Hawking's scientific achievements were all the more remarkable because he was afflicted with a debilitating neural disease that kept him confined to a wheelchair, able to speak only with the aid of a speech-synthesis computer.
Commander Data devised a holodeck program that allowed him to play poker with Dr. Hawking, Albert Einstein and Sir Isaac Newton. (“Descent, Part I” [TNG]).
Professor Hawking's appearance on Star Trek was the result of a visit he made to Paramount Pictures to promote his motion-picture version of A Brief History of Time. At Paramount, he made known his dream of visiting the Enterprise. Hawking not only got to visit the sets, but he persuaded Star Trek's producers to let him make an appearance on the screen. While passing through the Main Engineering set, Hawking paused near the warp engine, smiled, and said, “I'm working on that.”

A heading is composed of two numbers measuring an azimuth value and an elevation value in degrees. A heading of 000, mark 0 describes a direction toward the geometric center of the galaxy. In terms of navigation on a planet's surface, this is analogous to describing a direction in degrees from north, in which case a course of 5 degrees would be slightly to the right of a direction directly toward the planet's north pole. Upon his revival, Henoch's intellect was allowed to “borrow” Spock's body so that android bodies could be constructed for the survivors. Henry ordered Satie's investigation discontinued after determining that her investigation was proceeding without probable cause and in violation of the Federation Constitution's Seventh Guarantee against self-incrimination. Although La Forge put a lot of effort into making the holodeck program a romantic experience, Christi eventually told him that she didn't feel “that way” about him. (“Booby Trap” [TNG]). Later that year, when Geordi's self-confidence was improved after his neuro-link with “John Doe,” Christi found Geordi much more attractive. (“Transfigurations” [TNG]).
