[HDNG]INTRODUCTION:[EHDNG][PARA]East Anglia is flat as a pancake, in fact, flatter than some I've tossed. Norfolk, the northern half, also has the Broads: canals and rivers running all over the county like maple syrup. The county's largest city is Norwich, which a couple of hundred years ago, was also the 2nd biggest in England. But it was somewhat left behind by the Industrial Revolution and whilst other cities cottoned on to cotton or got cool about coal, Norwich developed a mustard industry, still thriving today. Now Norwich is a tourist attraction, market town and administrative centre for Norfolk. The University's 270-acre campus, known as University Plain, is 21/2 miles from the city centre between a 1940s council estate and the Yare Valley conservation area. Most of the buildings are concrete,[ITAL] but it's not a jungle. [EITAL]In fact, the campus is very green, but still flat as a pancake. A green one.[HDNG]ATMOSPHERE:[EHDNG][PARA][ITAL]In the past, UEA had a radical left-wing reputation. This has waned and socialism has been replaced by socialising. It is somewhat cliquey (and there's a large luvvy set), but that's not a problem for those who belong. For those who don't, the campus seems to be a world apart, and Norwich, a world away. This is, after all, a green field campus in the truest sense. It does, after all, have 2 cathedrals and contains all the usual amenities such as a very large public library, a whole range of supermarkets, late-night shops, bookshops, banks and well-located cashpoints. As well as the Cathedral, tourist attractions include a Norman Castle, which has been converted into a museum and art gallery, and a small agricultural museum. [ITAL] For UEA students, Norwich is like a warm duvet, nice and cosy, but down the road, so it doesn't really belong to them. It's also far from an ethnic melting pot, and non-white students have been known to elicit funny looks, if not outright hostility.[EITAL][HDNG]TRAVEL:[EHDNG][PARA][BOLD]Trains:[EBOLD] Nearest BR station is Norwich, 3 miles from the University campus. Direct connections to London (1:49hrs, 1/hr), Liverpool, Manchester, Birmingham, Peterborough and other destinations.[PARA][BOLD]Coaches:[EBOLD] National Express bus services to, among other places, London (ú10.75, 2.45hrs, 5/day) and Bristol (ú23.25, 5:40hrs, 5/day).[PARA][BOLD]Car:[EBOLD] The A11, A47, A140 and A146 all go via Norwich.[PARA][BOLD]Air:[EBOLD] Flights inland and also to Amsterdam from Norwich Airport.[PARA][BOLD]Local:[EBOLD] [ITAL]Buses are reliable and wide ranging, but expensive.[EITAL][PARA][BOLD]Taxis:[EBOLD] [ITAL]Many students have problems with taxis not arriving.[EITAL][PARA][BOLD]Bicycles:[EBOLD] Some provision of cycle lanes near UEA, [ITAL]but its advisable to wear a gas mask on the ring road.
