There's also The Puppet Theatre (not just puppet shows), Maddermarket Theatre ([ITAL]quality [EITAL]amateur company), Sewell Barn Theatre (capacity of 110 in a converted barn) and the Whifler Theatre (open air in the castle grounds).[PARA][BOLD]Pubs:[EBOLD] [ITAL]Norwich has a massive choice of pubs from log fires if you want, to yuppy pubs if you must. [EITAL] It used to be said there was a pub for every day of the year and a church for every Sunday. In fact, there are only about 300, but then you'd be at the churches on the Sundays anyway. For safety's sake, there are a few other days you should take a break. [PUSH]push[EPUSH][ITAL]plugs: York Tavern; Garden House; Fat Cat; Bellevue; Reindeer (red noses and sometimes live music). Ironically, the University Arms is best avoided.[EITAL][PARA][BOLD]Clubs/discos:[EBOLD] (5) [PUSH]push[EPUSH][ITAL]plugs: Waterfront (eclectic, leased by the SU); Peppermint Park (smart and trendy); Manhattan (soulful); Ritzy's (naff, but fun); The Loft (gay). All cost between 3 and 4 quid.[EITAL][PARA][BOLD]Music venues:[EBOLD] The Waterfront hosts anything from St Etienne to Fluke. The Arts Centre (cap 350) has all sorts of music and indeed comedy. Some pubs are good for rock and local bands, especially the Oval[ITAL].[EITAL][HDNG]UNIVERSITY:[EHDNG][PARA][GRPH]E1[EGRPH][STAT][BULL] Price of a pint of beer: 99p [BULL] Glass of wine: ú1[ESTAT][PARA][BOLD]Bars:[EBOLD] (6) [ITAL]The University bars are a drinkable exercise in contrast. The Pub is crowded, noisy and sparsely decorated. The Back Bar (non-smoking) is more like someone's front lounge and good for a quiet snifter. And there's the Hive, the 2nd most popular. [EITAL] The Lower Common Room (LCR, cap 1,470) is used for gigs.[PARA][BOLD]Theatres:[EBOLD] There's a spanking new drama studio, [ITAL]and a strong thespy set, who took 2 shows to Edinburgh last year.[EITAL][PARA][BOLD]Cinemas:[EBOLD] Among the flicks shown recently by the film club are Another Stakeout, Ruby in Paradise, and Raining Stones.[PARA][BOLD]Clubs/discos and music venues:[EBOLD] The LCR is used for discos every Thursday and is a major tour date for some of the top name bands, such as, in the past year, James, Cocteau Twins, JTQ, Marillion, and Megadog. For more classical and conventional tastes, the site for sound is the small concert hall (cap 150) in the University Music Centre.[PARA][BOLD]Cabaret:[EBOLD] The Union's weekly free cabaret night ('Live in the Hive') has hosted the likes of Arthur Smith, Greg Proops, and the Doug Anthony Allstars.[PARA][BOLD]Other: [EBOLD]The [ITAL]incredible [EITAL]Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts on campus has [ITAL]a very impressive array of[EITAL] tribal and other art, built in 1978 by the guy who owns the supermarkets. [ITAL]Fortunately[EITAL], it's got a different colour-scheme. There are also 2 balls a year.[HDNG]EATING OUT:[EHDNG][PARA]On campus, the Refectory Canteen is open for lunch and from 5-7pm in the evenings. Alternatively, try the Breaker's cafe, the Hive, the Coffee Bar or the SU snack bar open from 9am till 11 at night.[ITAL] In Norwich, the student haunts are Pizza One (slabs of dough which don't cost stacks of dough), The Waffle House and Captain America's and Oscar's (USA diners). The list doesn't stop there, there's a plentiful belly-full of cheap eateries.[EITAL] The usual jumble of junk food is available till 2am, including the essential pizza deliveries.[PARA][PARA]
