  5. By early Febuary the Russian Winter Offensive had spilled into the Ukraine. 
  6. German armies were falling back and desperately trying to set up a new 
  7. line of defense. Some armies however were caught in the malestrom, the 
  8. 1st Panzer Army was surrounded and cut off. But General Von. Manstein
  9. ordered an quick attempt to link up with the men trapped in the
  10. Korsun pocket. To spearhead the drive was the 509th Tiger Battalion. 
  11. Throughout the 20th, the German Tigers battled Soviet road blocks and
  12. counter attacks. It would take several more days of hard fighting before
  13. the 509th linked up with men of SS Viking Division.
