[HDNG]YORK UNIVERSITY STUDENTS' UNION:[EHDNG][PARA][GRPH]P5[EGRPH][STAT][BULL] 6 sabbatical [BULL] Turnout at last ballot: 21% [BULL] Ave. turnout at General Meetings: 6% [BULL] NUS member [ESTAT][PARA][ITAL]YUSU's most obvious problem is that it doesn't have an SU building. They've got some offices in Goodricke College, but it's not really the same. By the end of 94, it should have moved into new premises, but it'll still only be offices. It's not an inactive union, funding sports, societies, entertainments and co-ordinating political activity. It's fairly moderate and most students aren't too interested in SU politics beyond their JCRs, but they turn out to vote (especially when it's about money or housing matters).[EITAL][HDNG]SU FACILITIES:[EHDNG][PARA]A shop; book market; essay bank; printing and typing services; but still no building (YET). A travel agency, and the bars aren't run by YUSU.[HDNG]CLUBS (NON SPORTING):[EHDNG][PARA]Aaardvark (something to do with Star Wars, The Pope, Lord Lucan and fish); Active Arts; Alternative Arts; Amnesty International; Anti-Sexism; Ballroom Dancing; Brecht; CND; China; Creative; Dudes; Edinburgh Festival; Film; Football Supporters; Freedom; Frog Soc (cuddly toys); Gilbert and Sullivan; Glee; Global Development; Goth Hippy Groovers; Juggling; Latin American Dancing; Methodist-Anglican; Modern Dancing; Multi-Media; Natural History; Outdoor; Point Shirley (Arts Mag); Rocky Horror; Sci-Fi and Fantasy; Socialist; Stephen Brocklehurst Appreciation; Student Christian Movement; Thomas More; Visual Arts; Wind Band; Women in Engineering and Science; Wine; WWF.[HDNG]OTHER ORGANISATIONS:[EHDNG][PARA]2 independent student newspapers, 'Nouse' (inevitably nicknamed 'no use') and 'Vision', which compete for the top student journo hacks. There are also 4 mags (feminist, arts, Christian and environmental). The University radio (URY) was one of the first and is [ITAL]among the most respected[EITAL] with a recent graduate going straight to producing the Radio 1 Chart Show. YSTV - the twice daily television station - broadcasts to snack bars and JCRs across campus and its SU election night specials are [ITAL]enough to get Peter Snow fidgeting with his swingometer[EITAL]. The North Yorkshire NUS Rag based at the University raised over รบ14,000 last year with stunts such as gnoming - students pay to have their friends tailed and annoyed by someone dressed in red and green with a fishing rod. The Community Action Project (known as 'CAP'), organised by a sabbatical officer, runs over 30 community projects, especially holidays for disadvantaged kids.[HDNG]RELIGIOUS:[EHDNG][PARA][STAT][BULL] 7 chaplains[ESTAT][PARA]For Anglicans, the Minster, home to one of England's 2 Archbishops, has an [ITAL]inspiring influence, which has rubbed off on other Christian denominations[EITAL]. Following an incident involving a Jewish massacre nearly 1,000 years ago, there is no synagogue in York, although there is a mosque.[HDNG]PAID WORK:[EHDNG][PARA]Plenty of pubs and a few restaurants during term time, and the conference trade brings opportunities during vacations.[PARA][PARA]
