- | Welcome to "User Supported Software" (Shareware). |
- | This remarkable revolution in software distribution |
- | was co-pioneered in 1982 by Jim Button and Andrew |
- | Fluegelman. It has become a major force in the |
- | software industry, helping to reduce software prices |
- | and eliminate copy protection schemes. |
- +-------------------------------------------------------+
-
-
- HERE'S HOW SHAREWARE WORKS:
-
- You are encouraged to copy the PC-Type II diskettes and share them freely
- with others. You have the luxury of trying out the complete programs, at
- your own pace and in the comfort of your own home or workplace. This is not
- a crippled or "demo" copy, but the complete working version of the program.
-
- After you have used PC-Type II for a reasonable evaluation period you should
- either discontinue use of the program or purchase a licensed copy from
- ButtonWare or from an authorized dealer. Your support is important and
- greatly appreciated. With it, Shareware authors are encouraged to design
- and distribute new products. Without it, a great deal of high quality,
- low cost software will cease to be available.
-
-
- Why pay at all?
- --------------------------------------------------------------
- * You receive a CURRENT copy of the program
- * You receive two printed manuals (Beginners Manual
- and User's Manual)
- * One year of technical support - by phone or written
- * Notification of updates and new versions
- * Inexpensive upgrade offers
- * Notification of new products
- * Periodic special price offers (for our registered users only)
- * Your input and ideas help shape future products
- * Access to the on-line ButtonWare Bulletin Board, which provides:
- - Information and announcements (on line)
- - Communication with other ButtonWare users
- - More technical support, and helpful tips/pointers
- * A sense of pride and ownership, by having honestly
- participated in the Shareware revolution
- * You help to keep software prices down, by supporting a
- distribution method which doesn't depend on expensive
- advertising campaigns.
-
- So please dive in and enjoy the fun of legally sharing good software with
- your friends and associates. But also be aware of the following
- restrictions, designed to protect the community of Shareware users and to
- prevent greedy people from taking unfair advantage of the trust, hard
- work, and good will of Shareware authors. Exceptions to these conditions
- must be received in writing from ButtonWare.
-
- 1. No price or consideration may be charged. However, a distribution cost may
- be charged for the cost of the diskettes, shipping, and handling, not to
- exceed $3 per diskette.
- 2. The files and programs on the disks may not be modified or deleted.
- 3. The programs cannot be sold as part of some other more inclusive package.
- 4. The programs cannot be "rented" or "leased" to others.
- 5. The end user must be told clearly in writing on the outside of the
- package and in all advertising that the diskette(s) are "Shareware."
- 6. The package must contain a written explanation that the diskettes are
- for evaluation purposes, and that an additional "registration fee" is
- expected by the author if the program is used beyond an initial
- evaluation period.
- 7. In the case of distribution via any telecommunications link
- the following must be done:
- * X-Modem or some other error checking protocol must be used
- * All ButtonWare programs (and documentation files) must be transferred
- in a library or archive format. That means the files have all been
- combined into one file.
- 8. If you're copying the disks for distribution to students in a classroom,
- you must provide them with the following written notice:
-
- +----------------------------------------------------+
- | These diskettes are distributed to you through the |
- | courtesy of (your school or instructor name) and |
- | Jim Button. No royalty nor registration fee has |
- | been paid for the programs, which are for your use |
- | and evaluation as a student. |
- | |
- | If you wish to receive technical support and |
- | announcements of updates and improvements, you |
- | must first become a "registered user." You do |
- | that by purchasing each program you plan to use - |
- | from an authorized dealer or directly from |
- | ButtonWare: |
- | |
- | Jim Button |
- | P.O. Box 96058 |
- | Bellevue, WA 98009 |
- | |
- | You may also purchase by calling the toll-free |
- | ButtonWare order line: 1-800-JBUTTON. |
- +----------------------------------------------------+
-
- 9. Shareware distribution is permitted only in the United States, Canada,
- England, and Australasia.
- 10. When PC-Type II is used on a network, one licensed copy of the program
- must be purchased for each station that uses PC-Type II. Please check
- the volume purchase discount schedule on the order form at the back of
- the manual.
-
-
- +-------------------------+
- | INSTALLING PC-Type II |
- +-------------------------+
-
- The PC-Type II system files are compressed into three files on your
- distribution diskettes. These files are PCT1, PCT2, and PCT3. These files
- must be "uncompressed" before you can use PC-Type II. The program
- INSTALL.EXE has been provided to install PC-Type II onto your hard drive.
-
- If you ordered PC-Type II on 3½" diskettes, you will receive two diskettes
- instead of three. Both the program and dictionary files are on the 3½"
- PROGRAM diskette. The utility files are on the UTILITY diskette.
-
- The file INST1.BAT is on the 3½" PROGRAM diskette and the file INST2.BAT is
- on the 3½" UTILITY diskette. These two files are only used to install
- PC-Type II on systems with no hard disk but two 3½" disk drives.
-
- When installation is completed, you will probably want to modify some of
- the default configuration settings. Do this by entering PC-Type II by
- typing PCT after the DOS prompt. Then press F2 to bring up the main menu
- and then press C to bring up the configuration menu.
-
- Special notice should ' be given to the (S)witches option in this menu. It
- is here that you can set the action of the Enter key, the insert shape and
- cursor location on entry, etc. (See your manual for configuration settings
- and options.) Printer escape codes can be created or modified with the
- (E)scape codes option.
-
- When you press Esc to exit the Configuration menu, you will be asked if you
- want to update your .PRO file. If you answer yes, enter the path and
- select the desired .PRO file and your profile file will be updated.
-
-
- +----------------------------------------+
- | INSTALLING PC-Type II to a hard disk |
- +----------------------------------------+
-
- To install PC-Type II, place the PC-Type II Program Disk in drive A. Then,
- at the A prompt, type A:INSTALL and press Enter. The INSTALL program
- installs the files on the PC-Type II disks to the drive and subdirectory
- you specify. 1170K of disk space is required to install all files.
-
- During the install process you will be asked if you want to move the major
- executable files to a directory specified in your path statement. If you
- answer NO, you should add the directory c:\pctype (or the directory you
- specified if not c:\pctype) to your path statement in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file.
-
-
-
- +------------------------------------------+
- | INSTALLING PC-Type II to 3½" diskettes |
- +------------------------------------------+
-
- To install PC-Type II to 3½" diskettes:
-
- (A) Format 3 diskettes to 720K (or more).
- (B) Label these diskettes as:
- (1) WORKING DISK
- (2) OTHER PGMS DISK
- (3) MISC DISK
- (C) Copy COMMAND.COM to the WORKING DISK.
- (D) Place the distribution PROGRAM disk into drive A.
- (E) Type A:INST1 after the DOS prompt and press Enter.
- (F) Follow the instructions on swapping disks.
- (Half way through the installation process you will be asked to
- place the UTILITY disk into drive A, type A:INST2 after the DOS
- prompt and press Enter.)
-
- Before running PC-Type II on your dual 3½" diskette system, you should make
- sure that you have an active PATH statement like
-
- PATH=A:\;B:\;
-
- It is recommended that you place this statement in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file.
-
- While you can set your own colors within PC-Type II, an initial color
- setting is provided for you in the file COLOR.PRO. If you wish to use this
- color setting, erase the file PCTYPE.PRO from your working disk and rename
- the file COLOR.PRO to PCTYPE.PRO. (The original PCTYPE.PRO sets all color
- options to black and white.)
-
-
- To run PC-Type II on your dual 3½" diskette system:
-
- (A) Place the WORKING disk into drive A. (Note that COMMAND.COM
- should be on this disk.)
- (B) Move to the B drive by typing B: after the DOS prompt and
- pressing Enter.
- (C) Insert the diskette with files to be edited into drive B.
- (D) Start PC-Type II by typing PCT filename as described in the
- manual.
-
- NOTE: Dual 3½" disk systems will not be able to use PCG2.EXE directly from
- inside PC-Type II because of disk space limitations.
-
-
- Following the instructions above on how to run PC-Type II on your dual 3½"
- diskette system, select your printer file and set the path to the Fault
- Finder by:
-
- (A) Place the MISC disk in drive B and the WORKING disk in A.
- (B) Move to the B: drive by typing B: after the prompt.
- (C) Copy the printer file (a file which has the extension .PRN)
- for your printer from the MISC disk to the WORKING disk.
- E.g.,
- copy b:epson.prn a:
-
- (D) Assuming you have set your PATH, type PCT after the
- DOS prompt.
- (E) Once inside PC-Type II:
- (1) press F2 (to bring up the main menu)
- (2) press C (to bring up the configuration menu)
- (3) press F (to bring up the file handling menu)
- (F) Press 2 (to define your printer file)
- (G) In the field provided, type A: and press Enter. (A new menu
- will appear with the .PRN file you moved to the A drive
- in step C above.)
- (H) Press Enter. (A message stating the file was successfully
- loaded should appear.)
- (I) Press Enter again to return to the Configuration menu.
- (J) Press F to bring up the file handling menu again.
- (K) Press 7 to define the path to the PC-Type II dictionary.
- (L) In the field provided, type A: and press Enter. (A new menu
- displaying the file PCTYPE.DIC will appear.)
- (M) Press Enter. (You will now be in the Configuration menu again).
- (N) Press Esc and you will be asked if you want to save the data to
- your .PRO file.
- (O) Press Y.
- (P) In the field provided, type A: and press Enter. (A new menu
- will appear containing the names of the .PRO files on your A:
- disk.)
- (Q) Select the file PCTYPE.PRO with the up/down arrow keys and then
- press Enter.
- (R) The file PCTYPE.PRO will now be updated with the paths to the
- dictionary and printer files. Press Enter to return to the
- PC-Type II screen.
- (S) Press F4 to quit the program.
-
-
- +----------------------------------------+
- | PRINTING A COPY OF THE USER'S MANUAL |
- +----------------------------------------+
-
- If you did not purchase PC-Type II (complete with printed manual) directly
- from ButtonWare or from an authorized dealer, then you are considered to be
- evaluating the program.
-
- We have tried to provide you with everything necessary to evaluate
- PC-Type II. The program utilizes clear, informative menus. Help screens are
- always available.
-
- This is sufficient for most people to do a good evaluation of the program.
- However, some people prefer to have a complete copy of the printed manual.
-
- A complete copy of the printed "User's Manual" for PC-Type II is available
- on floppy disk to help you with your evaluation of the program. It's about
- 300 pages long so you'll need a lot of time, patience, and paper to print
- it out.
-
- The User's Manual on disk has been mailed to all major computer clubs, user
- groups, shareware disk dealers and bulletin board operators that ButtonWare
- is aware of. You can obtain the User's Manual on disk from one of these
- groups. Just ask for PC-Type II disk number 4, or the PC-Type II manual on
- disk.
-
- In order to keep costs down, the document disk is not included with purchased
- copies of the program and cannot be purchased directly from ButtonWare.
- Purchased copies of PC-Type II include complete a printed copy of the User's
- Manual, typeset and bound.
-
-
-
- +---------------------------------+
- | NOTES AND UNDOCUMENTED FEATURES |
- +---------------------------------+
-
- 1. The EGA/VGA toggle has three line densities: 25, 35, and 43. On some
- EGA/VGA equipment, the middle density will not work properly because
- of variations in the ROM bios for those machines.
-
- 2. There are some other text files on the disk worth taking a look at:
- ORDER - Short review of ButtonWare products, and an order form
- RESPONSE - A user feedback survey. We really like to receive these
- from you.
-
- 3. If you place print markers (bold, underline, etc.), in your headers
- or footers, some care should be exercised in their placement if you
- use the "SWAP" option. Consider the following line in a header.
-
-
- swap \.<DATE*>\\page %\
- ^^ ^^^^ ^^
- AB CDEF GH
-
- Print markers placed on the backslashes at A,D,E, and H will not move when
- the information in the header line is swapped between even and odd pages.
- For example, if Underline is turned on at A and turned off at D, and Bold
- is turned on at E and off at H, then the date field will be underlined on
- odd pages and bolded on even pages, while the page number will be bold on
- odd pages and underlined on even pages.
-
- Print markers placed in the area between two backslashes will move with the
- data as the data is swapped. For example, if Underline is turned on at B
- and turned off at C, and Bold is turned on at F and off at G, the date
- field will always be underlined and the page number will always be bold.
-
- Print markers in headers and footers are represented in the .PRO files as:
- .<¿n> where n represents the markers position in the escape code table.
-
- NOTE: The colors the print markers make on your monitor may be modified
- in the "Escape codes" option of the Configuration menu. They have
- been set to grey on white for distribution.
-
-
- +------------------+
- | ALLDOS |
- +------------------+
-
- When you use the ALLDOS option in PC-Type II, the contents of memory is
- written to disk. This information is needed to reenter PC-Type II. It is
- stored in a file with a name like __nnnnnn where the n's will be a series
- of numbers. If you drop to DOS with this option and stay in DOS for a
- while, DO NOT erase or move this file. It will be deleted from your disk
- when you reenter PC-Type II with the EXIT command.
-
-
- +------------------+
- | GRAPHICS |
- +------------------+
-
- PC-Type II by itself will not "pull" the graphs created into your text
- files. There is, however, a program called "InSet" which will do this
- excellently, and will allow you to resize the PCG2.exe graph to fit into
- any area of your text file. It interfaces easily with PC-Type II. You
- may order InSet from Inset Systems Inc. by calling:
-
- (203) 775-5866
-
- or writing to:
-
- Inset Systems Inc.
- 71 Commerce Drive
- Brookfield, CT 06804
-
- Contact Inset Systems for the current price. It is a RAM resident program
- and occupies about 115K - 132K of memory. It can be "uninstalled". Should
- you decide to purchase this very useful program, make sure that your
- printer is supported. (Most printers are.)
