Transcription: Imagine Earth without an atmosphere. The sun's rays would warm its surface and the heat would radiate back into space. However, there is an atmosphere which lets most of the sun's rays through but traps some heat, warming up the Earth. When power stations and vehicles burn fuel, they put more carbon dioxide gas into the atmosphere than the Earth's plants can soak up. This gas traps more heat so the Earth gets even warmer. Scientists call this the greenhouse effect because a greenhouse also traps heat in the sunshine.
