In 2371, chroniton particles emitted by the Romulan cloaking device became lodged in the Starship Defiant’s ablative armor matrix. (“Past Tense, Part I” [DS9]). Ablative armor technology was a closely-held secret, and until 2372, even Starfleet Operations did not know that the Defiant was so equipped. (“Paradise Lost” [DS9]).
Addendum: Starship outer hull layer designed to vaporize under weapons fire, thereby dissipating energy and protecting the ship’s interior. In 2374, the experimental prototype Starship Prometheus was equipped with ablative armor. (“Message in a Bottle” [VGR]).

Although it was banned in the Federation, physicians on planet Adigeon Prime used the technique to enhance the brain of Julian Bashir when he was almost seven years old. The procedure is illegal under laws dating back to the end of the Eugenics Wars. (“Doctor Bashir, I Presume?” [DS9]).
Addendum: Illegal medical procedure intended to enhance the mental and physical abilities of a humanoid child. The Federation ban on DNA resequencing was based on the argument that if genetically enhanced people were allowed to compete freely, all parents would feel pressured to have their children enhanced so that they could keep up. (“Statistical Probabilities” [DS9]).

The Akagi served in Picard’s armada to blockade Romulan supply ships supplying the Duras family forces during the Klingon civil war in 2368. (“Redemption, Part II” [TNG]). The Akagi was named for the Japanese carrier that fought the American warship U.S.S. Hornet in the bitter Battle of Midway in World War II. Episode writer Ron Moore thought it fitting that in Star Trek’s future, the Akagi would be serving alongside the Hornet.

The region in which most of the United Federation of Planets, including Earth, is located. The galaxy is so huge that the majority of the Alpha Quadrant remains unexplored, even in the 24th century. Station Deep Space 9 is located in Alpha Quadrant. (“Captive Pursuit” [DS9]). The Klingon and Romulan empires are located in Beta Quadrant. The reason for splitting the Federation between Alpha and Beta Quadrants was to rationalize Kirk’s line in Star Trek II that the Enterprise was the only starship in the quadrant.
Addendum: One quarter of the entire Milky Way Galaxy; the region in which most of the United Federation of Planets, including Earth, is located. The civilizations of the Alpha Quadrant faced a grave threat during the bitter and costly Dominion war of the 2370s. Numerous Alpha and Beta Quadrant powers, including the United Federation of Planets, the Klingon Empire, and the Romulan Star Empire banded together to prevent an invasion by the Founders of the Dominion.

In Hirogen society, Alpha-Hirogen refers to the leader of a pack of Hirogen hunters. One such alpha (played by Tiny Ron) commanded a Hirogen ship and was in charge of a Hirogen relay station. (“Message in a Bottle” [VGR]). This particular alpha captured Voyager crew members Tuvok and Seven of Nine, hoping to claim them as valuable prizes of the hunt. (“Hunters” [VGR]). Another alpha believed Hirogen culture, which had remained essentially unchanged for a millennium, to be in danger of stagnation. He feared that the ritual of the hunt had dominated his people so much that they were no longer growing or advancing. In 2374, he seized upon the discovery of Federation holodeck technology, proposing that his people could satisfy their need for the hunt through the use of holographic environments. He argued that this would allow his society to use its space travel resources for the technological and social advancement of the Hirogen people, instead of on increasingly unprofitable warfare. Although this alpha was killed during a simulated hunt, there were some indications that this radical idea might find acceptance among at least some of the Hirogen. SEE: French Resistance; optronic datacore. (“The Killing Game, Parts I and II.” [VGR]). Tiny Ron played the Alpha-Hirogen in “Message in a Bottle” and “Hunters,” Tony Todd was another alpha in “Prey” (VGR), and Danny Goldring was the alpha who hoped to use holodecks to create a new Hirogen society in “The Killing Game, Parts I and II.”

Alzen, along with about 50 other researchers, was part of a Srivani science team that secretly came aboard the Federation starship Voyager in 2374 to conduct invasive and dangerous medical tests on the ship’s crew. (“Scientific Method” [VGR]). Character’s name is from the script and was not mentioned in dialog.
~1:[1,#B],6:[1,#B],55:[2,#I],57:[3,#B]@1Amanin@2Psychiatrist. Amanin, from planet Betazed, developed a method of retrieving unconscious memories from a humanoid mind, utilizing a combination of sensory isolation and focused breathing. Such recovered memories were, however, found to sometimes be the product of unrelated stimuli and could therefore be wildly inaccurate if not corroborated by other evidence. In 2374, Starship Voyager's Emergency Medical Hologram incorporated Ananim’s memory reconstruction methods into his psychiatric routines. (“Retrospect” [VGR]).

~1:[1,#B],8:[1,#B],14:[2,#B],73:[3,#I]@1Anij@2(Donna Murphy). Member of the peaceful Ba’ku community. Anij was drawn to Jean-Luc Picard when he visited her world in 2375, and the two quickly formed a deep personal bond, despite her strong distrust of offlanders. Like most of her people, Anij had the ability to live in the moment to such a degree that time for them would slow to a crawl. To accomplish this, she entered a meditative state (Star Trek: Insurrection).
~1:[1,#B],12:[2,#I],23:[2,#B],28:[2,#B]@1animazine@2Stimulant drug. Krenim scientist who worked to develop a temporal weapon of mass destruction. In an alternate timeline, Annorax was one of the greatest mass murderers in the galaxy, rivaling even the Borg collective. In this alternate timeline, Annorax developed the Krenim temporal weapon ship and used it against the Rilnar, enemies of the Krenim. Unfortunately, Annorax had failed to adequately consider the complexities of temporal mechanics. The elimination of the Rilnar from history left his people susceptible to a deadly disease that left some 50 million Krenim dead, including his beloved wife. Annorax spent the next 200 years using his temporal weapon, trying to restore his people’s original timeline, but each use brought further unpredicted side effects. In the process, he destroyed thousands of worlds, eliminating billions of innocent lives, but he was never able to entirely restore his people. The alternate Annorax was himself eliminated when his ship was attacked by the Federation starship Voyager, causing a temporal incursion that removed the Krenim ship from the timeline. SEE: Obrist. (“Year of Hell, Parts I and II” [VGR]). Kurtwood Smith played the Federation President in Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country, as well as Thrax in “Things Past” (DS9). Annorax was apparently named for Professor Pierre Aronnax, a character in Jules Verne’s novel 20,000 Leagues under the Sea. (In “Year of Hell,” Tom Paris compared Annorax to Captain Nemo, another character from Verne’s novel.)

Captain Kirk and Ensign Garrovick used an antigrav to carry an antimatter bomb on planet Tycho IV on stardate 3619. (“Obsession” [TOS]). Two antigravs were used to carry the deactivated Nomad to the transporter room just prior to that robot’s destruction. (“The Changeling” [TOS]). Antigravs were also used for handling of Ambassador Kollos’s protective container aboard the Enterprise. (“Is There in Truth No Beauty?” [TOS]). Antigravs were also built into small equipment pallets used for handling cargo. A graviton inverter circuit was a key component of an antigrav. (“Hollow Pursuits” [TNG]). Antigravs can become unreliable in the presence of high radiation levels. (“Disaster” [TNG]). When a worker on station Deep Space 9 injured his back in 2369, Dr. Julian Bashir advised him to use an antigrav to avoid further problems. (“The Passenger” [DS9]). Starfleet shuttlecraft were equipped with antigrav thrusters for emergency landings. (“Coda” [VGR]).
Addendum: Gravity repulsion device. Antigrav thrusters were used by some Federation starships during the terminal phase of landing on a planetary surface, as well as for takeoff. (“Demon” [VGR]).

The Argolis Cluster was the location of the ecologically devastated planet Tagra IV. (“True-Q” [TNG]).
Addendum: Stellar group. Argolis contained many protostars. The cluster was the hiding place of a Dominion sensor array that provided a critical tactical advantage over the Federation Starfleet during the devastating Dominion war in 2374. The massive Dominion array was destroyed on stardate 51145 by the Federation starship Defiant, commanded by Lieutenant Commander Jadzia Dax. (“Behind the Lines” [DS9]). The Argolis Cluster was located near Betazed and the Kalandra Sector. (“The Reckoning” [DS9]).
~1:[1,#B]@1arithrazine@2Powerful pharmaceutical used to treat theta radiation poisoning. Starfleet regulations stipulate that a physician must be present whenever arithrazine is administered. Like many of his people, Arturis was a gifted linguist. When his people were assimilated by the Borg in 2374, Arturis reasoned that the Federation starship Voyager's aid to the Borg against Species 8472 was responsible. He believed that had Voyager not so allied themselves, the Borg would have been defeated by Species 8472, and his people would not have been assimilated. Seeking revenge, Arturis created an elaborate trap to convince the Voyager crew that Starfleet had sent an advanced starship, the U.S.S. Dauntless, to rescue them. In fact, there was no Federation starship Dauntless; the vessel was a fake onto which Arturis hoped to trap the Voyager crew so that they could be sent into Borg space to be assimilated. The Voyager crew discovered the deception in time to escape Arturis’s trap, but Arturis himself was assimilated when his ship entered Borg space. (“Hope and Fear” [VGR]). Ray Wise previously played Liko in “Who Watches the Watchers?” (TNG).

The upgraded facility, now incorporating both Borg and Starfleet technology, was activated on stardate 51212. The Astrometrics Lab was utilized as a sophisticated navigational tool, calculating the starship’s position relative to the center of the galaxy. (“Year of Hell, Parts I and II” [VGR]). “Year of Hell” was the first episode to introduce the Astrometrics Lab.
