due to File-Ex resizing and enhancing the dialog.
  41. Such issues are unavoidable due to the wide variety of program
  42. designs, but there is a way to work around most problems.
  43.  
  44. To fix this (and other problems, including possible fatal errors),
  45. you should be familiar with disabling File-Ex functions for specific
  46. application dialogs.  Please refer to the Help file for details.

  52. Our freeware program "Delayer" is also included with this package.

  54. While Delayer can be used for other purposes as you like, it was
  55. included here to combat a problem caused by some programs that
  56. prevent File-Ex from working.  This problem happens when some 
  57. other programs (such as Excite's "Direct" program) run after or
  58. at the same time as File-Ex, typically during Windows start-up.

  114. File-Ex will work with Windows 3.1 or 3.11, including Windows
  115. for Workgroups.

  127. If you're not familiar with File-Ex, please read the
  128. 'Overview' section in the Help file after installation.

  131. To install File-Ex, run SETUP.EXE from Windows:
  132.  
  133. 1. From the Program Manager's  File menu, select Run...
  134.  
  135. 2. In the Command Line box, type d:\path\SETUP, where 'd' is 
  136.    the letter of the drive and 'path' is the directory where 
  137.    the File-Ex files are.
  138.  
  139.    For example:
  140.      C:\FILEEX\SETUP
  141.  
  142. 3. Follow the instructions that appear on the screen.
  143.  
  144. 4. After File-Ex installation is complete, it will need to 
  145.    validate some files.  This will happen automatically the 
  146.    first time File-Ex is invoked, so you don't need to do 
  147.    anything special for this to happen.

  149. 5. If you're not familiar with File-Ex, open the Help file 
  150.    and read through the Overview sections.

  153. Technical information on installation
  154. -------------------------------------
  155. The installation procedure does the following:
  156.  Copy appropriate files to the Program and Data directories.
  157.  Add a File-Ex group with appropriate icons.
  158.  Add File-Ex to the startup group.
  159.  Verify that the operations succeeded.
  160.  Run File-Ex if requested.
  161.  Run notepad to display the readme.txt file if requested.
  162.  
  163. When File-Ex is actually invoked for the first time (through a
  164. File/Open or File/Save command, or by automatically loading 
  165. File-Ex), it validates the information files (fileex.hlp, 
  166. readme.txt, order.txt).  This ensures that File-Ex cannot be 
  167. modified and re-distributed with different company contact/order
  168. information.

  171. What files should be where, after installation

  173. These files should be in your File-Ex program directory :

  188. The file FILEEX.DAT will be copied to the 'Data' directory.  
  189. (This is usually the same as your Program directory, but may 
  190. be different, for instance, in a network environment where the 
  191. Program directory is shared.  The FILEEX.DAT file should be in
  192. a place not shared by users, similar to INI files.)

  194. These files are not copied anywhere, and are not needed by 
  195. File-Ex after setup:

  200. The files COMMEX.INI and FILEEX.INI will be created by the 
  201. Setup program, and will be placed in the Windows directory.

  203. The file FILEEX.LOG will be created in the Windows directory, 
  204. and is useful for troubleshooting.  If everything works after 
  205. installation, this may be deleted.

  209. About the Evaluation Period
  210. ---------------------------

  212. File-Ex is distributed as a shareware trial version.  This 
  213. means that you are free to try it out for 30 days. It will 
  214. be fully functional during that time, so you can try all of 
  215. its functions.
  216.  
  217. After using it for 30 days (not necessarily calendar days, but
  218. when it's been used on 30 different days), some of the functions
  219. will be unavailable.  You will still be able to use the file 
  220. management functions like Copy and Delete, but the recent/favorite
  221. functions, dialog sizing, and some other features will not be 
  222. available unless you register (purchase) the program.

  225. Giving Copies to Friends -- (Please Do!)
  226. ----------------------------------------

  228. Shareware works best when you 'share' it with other people!  If
  229. you like this program, we would appreciate it if you spread it 
  230. around.  Give copies to friends and co-workers, or even upload 
  231. it to your favorite BBS.

  233. Please only distribute the original compressed (.ZIP) file that 
  234. you received File-Ex in.  This is the only way to have the 
  235. complete file set needed to install File-Ex, since the File-Ex 
  236. directory after installation does not contain all of the 
  237. necessary installation files.

  239.   Note: If this is a purchased copy, please DON'T distribute 
  240.   it!  The registered copy contains your registration key file,
  241.   and giving this to someone else is illegal.  Please only 
  242.   distribute the shareware trial version!

  292. Troubleshooting
  293. ---------------

  295. Please see the Help file for complete information, but here
  296. are some important notes about programs that File-Ex will
  297. not work with:
  298.  
  299. File-Ex does not cooperate well with some other programs that 
  300. do the same thing (modify the file dialogs).  If you have these,
  301. then you should disable them when running File-Ex.  These include:
  302.  - Instant File Access (don't load it at the same time)
  303.  - Long File Names (some reported problems, but usually works)
  304.  - Norton File Assist (disable it from the desktop options)
  305.  - Q.E.D. (can't co-exist with File-Ex since it changes the common dialogs)
  306.  
  307. Some NetRoad versions prior to 1.41 will crash with File-Ex
  308.  
  309. If File-Ex does not seem to work when it's in the StartUp group,
  310. but does work if you close it and re-start it, then there is 
  311. probably some program in the StartUp group (or started from
  312. WIN.INI) that is interfering.  Please see the Help file for more
  313. informaion on using the Delayer program to fix this.

  318. Un-installing File-Ex
  319. ---------------------

  321. If you encounter insurmountable problems, or just don't like 
  322. the new functions that File-Ex provides, you may need to 
  323. un-install it.

  325. A Remove program is provided for your convenience.  Its icon 
  326. is installed in your File-Ex program group.  Please see the 
  327. help file for more information on this.
