During the original Star Trek series, it was assumed that the arrowhead symbol was unique to the Enterprise, and that other starships had different insignia for their uniforms. We therefore assume that at some point after the original Star Trek series, the Enterprise emblem was adopted for the entire Starfleet. During the 2360s, the Klingons experimented with the technology, but after several accidents, they abandoned their research. In 2368, the Romulans developed a similar device that caused catastrophic damage to the warp core of the Romulan test vehicle. The Enterprise -D responded to a distress call from the Romulan ship and suffered chroniton particle contamination as a result of the failure of the interphase generator. During the mission, Geordi La Forge and Ro Laren were lost in an apparent transporter malfunction. It was later discovered that the La Forge, Ro, and a Romulan officer were “phased” by the generator and rendered immaterial and invisible to “normal” matter. Commander Data, while acting to remove the chroniton contamination from the Enterprise -D, was coincidentally able to restore La Forge and Ro to normal space. (“The Next Phase” [TNG]).
