On at least two occasions, Jesus was silent during questioning. Before the Sanhedrin, Jesus "remained silent and gave no answer" (Mark 14:61). Also, to the astonishment of Pilate "Jesus still made no reply" (Mark 15:5). This made a large impression on Peter, as he wrote, "When they hurled their insults at him, he did not retaliate; when he suffered, he made no threats" (1 Peter 2:23).
