  26. Shareware distribution gives users a chance to try software before 
  27. buying it. If you try a Shareware program and continue using it, you 
  28. are expected to register. Individual programs differ on details - some
  29. request registration while others require it, some specify a maximum 
  30. trial period. With registration, you get anything from the simple 
  31. right to continue using the software to an updated program with 
  32. printed manual.

  34. Copyright laws apply to both Shareware and commercial software, and 
  35. the copyright holder retains all rights, with a few specific 
  36. exceptions as stated below. Shareware authors are accomplished 
  37. programmers, just like commercial authors, and the programs are 
  38. of comparable quality. (In both cases, there are good programs and 
  39. bad ones!) The main difference is in the method of distribution. The 
  40. author specifically grants the right to copy and distribute the 
  41. software, either to all and sundry or to a specific group. For 
  42. example, some authors require written permission before a 
  43. commercial disk vendor may copy their Shareware.

  45. Shareware is a distribution method, not a type of software. You 
  46. should find software that suits your needs and pocketbook, whether 
  47. it's commercial or Shareware. The Shareware system makes fitting 
  48. your needs easier, because you can try before you buy. And because 
  49. the overhead is low, prices are low also. Shareware has the 
  50. ultimate money-back guarantee -- if you don't use the product, you 
  51. don't pay for it.

  58. 'CD/Spectrum Pro' is supplied as is. The author disclaims all 
  59. warranties, expressed or implied, including, without limitation, the 
  60. warranties of merchantability and of fitness for any purpose. The 
  61. author assumes no liability for damages, direct or consequential, 
  62. which may result from the use of 'CD/Spectrum Pro'. 'CD/Spectrum Pro' 
  63. is a "shareware program" and is provided at no charge to the user 
  64. for evaluation. Feel free to share it with your friends, but please 
  65. do not give it away altered or as part of another system. The 
  66. essence of "user-supported" software is to provide personal computer 
  67. users with quality software without high prices, and yet to provide 
  68. incentive for programmers to continue to develop new products. If you 
  69. find this program useful and find that you are using 'CD/Spectrum Pro' 
  70. and continue to use 'CD/Spectrum Pro' after a reasonable trial period, 
  71. you must make a registration payment of $20 to NorthStar Solutions. 
  72. The $20 registration fee will license one copy for use on any one 
  73. computer at any one time. You must treat this software just like a 
  74. book. An example is that this software may be used by any number of 
  75. people and may be freely moved from one computer location to another, 
  76. so long as there is no possibility of it being used at one location 
  77. while it's being used at another. Just as a book cannot be read by 
  78. two different persons at the same time.
