  35. Notes                   : On the 24th of February 1996 Id Software finally
  36.                           released the Quake Test. After a two year wait
  37.                           everyone calls their friends while they download
  38.                           it. The reaction is subdued. Yeah, John said it
  39.                           was a test, but we were expecting to be blown off
  40.                           our feet. As it was, yeah, the lighting is nice
  41.                           and the scenery gives a good atmosphere. But
  42.                           thats all we could say.
  43.
  44.                           For Id this must have been a dark day. They told
  45.                           us it was a test and we knew it was a test, but we
  46.                           expected they were further along than this.
  47.
  48.                           As it turns out, they were. Within 24 hours a
  49.                           weary-eyed hacker discovers that the test does
  50.                           infact contain monsters, and reveals the hack
  51.                           that can enable them.
  52.
  53.                           12 hours ago I started playing around with this
  54.                           and and was blown away. These monsters are
  55.                           amazing! All of a sudden the dreary Quake test
  56.                           is transformed from a depressing footnote in
  57.                           Id's impending obituary to proof that Quake
  58.                           really will rock our world. Yeah!!!!!!!!!!
  59.
  60.                           So bear with Id. Lets Give them the benefit of the
  61.                           doubt and a little more time. This scenario I
  62.                           constructed will show you that Quake will deliver
  63.                           great things. Infact you can get a really good
  64.                           taste of them RIGHT NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  65.
  66.                           See the installation instructions above.
  67.
  68.
  69. Description             : You had so many dreams when you started that
  70.                           small software company. Your bright idea soon
  71.                           became a spiffy product that swept the net and
  72.                           overnight you were a success. You married your
  73.                           sweetheart and started a family. You bought
  74.                           your parents a new house so they could move out
  75.                           of that syringe carpet neighbourhood. Your wife
  76.                           become involved in charity helping the poor and
  77.                           the homeless while you worked on new and
  78.                           wonderful code. You were going to make the world a
  79.                           better place.
  80.
  81.                           But somewhere in Redmond WA someone is making
  82.                           other plans. A press release announces that
  83.                           Microsoft will be building your software
  84.                           function into NT and giving it away for free.
  85.                           The phones stop ringing. The banks threaten
  86.                           foreclose. You call the local TV station but NBC
  87.                           is to busy running stories about Windows 96 and
  88.                           setting up MS-NBC cable to care. You now have
  89.                           no choice. You must go see the man and
  90.                           beg him to leave you and your company alone.
  91.
  92.                           Landing in Seattle you catch a taxi to Microsoft.
  93.                           You slip in through the service entry and
  94.                           follow the trail of yes men to the master. The
  95.                           yes men disappear and he hops in an elevator
  96.                           going down. This is your chance. Maybe with his
  97.                           corporate pitbulls gone you can talk one on one
  98.                           and he'll reveal that he is at heart a caring,
  99.                           sensitive and misunderstood guy.
  100.
  101.                           You use the next elevator. You get off in the
  102.                           dim and dank basement. You wonder why Microsoft
  103.                           built its hq on an ancient stone ruins?  You
  104.                           dismiss these thoughts as you see Bill alone,
  105.                           praying.
  106.
  107.                           But hang on!!! Hes "praying" before a wall
  108.                           nailed with skinned faces! What's going on here?
  109.                           Confused you call out "Mr. Gates?" He turns
  110.                           around, but now you see hes morfed into a
  111.                           monster with the head of a floating giant tapeworm.
  112.                           He hisses at you menacingly, and starts
  113.                           chanting "One Microsoft Way! One Microsoft Way!"
  114.
  115.                           Closeby you hear rattles of armor as God knows
  116.                           what denizens rush in to grab you. You grab
  117.                           a nearby shotgun and jump through a big hole
  118.                           in the floor. Above you you hear a lot of noise,
  119.                           but now you're more worried about the blood
  120.                           curdling shriek accompanied by hot breath on
  121.                           your neck. Something is in here with you!
  122.
  123.                           You load the shotgun and slam it shut. You
  124.                           grimace. "So he's the Antichrist. Now it
  125.                           all makes sense. Well, I'm gunna send him
  126.                           back to Hell or my name isn't Marc Andersen.
  127.                           Long live NetScape!!!!!"
  128.
  129.
  130. Additional Notes        : I made this by taking TEST1.BSP and hacking it
  131.                           with a hex editor. I added the monsters, but
  132.                           there wasnt a lot of room. I took out one of
  133.                           the Deathmatch starts, so dont act surprised
  134.                           if it falls over if you run it in that mode.
  135.                           I wanted to include some other monsters, but
  136.                           many of them are only "half baked". The
  137.                           Shalrath is fantastic, but I think I broke a
  138.                           limit when I tried to include it.
  139.
  140.                           This'll give you a good pulse-pounding welcome
  141.                           that Id should have delivered with the original
  142.                           test.
  143.
  144. Caution                 : Because this is a patch it will only work with
  145.                           QTEST1. It probably wont work with after versions.
