- I. INSTALLING THE MINI-OMNIPEDIA
- ---------------------------
- From the Program Manager, choose "Run" from the file menu. If
- your CD-ROM drive is letter D, type "D:\SETUP.EXE" and click
- "OK". This will begin the Mini-Omnipedia installation routine.
- Follow the onscreen instructions. We recommend that you
- install all the options, for best performance.
-
-
- II. FILES
- --------
- The Omnipedia copies many files to your hard disk. These will
- be automatically copied to the appropriate directories during
- installation. If you are curious about what files are being
- installed where, refer to the file "FILEINFO.TXT" on the CD.
-
-
- III. BASIC INSTALLATION
- ----------------------
- The basic installation (required) copies several files into a
- new directory on your hard disk. (You choose the name and the
- location of that directory during Setup.) These files are...
-
- - "ST_OMNI.EXE" (the application)
- - A directory named "BL" (containing required utility files)
- - "COLOR.DLL", "FILEIO.DLL" (ancilliary functions)
- - "STARTREK.INI" (file which contains your CD-ROM drive letter)
- (In the future, if you change your CD-ROM drive letter, you will
- have to edit this file.)
- - "README.TXT" (this file)
- - Quicktime for Windows (video technology from Apple Computer)
-
- These will consume less than 2,000K on your hard disk. However,
- performance of the Mini-Omnipedia will suffer if you do not also choose
- "OPTIMAL INSTALLATION", described below.
-
- The readme file "FILEINFO.txt" at the top level of this CD-ROM gives
- a complete description of what files are installed where.
-
- IV. OPTIMAL INSTALLATION
- -----------------------
- We strongly suggest that in addition to the basic installation,
- you also choose the "Optimal Installation" option. This will
- copy the primary file into your new directory.
- Although it requires an additional 7mb of space on your hard disk,
- the Mini-Omnipedia will perform better.
-
- V.ADJUSTING YOUR SYSTEM
- ------------------------
- You may pre-set your monitor to any SVGA setting from
- 256 colors (8-bit) to Millions of Colors (24-bit), although the
- product is optimized for 8-bit or 16-bit color. The fixed image
- size of Mini-Omnipedia is 640x480, although the photo and
- video windows can be dragged anywhere.
-
- Running other applications, especially networking software, while
- Mini-Omnipedia is running can cause poor performance. We highly
- recommend quitting any other program (including TSR's), turning
- off networking and wallpaper, and disabling any kind of custom
- shell program, before running Mini-Omnipedia. Be advised that
- inadequate DOS memory is frequently the cause of poor
- performance or missing graphics or sound.
-
-
- VI.RUNNING OMNIPEDIA
- ---------------------
- 1. Put the Mini-Omnipedia: Starfleet Academy Files CD-ROM into
- your CD-ROM drive.
- 2. Win 3.1: From the Program Manager, double-click the
- "Mini-Omnipedia Star Fleet Academy Files" icon in the "Mini-Omnipedia" group.
-
- Win95:
- Choose "Start", then...
- "Programs", then...
- "Mini-Omnipedia", then...
- "Mini-Omnipedia: Star Fleet Academy Files".
-
- 3. There must be an Omnipedia CD in your CD-ROM drive for the program to run.
-
-
- VII.TROUBLESHOOTING-
- WEIRD COMPAQ PROBLEM,
- ENSONIQ SOUND CARDS
- --------------------------------------------------------------
-
- ENSONIQ CARDS
- If you have an Ensoniq Soundscape card and experience a
- General Protection Fault running the Mini-Omnipedia, contact
- Ensoniq Technical Support at (610) 647-3195 for
- the latest drivers or contact Ensoniq BBS at (610) 647-3195
- to download the latest drivers.

-
- COMPAQ COMPUTERS
- We have encountered a problem when using Mini-Omnipedia on
- Compaq machines while using Compaq Wallpaper (the background
- graphic with the Compaq logo repeating.) We suggest
- that the wallpaper be turned off or set to NONE.
- [Refer to your Windows guide for Desktop Options
- or Control Panel (Wallpaper)]
