Under the terms of their covenant with God, the people of Israel carried certain obligations. Joshua exhorted them, "Be very strong; be careful to obey all that is written in the Book of the Law of Moses, without turning aside to the right or the left" (Josh. 23:6). In addition, he warned them against making alliances with the other nations or worshiping their gods.
