  23. Thank you for using Quick Restart 3.0. This document briefly outlines the
  24. necessities and important notes about Quick Restart 3.0. I urge you to
  25. read through the text so that you can become familiar with the program and
  26. its operation.

  29. What is Quick Restart 3.0?
  30. Quick Restart 3.0 is a small program that displays a button bar on your
  31. desktop, allowing you to Restart, Shut Down, Power Down and Logoff all with
  32. just one click. The idea is that now you
  33. won't have to click on:
  34. Start - Shut Down. - Restart the Computer? - Yes (4 clicks)
  35. when you only have to click once to accomplish the same task.

  37. Configuration options are included so that Quick Restart 3.0 can be tailored
  38. to your needs and can provide a better service.

  41. Changes from Quick Restart 1.0
  42. Changes from Quick Restart 1.0 include:
  43.  
  44. -Better memory management.
  45. -Less memory usage as a result.
  46. -INI file no longer resides in Windows directory.
  47. -Improved Interface.
  48. -Improved code providing more stability.
  49. -A Power Off feature has been added for computers that support automatic
  50.  power off.
  51. -The Quick Restart Button Bar can now be set to stay on top of other windows.

  54. Changes from Quick Restart 2.0
  55. Changes from Quick Restart 2.0 include:

  57. -Logoff bug fixed (Extra instance of program is not created).
  58. -Button Bar no longer obstructs window hot-spots when staying on top of 
  59.  other windows.
  60. -A new option has been added for removing the title bar.
  61. -Tool Tips have been added to the buttons.

  64. Changes from Quick Restart 2.4
  65. New improvements include:
  66.  
  67. -Tool Tips can be turned ON and OFF as an option.
  68. -A System Tray icon replaces the Task Bar button.
  69. -The blue Title Bar is 256 colours and not 24-bit True Colour as in 
  70.  version 2.4 (This caused display problems on computers set to anything 
  71.  less than 24-bit True Colour).

  74. Changes from Quick Restart 2.6
  75. A few annoying bugs were eliminated in this latest version:
  76.  
  77. -When Windows Restarts automatically due to a change in configuration or
  78.  a newly installed program, Quick Restart 2.6 would sometimes give an error
  79.  message stating that the System Tray Icon could not be removed. This has
  80.  been fixed.
  81. -Quick Restart is not compatible with WindowsNT or the Win32s environment.
  82.  Version 2.6 would crash or cause other errors on these platforms.
  83.  Quick Restart 3.0 now displays an error message and then exits when run
  84.  on WindowsNT or Win32s, instead of running and then crashing.
  85. -Memory usage has been improved and as a result even less memory is needed
  86.  to run Quick Restart.
  87. -Less CPU resources are needed when running due to a change in coding.

  90. Changes from Quick Restart 2.7
  91. Final alterations were made to Quick Restart which should result in
  92. perfect operation:

  94. -The Emergency Close feature has been removed, due to Windows not really
  95.  being designed for the use I intended for it, and replaced with a
  96.  Force Applications to Close feature used when performing a one of the
  97.  Shut Down or Restart tasks.
  98. -The Power Down feature was causing problems on some computers, this has now
  99.  been rectified.
  100. -The Button Bar has been slightly re-designed.
  101. -The Configuration Screen has been re-designed.
  102. -The Title Bar has been removed.
  103. -Confirmation Message boxes have been replaced with custom designed dialog
  104.  boxes.
  105. -Quick Restart now uses the System Registry instead of an INI file, thereby
  106.  eliminating disk access problems.
  107. -Memory management has been completely changed so that slightly less memory
  108.  is needed.

  111. System Requirements
  112. The following specifications are a recommended guideline for optimal
  113. performance:
  114.  
  115.     OS:        Windows 95 (OSR1 or OSR2) or Windows 98
  116.         Processor:      486 or higher
  117.     RAM:        1 Mb
  118.     HDD Space:    1 Mb
  119.         Display:        256 Color or higher.

  122. Win32s and Windows NT
  123. -Quick Restart 3.0 is not compatible with Win32s.
  124.  The Restart, Shut Down, Power Down and Logoff functions used in
  125.  Quick Restart 3.0 are not supported in the Win32s environment.
  126.  
  127. -Quick Restart 3.0 was not designed for or tested with Windows NT. 
  128.  Quick Restart 3.0 will not function under Windows NT.

  131. Things you should know
  132. Quick Restart 3.0 uses VERY little resources and practically no processor
  133. power while idle. It has been tested with other software running such as
  134. games, compilers, word processors and there has been no noticeable decline
  135. in performance or interference.

  137. Once Quick Restart 3.0 has started, its window cannot be moved. This feature
  138. has been omitted so that Quick Restart 3.0 visually integrates better with
  139. the desktop. The bar can, however be moved by adjusting the configuration.
  140.  
  141. I did not put in a feature for restarting Windows (do not get this confused
  142. with restarting the computer) because it is better to reboot the computer
  143. and clear the memory rather than merely restarting Windows. Programs which
  144. require you to restart Windows after a new configuration will (or should)
  145. have this feature in place.
  146.  
  147. There is no button for restarting in MS-DOS Mode due to the fact that 
  148. software designed specifically for this operating system is virtually extinct 
  149. and I am trying to promote a move to the Windows 95 operating environment.

  152. Using Quick Restart 3.0
  153. Using Quick Restart 3.0 is pretty straight forward. The Button Bar
  154. automatically starts up when Windows starts. The buttons are labeled
  155. as follows (in order from left to right):
  156.  
  157. Restart:         Reboots the computer.
  158. Shutdown:        Closes Windows and allows user to turn the computer off
  159.                  safely.
  160. Powerdown:       Closes Windows and automatically turns computer power off.
  161.                  (Hardware support required)
  162. Logoff:          Logs the current user off and allows another one to log on.
  163. Emergency Close: Forcefully closes ALL running programs but retains Explorer. 
  164.                  A new user Logon may be initiated.
  165.  
  166. Configurable Options include the following:
  167.  
  168. Ask for confirmation before performing task. This option will cause
  169. Quick Restart 3.0 to display a message box asking for your approval before
  170. attempting to perform any of the shutdown or restart tasks.
  171.  
  172. Force Applications to Close before performing a Task. This will close any
  173. applications, running on your system, without letting them save information.
  174. This means that those pesky Message Boxes, asking if you wish to save, will
  175. not be displayed. It is recommended that you do not use this feature unless
  176. you are careful, as this will result in the loss of data which you have not
  177. saved.

  179. Button Bar stays on top of other windows. Using this feature will not allow
  180. any other window to obscure the button bar.
  181.  
  182. Enable Tool Tips. Turning this option on will allow the buttons on the
  183. button bar to display tips when the cursor positions over them.
