It runs its services with more enthusiasm than [PARA]commercial scrutiny and has recently found itself in financially [PARA]troubled straits. It places a lot of emphasis on its welfare role.[EITAL] [PARA]On campus, there are also a newsagents, a bookshop and a [PARA]campus supermarket.[HDNG]SU FACILITIES:[EHDNG][PARA]The Union Building in the middle of the campus has 4 bars, 1 [PARA]cafeteria, 1 restaurant, travel agency, 2 banks (Lloyds and [PARA]NatWest, both with cashpoints), general shop, Endsleigh [PARA]Insurance office, disco, library, print service and photocopying, 3 [PARA]minibuses, arts and pottery studio, vending machines and video [PARA]games, photo booth, pool tables, launderette, juke box and [PARA]function rooms.[HDNG]CLUBS (NON SPORTING):[EHDNG][PARA]Amnesty; Arcana; Astronomy; Bahai; Choir; Chemical; Critical [PARA]Legal; Duke of Edinburgh; Edinburgh Festival; Friends of the [PARA]Earth; Hellenic; International Forum (debating); Irish; Juggling; Live [PARA]Action Role Playing; Malaysian; Motorcycle; Pakistan; Paradise ([ITAL][PARA]goddy[EITAL]); Renaissance ([ITAL]hippy[EITAL]); Rough Diamond (live music); [PARA]Russian; Sci-fi; Singapore; Sword and Sorcery; Third World First;[PARA]Turkish; War Games.[HDNG]OTHER ORGANISATIONS:[EHDNG][PARA]The student newspaper, 'Concourse', is published, but not [PARA]controlled, by the Union. The University also publishes [PARA]'Grapevine', an info sheet. There is a humorous independent [PARA]magazine called 'Reagle'. The 'Arts Umbrella' oversees creative [PARA]activity of all sorts. The charity Rag last year raised รบ12,500, [PARA]whilst other do-gooders were involved in the Union's Community [PARA]Action group and Conservation Volunteers (which employ 2 full [PARA]time staff and a student sabbatical), or the University's Voluntary [PARA]Service, all working for and amongst the community.[HDNG]RELIGIOUS:[EHDNG][PARA][STAT][BULL] 4 chaplains (CofE, RC, Free Church, flying rabbi - what a [PARA]lovely image)[ESTAT][PARA]The big inter-denominational Christian chapel is a [ITAL]bizarre [EITAL]grey [PARA]brick structure, rectangular with 2 cylindrical turrets at one end. [PARA]Muslim prayer room provided on campus. In Newcastle and [PARA]Stoke, apart from various churches, there are places of worship [PARA]for Muslims, Sikhs and Buddhists.[HDNG]PAID WORK:[EHDNG][PARA]Few opportunities in the local towns.[PARA][PARA]
