Transcription: This is a reconstructed view of a motte and bailey castle. The bailey was a raised broad courtyard surrounded by a ditch or moat. Defensive walls and palisades were built from wood. The entrance was through a gateway. Inside the bailey were living quarters, a hall, a chapel, stables, barns and outbuildings. At the edge of the bailey was the motte, sometimes separated by a ditch or moat. it was a high, carefully constructed mound crowned by a simple wooden tower. It was used as a place of retreat if attacked, but also served as a lookout post and symbol of power.
