The phage consumed the Vidiians’ bodies, destroying their genetic codes and cellular structures. There was no known cure for the phage, and the Vidiians survived as a species only by making extensive use of organ transplantation. (“Phage” [VGR]). One of the symptoms of the early stages of the phage is excruciating joint pain. Some who are infected have been known to die from the agony itself. Klingon physiology was resistant to the phage, and Vidiian scientist Sulan believed that Klingon genetic material extracted from B’Elanna Torres would eventually lead to a cure for the disease. Hundreds of type-3 phaser rifles were captured from Kriosian rebels in 2367 by the Klingon government, evidence that the Federation was aiding the rebels. Investigation revealed the weapons to be Romulan in origin. (“The Mind’s Eye” [TNG]). Federation phaser rifles can be modified to emit an expanding energy pulse. The pulse does not harm equipment, but does affect some living beings. In 2371, the crew of the U.S.S. Defiant used phasers configured in this manner to sweep the ship for a Founder who was sabotaging their starship. (“The Adversary” [DS9]). Even less frequently used were compression phaser rifles, although some Federation starships, including the U.S.S. Voyager, carried them in their weapons inventory for contingency situations. (“Caretaker” [VGR]). In 2372, a standard-issue Starfleet type-3 phaser rifle had 16 beam settings, a fully autonomous recharge, and multiple target acquisition, and was gyrostabilized. A phaser rifle was used only once during the Original Series, the one wielded by Kirk in “Where No Man Has Gone Before.” Phaser rifles were not used for the first few seasons of Star Trek: The Next Generation, until “The Mind’s Eye,” because it was believed that type-1 and type-2 phasers were powerful enough to handle just about anything.

Phaser type-2 weapons were capable of power settings as high as 16. (“Frame of Mind” [TNG]). Type-3 phasers, also known as phaser rifles, were seldom used. By 2367, the effective tactical range of shipboard phaser banks (and most directed-energy weapons) was about 300,000 kilometers (about one light-second). Ship’s phasers could be reconfigured to drill into planetary surfaces, and could effectively drill to great depths. (“Inheritance” [TNG]). Ship’s phasers were also used to drill into a planet in the episodes “Legacy” (TNG) and “A Matter of Time” (TNG). Phasers did not exist during the 22nd century, according to Worf in “A Matter of Time” (TNG), so they had to have been invented no earlier than the year 2200. Phasers were apparently not in common use as late as 2254, when the Enterprise landing party in “The Cage” (TOS) was equipped with laser weapons.

Maxwell said his actions were intended to prove his suspicions that the Cardassians had been planning a new offensive against the Federation. Maxwell was subsequently relieved of command of the Phoenix. (“The Wounded” [TNG]). The dedication plaque for the Phoenix in Maxwell’s ready room carried the motto,”There will be an answer, let it be.” The Phoenix was the first appearance of a Nebula -Class ship. The starship was presumably named after Zefram Cochrane’s historic warp ship that first broke the light-speed barrier in 2063.

The Phoenix made its historic first warp flight on April 4, 2063, piloted by Zefram Cochrane, symbolically rising from the ashes of World War III, ushering in a new era for humankind. The flight of the Phoenix was directly responsible for Earth’s first contact with extraterrestrials, leading to Earth’s recovery from the postatomic horror. The Phoenix later was placed on display at the Smithsonian Institution, and was the subject of a course taught at the Starfleet Academy. (Star Trek: First Contact). The ship was named for the immortal bird from Egyptian mythology that periodically was consumed in fire, then arose from the ashes reborn. The warhead can be removed from a photon torpedo, leaving a small, high-speed missile that can be used as an instrumented probe, to transport small objects (“The Emissary” [TNG]), and even for burials in space.
