  35. 1.  About StepUp'98
  36. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

  38. StepUp'98 is a set of powerful utilities designed to extend the
  39. Windows user interface. Once installed, this program makes available
  40. a wide variety of additional commands that are available via the menus
  41. and Taskbar, enabling you to work quickly and easily. 
  42.  
  43. StepUp'98 was rated "five stars" (out of five) by ZDNet Software Library.
  44. StepUp'98 was also selected as a Pick of the Week at the WinUser forum on
  45. CompuServe. The previous version, StepUp'96, was featured in Windows
  46. Magazine, Superior Shareware section.

  48. Features of StepUp'98 include:

  50. o StepUp Menu, accessible from the context menu and/or taskbar,
  51.   containing a set of commands to process files or folders, open new
  52.   browsing windows, run files, access items on the Internet, etc.

  54. o Folder Navigator, accessible from the context menu and/or taskbar,
  55.   allowing you to quickly go to the folder you recently visited.
  56.  
  57. o Menu Designer, which you can use to add new commands to StepUp
  58.   Menu, modify its existing commands to make them better suit your
  59.   needs, move menu items between submenus, etc.

  61. o File Handler, offering you an alternative way to manage your files
  62.   and folders.  It makes you able, for example, rename a large group
  63.   of files by a mask in a single step; split a large file across
  64.   multiple diskettes; change the time stamp of a group of files, make 
  65.   a list of files to further print it out, etc.

  67. o Taskbar Icons, offering you quick access to the items on the
  68.   Desktop when it's covered by many windows; the Fast Exit commands;
  69.   quick control of the AutoRun CD-ROM feature, and more.

  71. o StepUp Control Panel, which you can use to control various
  72.   settings of StepUp'98 and Windows, such as the thickness of the
  73.   window borders, the boot options for Windows 95, history and
  74.   uninstaller lists, etc.

  77.   Also included an automatic Setup utility, allowing you to painlessly

  99. 2. System requirements
  100. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

  102. StepUp'98 is designed for the operating systems Windows 95, 98 and 
  103. Windows NT (version 4.0 or higher).  1 MB (one megabyte) of free space
  104. on your hard disk is required to install StepUp'98.  There are no
  105. special requirements or recommendations except the obvious one: the
  106. better processor and more RAM your computer has the better StepUp'98
  107. will perform.
  108.  
  109. NOTE: throughout StepUp'98 documentation, "Windows" is used to
  110.   refer to Windows 95/98 and Windows NT 4.0.  In those few instances
  111.   where the operation of StepUp'98 under these operating systems
  112.   differ, an explicit operating system name is used.
  113.  
  114. StepUp'98 CANNOT be installed and used under the following
  115. operating systems:
  116.  
  117. - Windows 3.1/3.11, even if Win32s is installed
  118. - Windows for Workgroups 3.11, even if Win32s is installed.
  119. - Windows NT all versions prior to 4.0.

  122. 2. Installing and uninstalling StepUp'98
  123. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

  125. StepUp'98 comes with a Setup utility, which allows you to both
  126. install and uninstall StepUp'98.
  127.  
  128. NOTE: it is NOT sufficient to simply copy StepUp'98 files onto
  129.    your hard disk to install it.  You MUST run Setup.exe to
  130.    configure your system and enable all components of StepUp'98.
  131.  
  132. To install StepUp'98:
  133. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  134. a) If you have obtained StepUp'98 as a compressed file, uncompress
  135.    the file into a temporary folder on a hard disk, or on a floppy
  136.    diskette.
  137.    
  138. b) Open the folder containing the uncompressed set of StepUp'98
  139.    files and double-click on "Setup" (or "Setup.exe").
  140.    
  141.    NOTE: if a previous version of StepUp'98 already exists on the
  142.    disk, Setup may prompt you to restart Windows before the new
  143.    version may be installed over the existing one.
  144.  
  145. c) The installation program will prompt you to enter your name and a
  146.    Registration Code. If you have purchased a license for continued use
  147.    of StepUp'98 and received your Registration Code, you may enter it
  148.    at that time, and the evaluation version of StepUp'98 will be
  149.    converted into the registered one. Otherwise, you may skip entering
  150.    the registration code and StepUp'98 will operate in the evaluation
  151.    mode.

  153.    NOTE: when entering the registration information, please make sure you
  154.    enter your name in exactly the same way as it is spelled on your
  155.    Registration Acknowledgment, otherwise the registration code will
  156.    not be accepted. If your name is not shown on the Registration 
  157.    Acknowledgment, you should spell your name in the same way as you
  158.    have spelled it when placing the order (that is, if you have ordered
  159.    with a credit card, enter your name as it appears on the card, etc.)
  160.  
  161. d) The Setup utility will also suggest you the folder in which to install
  162.    StepUp'98.  You may accept the suggestion or choose other location
  163.    for StepUp'98 files.  
  164.  
  165. e) Setup utility will copy the files into the specified folder.
  166.  
  167.    NOTE: Except for the files copied into the destination folder and,
  168.    optionally, for the shortcuts added to the Start Menu and/or to the
  169.    Desktop folder, Setup does not install or modify any other files on
  170.    your computer.
  171.    
  172. f) After the installation has been complete, you may delete files
  173.    from the temporary folder, from which you were installing StepUp'98.
  174.  
  175. NOTE: If you had a previous version of StepUp'98 already installed
  176.    on the computer, you may wish to review the updated menu file
  177.    (installed as "Copy of StepUp.mnu"), and include its updated
  178.    commands into the active menu file(s) you were using before.  The
  179.    easiest way to do this is by opening both the "old" and "new" menu
  180.    files with Menu Designer, and then using its Copy and Paste commands
  181.    to transfer the desired commands between the files.
  182.  
  183.    If you used System Policies provided by a previous version of
  184.    StepUp'98, you may also need to update the active template file
  185.    with the information contained in the updated StepUp.ADM file.

  187. To uninstall StepUp'98
  188. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  189.  
  190. NOTE: it is NOT sufficient to simply delete the files of StepUp'98
  191.    to completely uninstall it.  Please follow the procedure described
  192.    below to uninstall StepUp'98 and clean up your system
  193.    configuration:
  194.  
  195. a) Open Control Panel and then open the "Add/Remove programs" item.
  196.    
  197. b) In the list of products which can be uninstalled find the line
  198.    "StepUp'98" and double-click it.
  199.    
  200. c) After the uninstalling procedure is complete, you may need to go
  201.    to the folder where StepUp'98 files were installed and delete
  202.    the remaining files.  If you are running Windows NT, you may need
  203.    to logoff and then log back on before Windows permits you to
  204.    delete these files.

  208. 4. This is TRY BEFORE YOU BUY software
  209. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

  211. This is NOT freeware or public domain software.  This is software
  212. which you can "try before you buy".
  213.  
  214. You may install the program in your system and use it for an
  215. evaluation period of up to 14 days.  After that time, you are
  216. required to purchase a license for continued use of the software or
  217. else stop using it.  You may freely copy and distribute evaluation
  218. copies of StepUp'98 provided that all conditions specified in the
  219. distribution license are satisfied (please see the distribution 
  220. license in the VENDINFO.DIZ file.)

  222. What's the difference between Evaluation and Licensed versions?
  223.  
  224. There is NO functional difference between the evaluation and
  225. licensed versions of this software (except for the registration
  226. reminders, displayed by the evaluation version after the evaluation
  227. period has ended).  Actually, it's the same program: you may convert
  228. an evaluation copy into a registered copy by entering your name and
  229. a valid registration code.  Similarly, a registered copy of the
  230. program may be unregistered by deleting the registration code or
  231. by just copying the program to another computer.

  233. Evaluation copies of our products are 100% fully functional.  We
  234. make them this way so you can have a real look at them to decide
  235. whether or not they fit your needs.  Please understand that if you
  236. fail to register, and continue to use StepUp'98 beyond the
  237. evaluation period without paying for it, don't expect the program to
  238. maintain its original functionality: some features may become
  239. disabled.  If you need more time to decide whether you want to keep
  240. the program, we'll give you an opportunity to extend the evaluation
  241. period.  However, we cannot afford to let you use the program
  242. without compensation.  In addition, it is unfair to our customers
  243. who do register to use the program.  We appreciate your
  244. understanding of this policy.

  267. How to purchase a license for use of StepUp'98

  270. StepUp'98 is licensed on the 'per-user', not a 'per-computer'
  271. basis.  This means that you may purchase a single individual license
  272. and use StepUp'98 on more than one computer (for example, a
  273. desktop system and a notebook), provided that you are the only user
  274. of those computers and there is no possibility to use the Registered
  275. Copy of StepUp'98 by anybody else.
  276.  
  277. On the other hand, if more than one person uses a computer, every
  278. such user must purchase an individual license for continued use of
  279. the software, or a site license for the total number of users
  280. accessing the computer must be obtained.
