(“Rules of Acquisition” [DS9]). The Dominion was established two millenia ago (“To the Death” [DS9]) by the reclusive Founders who controlled hundreds of planets. Although the Founders themselves were almost never seen, Dominion power was brutally exercised by the Jem’Hadar, insuring compliance with the Founders’ rule. (“The Jem’Hadar” [DS9], “The Search, Parts I and II” [DS9]). For example, when a planet in the Teplan system resisted Dominion control in 2172, the Jem’Hadar punished the planet’s population by unleashing a disease, called the blight, that caused terrible suffering for centuries. SEE: Teplan blight. (“The Quickening” [DS9]). In 2340, the Dominion invaded and conquered planet Yadera Prime (“Shadowplay” [DS9]) and the T-Rogorans in 2370. (“Sanctuary” [DS9]). The Dominion planted agents in the Alpha Quadrant, so by late 2370, these agents provided the Dominion with tactical intelligence on the Federation and other Alpha Quadrant powers. SEE: Eris; Krajensky, Ambassador; Lovok, Colonel. Such agents, often Founders posing as members of other species, also worked to destabilize the Alpha Quadrant, apparently as an ongoing prelude to a Dominion invasion. (“The Die is Cast” [DS9], “The Adversary” [DS9]). The Dominion objected to the incursion of Alpha Quadrant cultures into the Gamma Quadrant. In late 2370, they made their displeasure known by destroying a number of ships and wiping out the New Bajor colony. (“The Jem’Hadar” [DS9]). Dominion operatives captured several members of the Starship Defiant command crew in 2371 in an effort to learn how strongly life-forms in the Alpha Quadrant would resist a Dominion incursion into that part of the galaxy. (“The Search, Parts I and II” [DS9]). In 2373, the Dominion entered into an alliance with the Cardassian Union, giving the Founders a significant stronghold in the Alpha Quadrant. Gul Dukat brokered the agreement after secret talks. (“By Inferno’s Light” [DS9]). SEE: Vorta. The Dominion was first mentioned in “Rules of Acquisition” (DS9).

These people had originally left Earth 200 years ago in order to preserve their cultural identity. In 2370 the Federation-Cardassian treaty placed Dorvan V under Cardassian jurisdiction. As a result, Enterprise -D captain Picard was ordered by Admiral Necheyev to evacuate the colonists by any means necessary. Postulated by Earth astronomer Frank Drake before his planet’s first contact with explorers from planet Vulcan, the Drake Equation was based on estimates of the total number of stars in the galaxy, the fraction of those stars that had planetary systems, the fraction of those planets that could support life, and so on. A copy of the Drake Equation was posted on the wall of the SETI laboratory where astronomer Rain Robinson worked in 1996. (“Future’s End, Part I” [VGR]). The Drake Equation was also part of Gene Roddenberry’s first outline for the original Star Trek series, written in 1964. Roddenberry wanted to use the equation to show that the idea of alien civilizations on other worlds was within the realm of scientific possibility. Unfortunately, while Roddenberry knew of the Drake Equation, he did not have an actual copy of the formula. Under pressure of a deadline, Roddenberry simply made up a plausible-looking version of what he thought it might look like. Once he was successful in selling the Star Trek concept to Desilu Studios and NBC, he never got around to “correcting” the outline. The formula posted in Rain Robinson’s lab, shown here, incorporates both versions. The top line is Dr. Drake’s version, and the second line is the Drake Equation according to Gene Roddenberry. Dr. Drake has gently pointed out that an value raised to the first power is merely the value itself.

The Dreadnought was programmed to destroy a Maquis munitions base on planetoid Alpha 441 in the Badlands. The weapon carried a charge of a thousand kilograms of matter and an equal amount of antimatter, enough explosive power to destroy a small moon. Dreadnought was controlled by a sophisticated computer system that was highly adaptable, capable of evasion, and equipped with advanced defensive weaponry. The Dreadnought failed to detonate at its target and was subsequently captured by the Maquis, who reprogrammed it to destroy a Cardassian fuel depot on planet Aschelan V. The reprogramming was accomplished by Maquis member B’Elanna Torres. One day after the Dreadnought was launched toward Aschelan V, it was captured by the Caretaker and brought into the Delta Quadrant. In this unfamiliar environment, the Dreadnought’s control computer locked onto planet Rakosa V, threatening Rakosa’s two million inhabitants. Drema IV possesses the largest deposits of dilithium ore ever recorded. This ore is laid down in unusually aligned lattices that converted the planet’s geologic heat into mechanical stress, thus resulting in significant tectonic instabilities that nearly destroyed the planet. While possessing some advanced technology, this planet was still under Prime Directive protection in 2365, and thus the discovery that Enterprise -D officer Data had been in radio contact with an inhabitant of the planet presented a significant problem. While the Prime Directive prohibited contact with the inhabitants, humanitarian considerations demanded a means of assistance that avoided cultural contamination. Such a means was found, and the geological instabilities were neutralized by the use of resonator probes launched from orbit without the knowledge of the planet’s inhabitants. (“Pen Pals” [TNG]).
