[HDNG]STUDENT REPRESENTATIVE COUNCIL/GLASGOW UNIVERSITY UNION/QUEEN MARGARET UNION:[EHDNG][PARA][GRPH]P5[EGRPH][STAT][BULL] Sabbaticals: SRC2; GUU 0; QM 1. [BULL] Turnout at last ballot: 15% [BULL] Ave. turnout at General Meetings: low[ESTAT][PARA][ITAL]Glasgow has the most confusing set of student organisations in the country, but you can always rely on [EITAL][PUSH]push[EPUSH] [ITAL]to unmuddy. In [EITAL]Glasgow, there are 4 student unions, with 2 in competition. First, there's the SRC (all students are automatically members when they first come to Glasgow) which organises student representation, welfare and the student clubs and societies.[ITAL] It's not very radical, nor terribly high profile. [EITAL]Next come the 2 services unions. A student can be a member of only 1 of these and they must choose in their first few days. Very few opt out altogether[ITAL]. The rivalries are not too distinct[EITAL] and students can use the facilities at both most of the time, but can only vote in their own union. GUU is bigger (66% of students) [ITAL]and, some argue, better. [EITAL]It has a large centre in a listed building near the centre of the campus. It organises debates as well as services[ITAL] and rates with the Oxbridge Unions for the speakers it attracts. QM is a tad more radical [EITAL]and just over the hill,[ITAL] but offers the same sort of thing on a smaller scale. [EITAL] It has 33% of students. The 4th Union is the Athletics Union (see Sports below). None of the unions is a member of NUS.[HDNG]SU FACILITIES:[EHDNG][PARA][BOLD]GUU: [EBOLD]5 bars (including a cafe bar); cafeteria; restaurant; minibus; travel agency; print shop; photocopying; games machines; pool; juke box; vending machines; 2 libraries; meeting and conference rooms; launderette; Bank of Scotland and Royal Bank of Scotland cashpoint.[PARA][BOLD]QM: [EBOLD]2 bars; cafeteria; restaurant; sandwich bar; print shop; photocopying; shop; games and vending machines; pool table; juke box; TV lounge; meeting rooms; customised nightclub; launderette; Clydesdale Bank (with cashpoint).[HDNG]CLUBS (NON SPORTING):[EHDNG][PARA]Armed Forces Training; Asian; Campus Says No; Debating; Design; Exsoc; Gaming; Juggling; Research; Scottish Cultural; SNP.[HDNG]OTHER ORGANISATIONS:[EHDNG][PARA]The SRC publishes 'The Guardian' - no not that Guardian - the University's student newspaper, and it also runs the student TV station, GUST. There's a joint charity Rag between all Glasgow colleges (including the 3 universities).[HDNG]RELIGIOUS:[EHDNG][PARA][STAT][BULL] 2 chaplains (RC, CofS)[ESTAT][PARA]There are Catholic and Church of Scotland chaplaincies. In town [ITAL]there are enough churches of different denominations to wear out the knees of any good pair of jeans[EITAL], including, notably, Glasgow Cathedral (Church of Scotland) and St Andrew's Cathedral (Catholic). There are other places of worship locally for Muslims, Jews, Buddhists, Hindus and Sikhs.[HDNG]PAID WORK:[EHDNG][PARA][ITAL]Nothing special. In fact, Glasgow has been heaving itself out of the doldrums for more than a decade now and is still heaving. So, you can just join the back of the dole queue, pal.[EITAL] Some students work for the Post Office in the run up to Xmas.[PARA][PARA]
