The Enterprise -D was en route to a scientific mission there in 2364 when Captain Walker Keel requested a covert meeting with Captain Picard to discuss Keel's suspicions of a conspiracy to infiltrate Starfleet. (“Conspiracy” [TNG]). An interstellar conference was held there in 2365. Among the participants was Betazoid ambassador Lwaxana Troi. Troi was instrumental in uncovering an Antidean plot to blow up the conference when she discovered that the delegates from planet Antide III were in fact assassins. (“Manhunt” [TNG]).
~1:[1,#B],19:[3,#I],27:[47,#I],75:[21,#I]@1padd@2Acronym for personal access display device. Small handheld information unit used by Starfleet personnel aboard Federation starships. At the time Star Trek: The Next Generation's padd was designed in 1987, it seemed fairly futuristic, but as this entry is written, devices like Apple Computer's Newton personal digital assistant, that do virtually everything a padd can theoretically do, are already being marketed as consumer products. An electronic clipboard was also used by the Enterprise crew in the original series, which might also have been a padd device, although it was never referred to as such.

Starfleet officer William Riker briefly served as first officer aboard this ship in 2365 as part of an officer exchange program. During Riker's service aboard the Pagh, an incident with Starfleet was narrowly averted when Enterprise -D personnel helped identify and repair damage from a previously undiscovered subatomic life form that was damaging the hull of the Pagh. (“A Matter of Honor” [TNG]).

The use of the painstik is significant because enduring physical suffering is considered a Klingon spiritual test. O'Brien recalled that he saw a painstik used on a two-ton Rectyne monopod, and that the creature jumped five meters before dying of excessive cephalic pressures. (“The Icarus Factor” [TNG]). Painstiks were also used in the Sonchi ceremony. (“Reunion” [TNG]).

Geordi La Forge taught Data how to paint, causing Riker to comment on the irony of a blind man teaching an android about a visual art. Although Data's initial efforts at painting were relatively mechanistic because he was concentrating on the techniques of painting, he eventually gained an awareness of the artistry involved as he became more comfortable with his own humanity. (“11001001” [TNG]). A painting class was offered aboard the Enterprise -D in 2366. Captain Picard was one of the students, although his initial efforts may have been discouraged by Data's unintentionally harsh criticism. (“A Matter of Perspective” [TNG]). The paintings by Picard and the other students in the class were done by Elaine Sokoloff. When Data began to experience dreams in 2369, he used painting as a means to explore those inner visions. Data painted a multitude of images, including his creator, Dr. Soong, as well as himself as a bird. (“Birthright, Part I” [TNG]). Data's paintings were actually done by scenic artists Jim Magdaleno, Alan Kobayashi, and Mike Okuda. Additional designs were contributed by Wendy Drapanas and Rick Sternbach.
~1:[2,#B],9:[1,#B],11:[1,#BI],35:[33,#I]@1Pakled captain@2(Christopher Collins). Commanding officer of the Pakled ship Mondor. Although this individual gave the impression of possessing limited intelligence, he was later found to be both intelligent and devious. (“Samaritan Snare” [TNG]). The captain was given the name Grebnedlog in the script, but this name was never spoken in the actual completed episode. Christopher Collins also played Captain Kargan in “A Matter of Honor” (TNG).

Enterprise archaeology and anthropology officer on a landing party to planet Pollux IV that encountered the entity Apollo in 2267. The humanoid Apollo found Palamas attractive, and Palamas found Apollo fascinating on both a professional and personal level. Realizing that Apollo intended to enslave the Enterprise crew, Palamas spurned his advances. Apollo eventually released the ship and vanished into oblivion. (“Who Mourns for Adonais?” [TOS]). An early draft script for the episode would have ended with a scene in which McCoy discovers that Palamas was pregnant with Apollo's child.
~1:[2,#B],18:[2,#B]@1Palmer, Dr.@2(Tim Trella). Federation scientist injured in the failure of the “duck blind” enclosure on planet Mintaka III. Par Lenor and his assistant, Qol, deliberately sabotaged their shuttle in order to be “rescued” by the Enterprise -D on stardate 45761. Once aboard the starship, Lenor hoped to negotiate an exclusive trade agreement with Kriosian ambassador Briam, who was also aboard the Enterprise -D. Lenor discovered that Briam was accompanying an empathic metamorph named Kamala, and tried to bribe Briam into selling her. When Briam refused, a struggle ensued, and Briam was injured. (“The Perfect Mate” [TNG]). Max Grodenchik also played Rom in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.

Lwaxana Troi introduced young Alexander Rozhenko to a holodeck simulation of the Parallax Colony in 2368. Alexander seemed to enjoy the “Laughing Hour,” while Lwaxana wanted to visit the colony's famous mudbaths. Alexander tolerated the mudbaths, but Worf could not fathom their attraction. Patahk was severly injured in the crash, and was brought on board the Enterprise -D for medical treatment. Patahk died for lack of a compatible ribosome infusion. Although suitable ribosomes were available from Worf, the Klingon declined to make a donation to what he viewed as an enemy of his people, and Patahk himself insisted he would not accept such a donation from Worf. Romulan officials maintained that the intrusion of Patahk's ship into Federation space was accidental. (“The Enemy” [TNG]). The Paxans protected their planet by means of an energy field that appeared to be an unstable wormhole. Passage through the field put unsuspecting starship crews into a state of biochemical stasis, so such ships could be towed out of Paxan space without the crew's knowledge. The Enterprise -D encountered the Paxans in 2367, but all records of and memories of the contact were erased, so no Enterprise -D personnel (except Data) retained any memory of the incident. ~1:[2,#B],50:[1,#I],73:[2,#B],129:[1,#I]@1Penthara IV@2Class-M Federation planet with a population of 20 million humans. In 2368, Penthara IV was struck by a type-C asteroid. The explosion created a dust cloud that reflected most of the sunlight that would have reached the surface, causing surface temperatures to drop at an alarming rate. Enterprise -D attempted to alleviate the problem by using ship's phasers to release subterranean carbon dioxide gas, in the hopes that the resulting greenhouse effect would help warm the planet. Unfortunately, the release of gas was accompanied by unanticipated volcanic activity, releasing massive amounts of volcanic ash, compounding the initial problem. A desperate attempt was successful in saving the planet's ecosphere when the airborne particulates were vaporized and the resulting plasma energy was drawn out into space by the Enterprise -D's navigational deflector. A human woman, fiercely devoted to her husband, Perrin sought to protect Sarek from the knowledge that he suffered from Bendii Syndrome, a disease that strips away emotional control. Perrin persuaded Captain Jean-Luc Picard to enter into a mind-meld with Sarek, permitting Picard's emotional strength to support the ambassador long enough for him to conclude the historic Legaran talks in 2366, the final triumph of Sarek's career. (“Sarek” [TNG]). Perrin continued to care for her husband during Sarek's final months, as he suffered from the degenerative effects of Bendii Syndrome. Perrin harbored resentment toward Spock, who publicly opposed Sarek's position during the Cardassian wars, and who left for Romulus during Sarek's illness without saying goodbye. For many years Troyius and the planet Elas had been at war and this union was a hope toward peace. Unfortunately, the Dohlman resented having a new culture thrust upon her, and she stabbed Petri.
