McCoy attended the University of Mississippi on Earth. While a student there, he met and had a romance with Emony Dax while she was visiting Earth around 2245 to judge a gymnastics competition. (“Trials and Tribble-ations” [DS9]). Early in McCoy’s medical career, his father was struck with a terrible, fatal illness. Faced with the prospect of his father suffering a terrible, lingering death, McCoy mercifully “pulled the plug” on him, allowing him to die. To McCoy’s considerable anguish, a cure for his father’s disease was discovered shortly thereafter, and McCoy carried the guilt for his father’s possibly needless death for many years. (Star Trek V: The Final Frontier). Prior to his assignment to the Enterprise, McCoy had been romantically involved with the future Nancy Crater. (“The Man Trap” [TOS]). In 2253, McCoy developed a neurosurgical technique that was used in 2372 by the Voyager’s Emergency Medical Hologram to repair the damaged cerebral cortex of Danara Pel. (“Lifesigns” [VGR]).
McCoy first joined the Enterprise crew in 2266, and remained associated with that illustrious ship and its successor for some 27 years. (Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country). In 2267, McCoy suffered a serious overdose of cordrazine in a shipboard accident. In the paranoid delusions that followed, McCoy fled the ship, then jumped through a time portal being studied by Enterprise personnel. In the past, McCoy effected serious damage to the flow of time until Kirk and Spock followed him to restore the shape of history. (“The City on the Edge of Forever” [TOS]). In 2268, McCoy was diagnosed with terminal xenopolycythemia and chose to resign from Starfleet so that he could marry a woman named Natira, high priestess of the Yonadan people. McCoy rejoined Starfleet after a cure was found in the Yonadan memory banks. (“For the World is Hollow and I Have Touched the Sky” [TOS]).
McCoy retired from Starfleet after the return of the Enterprise from the five-year mission, but he returned to Starfleet at Kirk’s request when the ship intercepted the V’Ger entity near Earth. (Star Trek: The Motion Picture). McCoy, along with Kirk, was wrongly convicted for the murder of Klingon Chancellor Gorkon in 2293, a conviction that was later overturned. McCoy was scheduled to retire shortly after the Khitomer peace conference, but he either changed his mind, or later returned to Starfleet. (Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country). As a retired Starfleet admiral, McCoy made an inspection tour of the Enterprise -D in 2364 at the age of 137. (“Encounter at Farpoint, Part I” [TNG]).
An unofficial part of McCoy’s backstory was developed by Original Series story editor Dorothy Fontana, who had written a story entitled “Joanna,” which would have established that McCoy had been married and later endured a bitter divorce, and it was the aftermath of this experience that drove him to join Starfleet. The episode would have introduced Joanna, McCoy’s now-grown daughter from that failed marriage. “Joanna” was written for the Original Series’s third season, but was so heavily rewritten (becoming “The Way to Eden” [TOS]) that Fontana removed her name from the final version.
Since this McCoy backstory was never incorporated into an episode, it isn’t “official,” at least for the purposes of this encyclopedia. On the other hand, it is mentioned here because it offers insight into the McCoy character, and because of Fontana’s pivotal role in the development of many Star Trek characters. McCoy’s first appearance was in “The Corbomite Maneuver” (TOS).

The only difference was that the duplicates were perfectly adapted to live in the extreme environmental conditions normal to a Class-Y world. In creating the duplicates, the life-form gained sentience and realized that it did not wish to be alone. Other members of the Voyager crew therefore agreed to allow themselves to be duplicated by the life-form, which called itself “silver blood,” allowing the duplicates to remain behind so that the silver blood would not need to be alone. Addendum: (Mark Shepherd). Patron of Quark’s bar. Morn made a living piloting his cargo freighter in the Bajor Sector until 2374. (“Who Mourns for Morn?” [DS9]). Morn was an excitable fellow. When Deep Space 9 faced imminent Dominion attack in 2373, Morn panicked and leaped up, hitting Quark with a barstool before running out of the bar screaming, “We’re all doomed!” Morn ran to a Bajoran shrine, falling naked onto his knees, begging the Prophets for protection. He was arrested by station security shortly thereafter. (“Blaze of Glory” [DS9]). Later, when the Dominion seized control of communications from Terok Nor, Morn served as a courier of a vital message from the station’s resistance cell to Captain Benjamin Sisko on Starbase 375. The message, which was hidden in a birthday present to Morn’s mother, warned that the Dominion was about to dismantle the minefield blockading the Bajoran wormhole. (“Favor the Bold” [DS9]). Morn attended Jadzia Dax’s prewedding party in 2374. He drank too much at the celebration and fell asleep on the floor, waking up late the next morning. (“You Are Cordially Invited” [DS9]). Morn had a checkered past. In 2365, he was one of the perpetrators of the infamous Lissepian Mother’s Day Heist, along with Hain, Larell, Krit, and Nahsk. After the heist, Morn disappeared with the 1,000 bars of gold-pressed latinum that they had stolen from the Central Bank of Lissepia. Morn laid low for several years, living in the Bajor Sector on station Terok Nor, which later became known as Deep Space 9. After the statute of limitations expired on the case, Morn faked his own death by scuttling his ship during an ion storm, after which his co-conspirators were arrested while trying to find the missing latinum. The ingenious Morn had enlisted the unwitting aid of Quark, to whom he later paid 100 bricks’ worth of latinum for his trouble. Morn’s co-conspirators never knew that he had hidden the stolen latinum in his second stomach for the entire time since the robbery, a trick made possible by the fact that Lurians have two stomachs. The only ill effect was that the liquid latinum had caused his hair to fall out. (“Who Mourns for Morn?” [DS9]). Of course, the entire character of Morn was something of a gag devised by the show’s producers: Despite the fact that he was continually referred to as talkative and excitable, we almost never actually saw him do anything except imbibe quietly at Quark’s bar. In “Who Mourns For Morn?” Mark Shepherd (sans Morn makeup) appeared briefly as the bar patron that Quark encouraged to sit in Morn’s vacated bar stool.

Many subjects suffered agonizing death or disfigurement as a result of Moset’s work, which included the exposure of living patients to lethal nadion radiation and poisonous polytrinic acid. As of 2371, Dr. Crell Moset was the Chairman of Exobiology at the University of Culat. In 2375, the Voyager crew created a holographic simulation program, re-creating Moset’s knowledge and personality in order to provide medical advice in treating crew member B’Elanna Torres, who was suffering from a cytoplasmic parasite. The program was an invaluable aid, but Voyager's Emergency Medical Hologram, upon learning of the real Moset’s practices, felt compelled by ethical considerations to delete the Moset program, along with all records of his monstrous research. (“Nothing Human” [VGR]). David Clennon played NASA lunar geologist Lee Silver in the 1998 HBO miniseries From the Earth to the Moon. The real Dr. Silver worked with Farouk El-Baz (for whom a Starfleet shuttlecraft was named) during Project Apollo.
