1:[2,#B],8:[2,#B],30:[2,#B],61:[1,#B]@1aphasia virus@2Virus created by Bajoran scientist Dekon Elig, intended to be used as a terrorist weapon against the Cardassians. The disease organism would have been delivered through an aphasia device planted in a food replicator by the Bajoran underground. Once contracted, the virus would find its way to temporal lobes and disrupt normal communication processes, causing a type of aphasia. As the virus spread, it attacked the autonomic nervous system, causing a coma, then death. The aphasia virus was accidentally unleashed on Deep Space 9 in 2369, ironically after the Cardassians had abandoned the station. (“Babel” [DS9]).
~1:[1,#B],60:[2,#B]@1aphasia@2Dysfunction of certain brain centers affecting the ability to communicate in a coherent manner. Different forms of aphasia exist, but the type that afflicted the members of Deep Space 9 in 2369 caused an inability of the brain to process audio and visual stimuli, making the victims incapable of understanding others or expressing themselves coherently. (“Babel” [DS9]). SEE: aphasia device.
~1:[2,#B],7:[1,#B],10:[2,#B]@1Apnex Sea@2Oceanic body on planet Romulus. Romulan admiral Alidar Jarok's home was located near the Apnex Sea. (“The Defector” [TNG]).
~1:[2,#B],8:[4,#B]@1Apollinaire, Dr.@2(James Gleason). Physician at the Sisters of Hope Infirmary in 19th-century San Francisco on Earth. Not noted for tact in dealing with female nurses. (“Time’s Arrow, Part II” [TNG]).

The spacecraft was launched by a huge chemically-fueled rocket vehicle known as a Saturn V. Apollo 11 astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin became the first humans to set foot on another world, describing the achievement as “one small step for [a] man, one giant leap for mankind.” (“Tomorrow is Yesterday” [TOS]). Apollo 11 was not directly mentioned in the episode, but the radio broadcast picked up by the Enterprise referred to the impending launch of the first moon landing mission. A model of the Apollo 11 command/service module could be seen in Wesley Crusher’s quarters at Starfleet Academy in “The First Duty” (TNG). Harry Kim’s San Francisco apartment in “Non Sequitur” (VGR) had a framed certificate on the wall, thanking Kim for his contribution to Starfleet’s Apollo 11 quadricentennial celebration.
~1:[1,#BI],2:[2,#B],13:[2,#BI],19:[1,#B],27:[1,#I],30:[22,#I]@1Apollo -class starship@2Conjectural designation for a type of Federation starship. The U.S.S. Ajax, which was Ensign Cortin Zweller's first assignment after Starfleet Academy, was an Apollo -class starship. Named for the sun god in Earth’s Greek mythology, as well as for the spacecraft that first carried humans to the moon.
~1:[1,#B],90:[2,#B],115:[2,#I],137:[1,#I],156:[3,#B]@1Apollo@2(Michael Forest). Humanoid entity once worshiped as a god by the ancient Greeks on planet Earth. To the ancient Greeks, Apollo was the god of light and purity, skilled in the bow and on the lyre. He was the twin brother of Artemis, son of the god Zeus and Latona, a mortal. The extraterrestrial Apollo and his fellow “gods” had an extra organ in their chests that apparently gave them the ability to channel considerable energy, giving them godlike powers. After leaving ancient Earth, Apollo settled on planet Pollux IV, where he grew to miss the adulation he had received from the Greeks. In 2267, he attempted to capture the crew of the Starship Enterprise, inviting them to live on the planet and to worship him as a god. When it became clear that the Enterprise crew could not comply, he spread himself against the wind and disappeared. (“Who Mourns for Adonais?” [TOS]). SEE: Palamas, Lieutenant Carolyn.

~1:[2,#B],15:[2,#B],38:[1,#B]@1Appel, Ed@2(Brad Weston). Chief processing engineer at the underground mining colony on planet Janus VI in 2267. Appel helped to defend the colony against an unknown adversary later learned to be a life-form known as a Horta. (“The Devil in the Dark” [TOS]).
~1:[4,#B],10:[2,#BI],27:[1,#I],38:[1,#I],49:[29,#I],80:[3,#I]@1April, Captain Robert T.@2First captain of the original Starship Enterprise. April assumed command of the ship when it was launched in 2245 and helmed the Enterprise's first five-year mission of deep-space exploration. April was succeeded as Enterprise commander by Christopher Pike and later by James T. Kirk. April is, of course, totally conjectural, but is being included at Gene Roddenberry’s suggestion. Gene had used the character name for the ship’s commander in his first proposal for Star Trek, written in 1964.
~1:[2,#B],18:[1,#I],30:[3,#B]@1aquatic lab@2Science facility devoted to the study of water-dwelling life-forms. Many of the crew of the Enterprise -D retreated to the ship’s aquatic lab following their exposure to Barclay’s Protomorphosis Syndrome in 2370. (“Genesis” [TNG]).
~1:[2,#B],26:[1,#B],41:[1,#I]@1aqueduct systems@2Network of canals and aboveground water conduits that provide water for drinking, sanitation, and agriculture. Ancient aqueducts provided water to part of planet Bajor, and Captain Jean-Luc Picard attended a conference on management of this system when the Enterprise -D visited Deep Space 9 late in 2369. (“Birthright, Part I” [TNG]).
~1:[2,#B],22:[1,#B],28:[2,#B]@1Aquino, Ensign@2Starfleet officer who served at station Deep Space 9. Aquino was killed in 2369 after investigating a security breach. Neela, who had planned to assassinate Vedek Bareil, was preparing her escape route when Ensign Aquino caught her in the act. Neela killed the ensign, then tried to conceal the crime by placing him into a conduit where energy bursts would reduce the body to ashes. (“In the Hands of the Prophets” [DS9]).

~1:[1,#B],4:[1,#B],10:[1,#B],34:[1,#B],69:[12,#I]@1Arak’Taral@2(Stephen Davies). Jem’Hadar soldier, second in command to Goran’Agar. In 2372, Goran’Agar brought his crew to Bopak III because he believed that the planet could cure his men of their addiction to ketracel-white. Arak’Taral was against Goran’Agar’s idea of curing their addiction if it meant becoming “soft” like humans. Arak’Taral was killed around stardate 49066 by Goran’Agar when he refused to follow Goran’Agar’s orders. (“Hippocratic Oath” [DS9]). Arak’Taral’s name was not mentioned in dialog, but is from the script.
~1:[1,#B],14:[1,#B],17:[2,#B],55:[1,#BI],63:[40,#I]@1Arandis@2(Vanessa Williams). Chief facilitator for the entire Temtibi Lagoon on the planet Risa in 2373. Curzon Dax had been a good friend of Arandis, and the two spent a lot of time together on his last trip to Risa in 2367. Curzon died while making love with Arandis. She termed it “death by jamaharon.” (“Let He Who Is Without Sin…” [DS9]). We saw Curzon die in a flashback in “Emissary” (DS9), although Arandis was nowhere to be seen in that shot. We speculate that he suffered a serious heart attack in her presence, then died shortly after in a hospital room.

Jean-Luc Picard served as Arbiter of Succession following the death of K’mpec in 2367. Picard ruled Gowron to be the sole challenger for council leader. (“Reunion” [TNG]). Picard later rejected a last-minute bid by Toral for the council leadership on the grounds that Toral had not yet distinguished himself in the service of the empire. (“Redemption, Part I” [TNG]).

~1:[1,#B],16:[1,#I],58:[2,#B],73:[3,#B],95:[30,#I]@1arboretum@2Science lab aboard Federation starships devoted to study of plants. The arboretum aboard the Enterprise -D was located on deck 17, section 21-alpha. The flooring in the arboretum was covered with soil and planted with various vegetative species, both for scientific study and for the enjoyment of the crew. The arboretum was the primary workstation of Keiko O’Brien, prior to her transfer to DS9. In 2370, following the crew’s exposure to Barclay’s Protomorphosis Syndrome, much of the devolved crew were found in the ship’s arboretum, taking advantage of the “natural” atmosphere. (“Genesis” [TNG]). The arboretum has been seen in such episodes as “Data’s Day” (TNG), “Imaginary Friend” (TNG) and “Dark Page” (TNG) and was mentioned in “Genesis” (TNG) and “The Nth Degree” (TNG).
~1:[1,#B],7:[1,#B],30:[1,#I]@1arch@2An inner doorway in some holodeck entrances. When used, the arch can be a demarcation between the simulated world of the holodeck and the outside world of the Enterprise -D corridors. Dr. Roger Korby made many significant medical discoveries through archaeology, becoming known as the “Pasteur of archaeological medicine.” (“What Are Little Girls Made Of?” [TOS]). Enterprise -D captain Jean-Luc Picard was an enthusiast of archaeology since his academy days, having studied the ancient Iconians. (“Contagion” [TNG]). One of the most noted figures in the field of archaeology was Professor Richard Galen, who, in 2369, demonstrated that many species of humanoid life in the galaxy evolved from a common progenetor. ~1:[2,#B],13:[3,#B],18:[3,#B],27:[1,#B]@1Archanis IV@2Fourth planet orbiting Archanis. While under the influence of the Beta XII-A entity in 2268, Pavel A. Chekov said he had a brother named Piotr who was murdered by Klingons at the Archanis IV research outpost. Chekov had no such brother. (“Day of the Dove” [TOS]). The Klingons had an ancient claim to the planet that they relinquished in 2272. A century later, Klingon chancellor Gowron demanded that the Federation withdraw from Archanis IV and abandon all of the bases in the surrounding sector. (“Broken Link” [DS9]).
~1:[1,#B],13:[1,#I],28:[1,#B]@1Archanis@2Star. Sulu used Archanis as a navigational reference when the original Enterprise was thrown across the galaxy in 2267 by the advanced civilization known as the Metrons. (“Arena” [TOS]). The sector surrounding Archanis contained several Federation starbases and military installations. In 2372, Klingon chancellor Gowron demanded that the Federation withdraw from the sector and abandon all of its bases there. (“Broken Link” [DS9]). Shortly thereafter, Archanis was conquered by the Klingons. (“Apocalypse Rising” [DS9], “Nor the Battle to the Strong” [DS9]).

~1:[1,#B],9:[1,#B],11:[2,#I],23:[1,#B]@1Ardana@2Class-M planet, location of the cloud city Stratos. The Starship Enterprise visited Ardana in 2269 to pick up a consignment of zenite, but the delivery was delayed because of a dispute between the wealthy Ardanans who lived in Stratos, and the workers who lived on the surface below. Ardana is a Federation member. (“The Cloud Minders” [TOS]).
~1:[1,#B],12:[2,#B],91:[1,#I]@1Ardra@2(Marta DuBois). A mythic figure in the theology of planet Ventax II. According to Ventaxian legend, Ardra appeared a thousand years ago and promised the Ventaxian people a millennium of peace and prosperity. At the end of that time, Ardra promised to return and enslave the population. According to this mythology, Ardra’s return was to be heralded by “the shaking of the cities” and other paranormal phenomena. These prophecies apparently came to pass in 2367 when a humanoid female appeared on Ventax II, identifying herself as Ardra. Investigation by Enterprise -D personnel determined, however, that this person was a con artist using various technological tricks to simulate Ventaxian prophecy. (“Devil’s Due” [TNG]).

Formerly a violent people, the Argelians underwent a social upheaval in 2067 they called their Great Awakening, in which their society turned to peace. In 2267, the U.S.S. Enterprise visited the planet for shore leave. During their stay, Montgomery Scott was extradited for the murder of two women. Having no current laws regarding murder, the Argelians were forced to rely on their brutal ancient codes established before the Great Awakening. (“Wolf in the Fold” [TOS]). ~1:[1,#B],7:[1,#B]@1Argrathi@2Humanoid society native to planet Argratha. The Argrathi had an unusual form of punishment for criminals that involved implanting memories into the accused’s brain. These memories would cause the criminal to have effectively experienced years of brutal incarceration, when in reality, no actual prison time was served, thereby saving the Argrathi government the cost of building and operating prisons. In 2372, Miles O’Brien was accused of espionage and implanted with the memory of a 20-year prison sentence. (“Hard Time” [DS9]).

Enterprise -D personnel discovered that the array’s fusion reactors had gone unstable and were threatening to overload. An alien probe, sent by the Cytherians, was later found to be responsible for the malfunctions. (“The Nth Degree” [TNG]). (In an alternate quantum reality visited by Worf during 2370, the Argus Array became the subject of an investigation by the Enterprise -D. The array had been tampered with, apparently by Cardassians, and reset to survey sensitive Starfleet installations and relay that data to a sector outside Federation space. In yet another quantum reality, the array was destroyed by Cardassians, and in a third, it was destroyed by Bajorans. In yet another, the array remained intact, but had ceased functioning because of a mechanical failure.) (“Parallels” [TNG]). One of the images shown on Geordi’s screen was a re-use of the Regula I space station from Star Trek II, and another was the S.S. Birdseye from “The Neutral Zone” (TNG). One of the planet images was an alien city designed by Anthony Fredrickson, and the other was a painting of the Utopia Planitia Fleet Yards surface facilities by Rick Sternbach and Mike Okuda.

~1:[1,#B],5:[1,#B],59:[1,#B],61:[2,#B]@1Arjin@2(Geoffrey Blake). Trill initiate who became a host candidate because he hoped to fulfill his father’s wishes. Arjin worked hard to attain the goal of joining, winning honors in astrophysics and even becoming a fifth-level pilot. Arjin did not, however, have a clear idea of what he would do with his life, if and when he were joined. His field docent, Jadzia Dax, pointed this out to him in 2370, during his initiate training. This was a difficult realization for Arjin, but it helped him find a greater sense of purpose. (“Playing God” [DS9]).

~1:[1,#B],9:[2,#B],85:[1,#I],89:[2,#B]@1Armus@2(Mart McChesney). A malevolent life-form on planet Vagra II. Armus was formed when the inhabitants of Vagra II developed a means of ridding themselves of all that was evil within themselves. The Vagrans all departed from their home as creatures of dazzling beauty, leaving behind Armus, whose malevolence was compounded by the loneliness of having been abandoned. Armus resembled an oil slick, but was capable of forming himself into a humanoid shape, and could also generate force fields of considerable strength. Armus killed Enterprise -D security chief Natasha Yar when Yar was participating in a rescue mission on Vagra II. Armus had no apparent motive for the murder, except for his own amusement. Armus is believed to still exist on Vagra II. (“Skin of Evil” [TNG]).
