(In anti-time future, Picard lived at his family vineyards in France, having retired from an ambassadorial post. In this reality, Beverly Crusher Picard had once been his wife, and was currently serving as captain of the Federation medical ship Pasteur. William Riker was, in this time, an admiral, and was the commander of Starbase 247. He had saved the Enterprise -D from being decommissioned, and was using her as his personal flagship. This Enterprise -D had been outfitted with a third warp nacelle, a cloaking device, and improved weaponry. In this time period, Deanna Troi had died in 2375. The incident had left Riker and Worf’s relationship strained. They had not spoken for 20 years, both feeling that the other was at fault for the fact that neither one had established a permanent relationship with Deanna. Worf had returned to the Klingon Empire, where he had spent some time as a member of the Klingon High Council. By this 2395, he was serving as governor of the H’atoria Colony. Geordi La Forge, in this reality, had left Starfleet, had gotten married, and was raising three children along with his wife, Leah. He had acquired a set of cybernetic eyes, replacing his VISOR. This Geordi was an author; his wife was director of the Daystrom Institute. If Geordi’s wife in this future was the former Leah Brahms, it was not made clear what happened to Leah’s former husband. Finally, Data in this reality had also left Starfleet and held the Lucasian Chair at Cambridge University. This Data had grown more at ease with his humanity, had gained the ability to use contractions, and had acquired a rather amazing collection of cats. In this reality, Picard collected his old crew and convinced them to travel to the Devron system to investigate a temporal anomaly there. This was made more difficult because the Picard of this time reality suffered from Irumodic Syndrome and his insistence that he was traveling through time was first dismissed as the ravings of a man gone senile from his disease.) We suspect that this future should be regarded as an alternate quantum reality, a possible future, but not necessarily the one that will unfold in the “real” Star Trek timeline. In particular, we don’t know when or if the warp scale might be recalibrated again to make warp 13 speeds a reality.

(Picard found this anti-time past to differ somewhat from history as he remembered it. The mission to Farpoint Station, which was to be the Enterprise -D’s first, was canceled, and the ship was ordered to the Devron system to investigate an anomaly there. Picard initially disobeyed these orders and took the ship to the point in space where the crew had originally encountered Q in 2364. When Q did not appear, the Enterprise -D continued to the Devron system, where the crew initiated the inverse tachyon beam that apparently caused the anomaly.) (“All Good Things...” [TNG]). Much of the original costuming and set dressing from Star Trek: The Next Generation’s first season was used for the anti-time past sequences. Careful viewers will note the switch of conn and ops positions on the bridge that hearkens back to the pilot episode and that production designer Richard James even restored the sculptures of the first five Starships Enterprise to the ship’s Observation Lounge. Data, however, is wearing Lieutenant Junior Grade pips, instead of the Lieutenant Commander pips he wore throughout the series. (This is a prime example of what happens when you let Q mess with the space-time continuum.) Note that we assume the anti-time past scenes are essentially “real” up to the point where Starfleet canceled the Farpoint mission. Even though the backstory of Tasha piloting Picard to the Enterprise -D contradicts some information established earlier, we felt the “All Good Things...” version was more widely accepted by both viewers and the show’s writing staff.

Anti-time is the opposite of time, in much the same manner as antimatter is the opposite of matter. If time and anti-time were to collide, they would annihilate each other, causing a rupture in the fabric of space. This phenomenon apparently occurred in the Devron system, where starships from three separate time periods—2364, 2370, and 2395—all began to scan a temporal anomaly with inverse tachyon beams. The anomaly was a temporal paradox apparently created by these beams. Within the paradox, Captain Jean-Luc Picard found himself traveling between the three time periods, acting and reacting as if he belonged in each one. The phenomenon was actually caused by the Q Continuum, who devised this as a test of mankind, to learn if humanity (as represented by Jean-Luc Picard) could stretch its mind to comprehend other levels of existence. Had Picard been unable to understand the paradox and fix the temporal rift, humanity’s fate would have been sealed, but Picard was successful in restoring the timeline. (“All Good Things…” [TNG]). We assume that the anti-time events in “All Good Things” (TNG) should be viewed as alternate quantum realities, but the fact that no one except Picard remembered any of the anti-time events might lead one to suspect that what we witnessed may have been created by Q, strictly for Picard’s benefit. Even if the anti-time events were “real,” it seems unlikely that the future will unfold in the same manner, since our heroes were determined to change things. Already, we know that the Enterprise -D will not exist in 2395, since we saw it destroyed in Star Trek Generations.
