1:[3,#B],6:[1,#B]@1Alpha Cygnus IX @2 Federation Ambassador Sarek was credited for a treaty with this planet, one of the many triumphs of his distinguished career. (“Sarek” [TNG]).
~1:[4,#B],16:[2,#B]@1Alpha III, Statutes of @2 Landmark document in the protection of individual civil liberties, cited by Samuel Cogley when James Kirk was accused of murder in 2267 but denied the opportunity to face his accuser. (“Court Martial” [TOS]).
~1:[3,#B]@1Alpha Majoris I @2 Planet origin of the Mellitus, a creature that is gaseous when moving and becomes solid when it ceases movement. (“Wolf in the Fold” [TOS]).
~1:[2,#B],9:[2,#B],51:[2,#B],69:[1,#B]@1Alpha Moon @2 One of two satellites orbiting planet Peliar Zel. The inhabitants of Alpha Moon devised an ingenious system to generate power by tapping into the magnetic field of Peliar Zel. While this was of great benefit to the people on Alpha Moon, it had detrimental environmental effects on nearby Beta Moon, also orbiting Peliar Zel. The two moons, historically at odds, sought the mediation services of Ambassador Odan to resolve the conflict in 2367. (“The Host” [TNG]).
~1:[3,#B],9:[1,#I],40:[1,#B]@1Alpha Omicron System @2 An uncharted system that the Enterprise -D passed en route to a mission in the Guernica System in 2367. A previously unknown life-form was discovered in the Alpha Omicron system, living in an asteroid belt. SEE: Junior (Galaxy's Child” [TNG]).
~1: [3, #b], 40: [1, #b], 49: [1, #b]@1Alpha Onias III @2 An uninhabited class-M planet, listed by Federation survey teams as barren and inhospitable. Subspace fluctuations detected in the system in 2367 suggested a possible Romulan base. While on Alpha Onias III to investigate this possibility, Commander Riker experienced an elaborate holodeck-type virtual reality devised by Barash. (“Future Imperfect” [TNG]).
~1:[3,#B]@1Alpha Proxima II @2 Planet where several women were knifed to death. The murders were reminiscent of those committed by Jack the Ripper. (“Wolf in the Fold” [TOS]).
~1:[2,#B],18:[4,#B],23:[1,#B],46:[3,#B],65:[2,#B],67:[17,#I],87:[2,#I],90:[7,#I]@1Alpha Quadrant @2 One quarter of the entire Milky Way galaxy. The region in which most of the United Federation of Planets, including Earth, is located. The galaxy is so huge that the majority of the Alpha Quadrant remains unexplored, even in the 24th century. Station Deep Space 9 is located in Alpha Quadrant. (“Captive Pursuit” [DS9]). The Klingon and Romulan empires are located in Beta Quadrant. The reason for splitting the Federation between Alpha and Beta Quadrants was to rationalize Kirk's line in Star Trek II that the Enterprise was the only starship in the quadrant.
~1:[3,#B],8:[2,#B]@1Alpha V, Colony @2 A human settlement where Charles Evans' nearest living relatives lived. (“Charlie X” [TOS]).
~1:[2,#B],4:[1,#B],8:[1,#B],14:[1,#B],41:[2,#B],52:[2,#B],61:[3,#B],70:[1,#B]@1alpha-currant nectar @2 Priceless Wadi beverage offered by Falow as a wager in a Dabo game at Deep Space 9 in 2369. Quark declined the bid after taking a drink of the nectar and finding it distasteful. (“Move Along Home” [DS9]).

Riker felt the mission was too dangerous to expose the ship's captain to risk. The incident took place prior to Riker's assignment to the Enterprise -D. The star Altair, also known as Alpha Aquila, is the brightest star in the constellation Aquila the Eagle, visible from Earth. (“Encounter at Farpoint, Part I” [TNG]).
~1:[2,#B],14:[2,#I],45:[1,#B],50:[2,#BI],63:[2,#BI],76:[7,#I]@1Altair VI @2 Planet whose people ended a long interplanetary conflict in 2267. The Starship Enterprise was scheduled to attend the inauguration of their new president shortly after the end of that war, but the visit was postponed when Spock diverted the ship to planet Vulcan because he was undergoing Pon farr (“Amok Time” [TOS]). Altair VI was mentioned in Starfleet Academy's notorious Kobayashi Maru training simulation. The incident involved a damaged ship near that planet. (Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan).
~1:[2,#B],21:[2,#B],23:[7,#I]@1Altair water @2 Beverage that Dr. McCoy ordered at a bar on Earth just before trying to book passage to the Genesis Planet. (Star Trek III: The Search for Spock).
~1:[2,#B],8:[2,#B]@1Altairian Conference @2 Meeting at which Picard met Captain Rixx prior to 2364. (“Conspiracy” [TNG]).
~1:[2,#B],58:[1,#B],60:[3,#B]@1Altarian encephalitis @2 A retrovirus that incorporated its DNA directly into the cells of its host. The virus could lie dormant for years, but activate without warning. Victims would be pyrexic and comatose and would suffer from widespread synaptic degradation. Long-term memory, usually from the moment of the infection, would be destroyed. In a virtual reality created by Barash on Alpha Onias III, Commander Riker was told he had contracted Altarian encephalitis in 2367, thus explaining a significant memory loss. (“Future Imperfect” [TNG]).
~1:[1,#B],6:[1,#B],10:[3,#B],43:[1,#B],50:[1,#B]@1Altec @2 Class-M planet; along with Straleb, part of the Coalition of Madena. Although Altec was technically at peace with Straleb, relations between the two planets had been strained to the point that an interplanetary incident was created when it was revealed that Benzan of Straleb had been engaged to Yanar of Altec in 2365. (“The Outrageous Okona” [TNG]).
~1:[2,#B],7:[1,#I],18:[2,#B]@1Altine Conference @2 Scientific conference attended by Enterprise -D Chief Medical Officer Beverly Crusher in 2369. She met Dr. Reyga while at the conference. (“Suspicions” [TNG]).
~1:[3,#B]@1Altonian brain teaser @2 A holographic puzzle that responds to neural theta waves, the goal being to turn a floating multicolor sphere into a solid color. The Dax symbiont had been attempting to master the game for 140 years and had yet to succeed. (“A Man Alone” [DS9]).

Beverly Crusher wanted to try this program at Quark's Place when the Enterprise -D visited Deep Space 9. (“Birthright, Part I” [TNG]).
~1:[1,#B],16:[1,#I],40:[1,#BI],58:[24,#I],85:[7,#I],94:[19,#I]@1Amanda @2(Jane Wyatt) Ambassador Sarek's human wife and mother to Spock. Amanda came aboard the Enterprise in 2267 with her husband, Sarek, who was attending the Babel Conference (“Journey to Babel” [TOS]). Amanda helped Spock reeducate himself following his fal-tor-pan refusion in 2285. She tried especially to help her son rediscover the human portion of his personality (Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home). Amanda's first appearance was in “Journey To Babel” (TOS). A younger Amanda was played by Cynthia Blaise in Star Trek V for Spock's birth flashbacks. According to original Star Trek series story editor Dorothy Fontana, Amanda's maiden name was Grayson, although this was not established in a regular episode.
~1:[2,#BI],6:[1,#I],12:[1,#B],15:[25,#I],42:[27,#I],70:[22,#I]@1Amar, I.K.C. @2 Klingon battle cruiser, K't'inga class, destroyed while investigating the V'Ger machine life-form. (Star Trek: The Motion Picture). The new Klingon battle cruiser was closely based on the original battle cruiser designed by Matt Jefferies for the original Star Trek television series. This new version, built at Magicam and at Future General, incorporated much more elaborate surface detailing for a more realistic look. The commander of the Amar was played by Mark Lenard, who also played Spock's father, Sarek, and had been the Romulan commander in “Balance of Terror” (TOS).
~1:[2,#B],10:[1,#I]@1Amargosa Diaspora @2 Dense globular star cluster investigated by the Enterprise -D in 2369. (“Schisms” [TNG]).

Excalibur (NCC-26517), the U.S.S. Zhukov (NCC-26136), and the aforementioned U.S.S. Enterprise -C (NCC-1701C). The Ambassador -class ship was designed by Rick Sternbach and Andrew Probert. The model, built by Greg Jein, was intended to suggest an intermediate step between the Excelsior -class and the Galaxy -class starships.
~1:[2,#B],53:[2,#B],68:[6,#I],100:[2,#B],104:[6,#I]@1ambassador, Klingon @2(John Schuck) Representative of the Klingon government who attempted to secure the extradition of James Kirk in 2286 so that he could be brought to trial for alleged crimes including the theft of a Klingon spacecraft. The Klingon ambassador also believed, mistakenly, that Kirk had participated in the development of Project Genesis with the intent of using it as a weapon against the Klingon people. (Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home). The Klingon ambassador vehemently opposed efforts to free James Kirk and Leonard McCoy from Klingon custody after the two had been arrested on charges of murdering Chancellor Gorkon in 2293. (Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country).
~1:[1,#B],10:[3,#B],15:[2,#BI],64:[2,#I]@1amoeba @2 A massive spaceborne single-celled organism that consumed the Gamma 7A System and the U.S.S. Intrepid in 2268. This creature strongly resembled microscopic protozoans found on terrestrial planets, save for its enormous size. The spaceborne amoeba was some 18,000 kilometers long, and about 3,000 kilometers wide, surrounded by a large energy-absorbing field. The creature was believed to originate from outside our galaxy. The Starship Enterprise approached the organism shortly after stardate 4307 and was nearly crippled by the amoeba's energy-absorbing field, termed a “zone of darkness.” The organism was destroyed by an antimatter bomb planted into the amoeba's nucleus with assistance from a shuttlecraft piloted by Spock. (“The Immunity Syndrome” [TOS]).

This world has sophisticated subterranean equipment that can read the minds of visitors, then almost immediately create whatever it is that the visitor imagined. Members of the Enterprise landing party encountered a variety of images, from old lovers and school rivals, to storybook characters. Although the images were fascinating, they were disturbing and even frightening until the landing party members understood what was happening. SEE: Alice; black knight; Caretaker; Finnegan; Police Special; Ruth; tiger; White rabbit. (“Shore Leave” [TOS]). The actual name for the planet was not given in the episode. The location filming for “Shore Leave” took place near Los Angeles at Vasquez Rocks and Africa USA. Vasquez Rocks was featured in several Original Series episodes, as well as in episodes of Star Trek: The Next Generation. SEE: Cestus III. (“Arena” [TOS]).
~1:[2,#B],12:[2,#B],29:[1,#B],32:[2,#I],51:[1,#I],80:[1,#I]@1Anan 7 @2(David Opatoshu) Leader of the High Council of planet Eminiar VII in 2267. Anan 7 was his planet's military commander in the war between Eminiar and Vendikar. When the Starship Enterprise arrived at Eminiar VII in 2267, Anan tried to warn the ship to stay away. After the Enterprise ignored the warning, it was Anan's difficult task to enforce the declaration that the ship was a war casualty under the agreement between his government and Vendikar. When Enterprise captain Kirk further abrogated the agreement, Anan agreed to peace talks with the Vendikar government to avoid the possibility of real war. (“A Taste of Armageddon” [TOS]).

~1:[1,#B],76:[2,#B],86:[2,#B]@1anbo-jytsu @2 Considered by some to be the ultimate evolution in the martial arts, anbo-jytsu is derived from a number of Asian forms. The sport involves two opponents striking each other with three-meter-long staffs while blindfolded. A proximity detector at one end of each staff provides guidance on the opponent's location, while full body armor protects each player. Points are scored for contact with the opponent, and for knocking the opponent outside of the playing ring. Kyle Riker played this highly competitive game with his son, William Riker, from the time William was eight years old. Although the elder Riker never lost to his son, William later learned that Kyle had been cheating since William had been 12 years old. (“The Icarus Factor” [TNG]).
~1:[2,#B],26:[2,#B]@1Anchilles fever @2 Deadly disease capable of spreading rapidly in a planetary population and causing widespread and painful deaths in the millions. The disease struck planet Styris IV in 2364. (“Code of Honor” [TNG]).

Set in Earth's 19th century in the town of Deadwood, South Dakota, the program allowed participants to play the town sheriff, the sheriff's deputy, and Durango, the mysterious stranger. The holoprogram malfunctioned and the fantasy became a deadly reality. During the malfunction, information from Data's neural net became incorporated into the holodeck program. SEE: Subroutine C-47; progressive memory purge; Spot. (“A Fistful of Datas” [TNG]). Deadwood was an actual town in South Dakota. The Western sequences were filmed on the back lot of Universal Studios in Los Angeles.
~1:[2,#B],10:[2,#B],25:[1,#B],27:[2,#B],42:[1,#B]@1Andevian II @2 Planet whose fourth moon was held by Lwaxana Troi to be an ideal site for a romantic picnic. Ambassador Troi reserved a holosuite at Quark's bar on Deep Space 9 so that she could have such a picnic with Odo, although she neglected to ask Odo first. (“The Forsaken” [DS9]).
~1:[2,#B],13:[1,#B],28:[1,#B]@1Andolian brandy @2 Quark offered a bottle of this special liqueur to the Wadi delegation at Deep Space 9 in 2369 after he was caught cheating at the Dabo wheel. (“Move Along Home” [DS9]).
~1:[2,#B],7:[2,#B],17:[2,#B]@1Andonian tea @2 A refreshment offered by Admiral Aaron to Captain Picard when the latter was visiting Starfleet Headquarters in 2364. (“Conspiracy” [TNG]).
~1:[2,#B],8:[1,#B],13:[16,#I]@1Andorian blues @2 Musical form, popular with keyboardist Amarie. (“Unification, Part II” [TNG]). The term was, of course, a gag based on the fact that Andorians have blue skin.

Members of the United Federation of Planets, an Andorian delegation journeyed to the Babel Conference of 2267 aboard the Starship Enterprise. The Andorian contingent included Ambassador Shras and staff member Thelev. SEE: Orions. (“Journey to Babel” [TOS]). Andorian marriages generally require groups of four people. (“Data's Day” [TNG]). Andorians were also seen in “Whom Gods Destroy” (TOS), in the Federation Council chambers in Star Trek IV, and in “Captain's Holiday” (TNG), and “The Offspring” (TNG). Renegade Andorians were mentioned in “The Survivors” (TNG).
~1:[1,#B],10:[2,#B],30:[2,#B]@1Andrea @2(Sherry Jackson) Beautiful female android creation of archaeologist Roger Korby. Andrea was built using technology left over from the ancient race that lived under the surface of planet Exo III. (“What Are Little Girls Made Of?” [TOS]).

The Old Ones of planet Exo III developed highly sophisticated androids, but those androids eventually destroyed their civilization (“What Are Little Girls Made Of?” [TOS]). The androids created by the Makers from the Andromeda Galaxy were programmed to perform the menial tasks of their society (“I Mudd” [TOS]). Androids were also created on planet Exo III in 2266 by Dr. Roger Korby, from designs left behind by the Old Ones. (“What Are Little Girls Made Of?” [TOS]). SEE: Andrea; Brown, Dr.; Ruk. Androids were created by Sargon, Thalassa, and Henoch aboard the Enterprise so that their minds could be transferred into robot bodies. (“Return to Tomorrow” [TOS]). Flint attempted to create an immortal mate named Reena Kapec but was unable to achieve his goal. (“Requiem for Methuselah” [TOS]). The android Data, who served aboard the Enterprise -D, strove to become more like his human shipmates (“Encounter at Farpoint” [TNG]). A legal decision handed down by Starfleet Judge Advocate General Phillipa Louvois in 2365 established that the android Data was indeed a sentient being, entitled to full constitutional protection as a citizen of the United Federation of Planets (“The Measure of a Man” [TNG]). A significant advance in android technology was made in 2366 when Data used a new submicron matrix transfer technology to build an android daughter, whom he named Lal (“The Offspring” [TNG]). ~1: [3, #b], 19: [2, #b], 31: [1, #i]@1Angel Falls, Venezuela @2 Located in southeastern Venezuela on Earth, Angel Falls is the highest waterfall on that planet. William Riker and Deanna Troi considered taking shore leave there while the Enterprise -D was in drydock around Earth in 2367. (“Family” [TNG]).
~1:[2,#B],44:[1,#BI],63:[2,#B]@1Angel One @2 Class-M planet supporting carbon-based life-forms including an intelligent humanoid population. Ruled by a constitutionally run elected matriarchy, the planet's society treated males as second-class citizens, although this may be expected to change over time since four survivors from the Federation freighter Odin took up residence there in 2364. Angel One is located fairly close to the Romulan Neutral Zone. SEE: Beata; Ramsey. (“Angel One” [TNG]).
~1:[2,#B],13:[1,#B],32:[2,#B]@1Angosia III @2 Class-M planet that applied for Federation membership in 2366. The Angosian government was, at the time, experiencing civil unrest due to difficulties in repatriating their veterans from the recent Tarsian War. (“The Hunted” [TNG]).
~1:[3,#B],11:[1,#B],40:[2,#B],50:[2,#B],55:[17,#I]@1Angosian transport vessel @2 A small sublight vessel used by the Angosians to ferry people within their system. It did not have warp capability or a cloaking device and it carried minimal weaponry. One of these vessels was hijacked by Roga Danar, a prisoner escaping from the Angosian penal moon Lunar V. (“The Hunted” [TNG]). The Angosian transport vessel model was a modification of the Straleb ship from “The Outrageous Okona” [TNG]).
~1:[1,#B],8:[2,#B],37:[2,#B],85:[2,#B],130:[2,#B],135:[17,#I],155:[3,#I]@1Angosians @2 The humanoid residents of the planet Angosia III. Nonviolent by nature, the Angosians had dedicated their society to the development of the mind and the cultivation of the intellect. However, in order to fight their Tarsian War in the mid-24th century, the government chemically altered their military, converting them into “supersoldiers” who were able to survive at any cost. Unfortunately, when the war ended, the “improvements” made on the soldiers were found to be irreversible. These veterans were imprisoned on a penal moon, Lunar V, because they were deemed too dangerous to return to Angosian society. The Angosian government applied for Federation membership in 2366, but the application was suspended by Jean-Luc Picard, pending resolution of civil unrest resulting from the Angosians' inability to repatriate the veterans. SEE: Danar, Roga. (“The Hunted” [TNG]). The shirts worn by the members of the Angosian council were the turtlenecked men's shirts from the Star Trek II Starfleet officers' uniforms.
~1:[2,#B],20:[1,#I],28:[1,#B],31:[2,#B]@1anionic energy @2 Form of energy composed of quantum-level particles. Anionic energy was detected in the synaptic patterns of the Enterprise -D crew whose minds were controlled by Ux-Mal criminals from Mab-Bu VI in 2368. (“Power Play” [TNG]).
~1:[2,#B],5:[1,#B],12:[2,#B]@1Annabelle series @2 Type of android designed by Mudd the First, aka Harry Mudd, in 2267. (“I, Mudd” [TOS]).
~1: [3, #b], 81: [1, #b], 89: [2, #b], 93: [2, #b]@1annular confinement beam @2 Abbreviated as ACB. A cylindrical forcefield used to insure that a person being transported remains within the beam. (“Power Play” [TNG]). Failure to remain within the confinement field can cause a dangerous release of beam energy, possibly fatally injuring the transport subject and those nearby. Roga Danar, during transport from a security holding area to an Angosian police ship, deliberately disrupted the ACB, causing a blast of energy that permitted him to escape. (“The Hunted” [TNG]). When Picard was trapped on the surface of planet El-Adrel IV in 2368, La Forge attempted to boost the ACB in an effort to penetrate the particle scattering field that surrounded the planet. (“Darmok” [TNG]).
~1: [1, #b], 69: [2, #b], 78: [1, #i], 81: [2, #b]@1Ansata @2 Radical political group, also called the Ansata Separatist Movement, on the western continent of planet Rutia IV. The Ansata had demanded autonomy and self- determination for over a generation, but received no recognition from the Rutian government. The Ansata movement began in 2296, when the government denied an early bid for independence, and some of the Ansata turned to terrorist action. In 2366, the Ansata, led by Kyril Finn, engineered an incident in which they abducted Enterprise -D officers Jean-Luc Picard and Beverly Crusher in a successful bid to gain recognition by involving Federation interests in their struggle. (“The High Ground” [TNG]).

The Corvallen freighter that had been contracted to smuggle Romulan vice-proconsul M'ret to Federation space in 2369 was an Antares -class vessel. (“Face of the Enemy” [TNG]). An Antares -class sublight ship was used to mislead Cardassian forces into attacking what they believed was a group of Bajoran terrorists traveling from Valo I to Valo III in 2368. The ship was empty, but its destruction provided evidence that Admiral Kennelly had been collaborating with the Cardassians. SEE: Orta, Valo system. (“Ensign Ro” [TNG]). The Corvallen freighter seen in “Face of the Enemy” (TNG) was identified as an Antares -class ship. Since that ship was a reuse of the Battris from “Heart of Glory” (TNG), we speculate that other uses of that model were also Antares -class ships. We further wonder if this might be what the ship in “Charlie X” (TOS) looked like.

Commanded by Captain Ramart, the ship was destroyed when Evans caused a baffle plate on their energy pile to vanish. (“Charlie X” [TOS]). Named for the brightest star (as seen from Earth) in the constellation Scorpius (the Scorpion). Although the Antares was not seen in “Charlie X,” writer/consultant Naren Shankar suggested that the Bajoran cargo vessels in “Ensign Ro” (TNG) be designated as Antares -class ships, a tip of the hat to “Charlie X.”
