Forty years earlier, the Israelites gathered at the edge of the Promised Land, intending to enter and take possession (Num. 13-14). Twelve spies were sent into the land to gather information. They returned praising the bounty of the land, but ten of them expressed anxiety due to the size of the people and the strength of the cities. Only two of the spies, Joshua and Caleb, expressed confidence that God would provide victory.
