  11. I. INSTALLING THE MINI-OMNIPEDIA
  12. ---------------------------
  13. From the Program Manager, choose "Run" from the file menu. If
  14. your CD-ROM drive is letter D, type "D:\SETUP.EXE" and click 
  15. "OK". This will begin the Mini-Omnipedia installation routine. 
  16. Follow the onscreen instructions. We recommend that you 
  17. install all the options, for best performance.

  20. II. FILES
  21. --------
  22. The Omnipedia copies many files to your hard disk. These will
  23. be automatically copied to the appropriate directories during
  24. installation. If you are curious about what files are being
  25. installed where, refer to the file "FILEINFO.TXT" on the CD.

  28. III. BASIC INSTALLATION
  29. ----------------------
  30. The basic installation (required) copies several files into a
  31. new directory on your hard disk. (You choose the name and the
  32. location of that directory during Setup.) These files are...
  33.  
  34. - "ST_OMNI.EXE" (the application)
  35. -  A directory named "BL" (containing required utility files)
  36. - "COLOR.DLL", "FILEIO.DLL" (ancilliary functions)
  37. - "STARTREK.INI" (file which contains your CD-ROM drive letter)
  38.     (In the future, if you change your CD-ROM drive letter, you will
  39. have to edit this file.)
  40. - "README.TXT"   (this file)
  41. -  Quicktime for Windows (video technology from Apple Computer)
  42.  
  43. These will consume less than 2,000K on your hard disk. However,
  44. performance of the Mini-Omnipedia will suffer if you do not also choose
  45. "OPTIMAL INSTALLATION", described below.

  47. The readme file "FILEINFO.txt" at the top level of this CD-ROM gives
  48. a complete description of what files are installed where.

  50. IV. OPTIMAL INSTALLATION
  51. -----------------------
  52. We strongly suggest that in addition to the basic installation,
  53. you also choose the "Optimal Installation" option. This will 
  54. copy the primary file into your new directory. 
  55. Although it requires an additional 7mb of space on your hard disk, 
  56. the Mini-Omnipedia will perform better.
  57.  
  58. V.ADJUSTING YOUR SYSTEM
  59. ------------------------
  60. You may pre-set your monitor to any SVGA setting from
  61. 256 colors (8-bit) to Millions of Colors (24-bit), although the
  62. product is optimized for 8-bit or 16-bit color. The fixed image 
  63. size of Mini-Omnipedia is 640x480, although the photo and 
  64. video windows can be dragged anywhere.

  66. Running other applications, especially networking software, while 
  67. Mini-Omnipedia is running can cause poor performance. We highly 
  68. recommend quitting any other program (including TSR's), turning 
  69. off networking and wallpaper, and disabling any kind of custom 
  70. shell program, before running Mini-Omnipedia. Be advised that 
  71. inadequate DOS memory  is frequently the cause of poor 
  72. performance or missing graphics or sound.

  75. VI.RUNNING OMNIPEDIA
  76. ---------------------
  77. 1. Put the Mini-Omnipedia: Starfleet Academy Files CD-ROM into
  78. your CD-ROM drive.
  79. 2. Win 3.1: From the Program Manager, double-click the 
  80. "Mini-Omnipedia Star Fleet Academy Files" icon in the "Mini-Omnipedia" group.

  84.      "Programs", then... 
  85.      "Mini-Omnipedia", then... 
  86.      "Mini-Omnipedia: Star Fleet Academy Files".

  91. VII.TROUBLESHOOTING-

  97. If you have an Ensoniq Soundscape card and experience a 
  98. General Protection Fault running the Mini-Omnipedia, contact
  99. Ensoniq Technical Support at (610) 647-3195 for
  100. the latest drivers or contact Ensoniq BBS at (610) 647-3195

  105. COMPAQ COMPUTERS
  106. We have encountered a problem when using Mini-Omnipedia on
  107. Compaq machines while using Compaq Wallpaper (the background
  108. graphic with the Compaq logo repeating.) We suggest
  109. that the wallpaper be turned off or set to NONE.
