Before running The Risc Disc you may need to update your System with the
Sysmerge utility which is in the Install directory. If you have a Risc PC
then double-click on your !Boot directory and then click on the System option
and then drag the System Directory from the CD onto the System update window.
To run this CD click on the !RiscDisc3 icon and you will be presented
with an interactive guide to the contents of the CD.
This CD is designed to run best under Risc OS 3.5 or greater on a Risc PC with 4MB DRAM and at least 1MB VRAM. Some applications are also designed to run under Risc OS 3.1.
1. STRONGARM
---------
We have tried wherever possible to obtain updated versions from the authors
of StrongARM compatible versions. Where the program has found to NOT be compatible then you will see NON - STRONGARM logo on the page of the program
concerned. We have not had time to extensively test each program so it is possible that some may appear to work initially and then fail at later stages.
As always you are advised to contact the original author for updated versions.
The main programs which don't work with StrongARM are the demos, games and sound players which use DigitalSymphony or other players which are not SA compatible. Inside the INSTALL.modules directory on this CD you will find newer versions of these modules which may fix some of the problems. Due to time pressures we have not been able to try these ourselves.
This CD also contains updated code to enable the Risc Disc 1 and 2 to run correctly and to be able to access the ImageBank files and ArcFS archives on those CD's. So if you run Risc Disc 3 first you should find that Risc Disc 1 & 2 will then run OK as well.
2. Unknown file types
------------------
Whilst exploring the Risc Disc you may come across programs which have only a white box displayed as an icon. If you attempt to double click on these you will get an error message. This should not happen though as we have tried to include icons for all the files on the CD,
3. RUNNING FROM HARD-DISC
----------------------
Some contents of the disc are designed to be copied onto hard-disc before
use. But the primary aim is that the CD should avoid the need for you to hold
demos and utilities etc on your hard disc.
4. VIRUSES
-------
The contents of this disc have been scanned using !Killer Version 2.500 from
Pineapple Software for all currently known viruses.
5. RESOURCES
---------
Where possible we have tried to ensure that all programs use common resources
but you may find that if you are running a number of different demo's
successively that conflicting versions of some modules are loaded by different
applications. All applications have been tested to run individually but it is
impossible to check every possible combination of applications.
6. ARCFS ARCHIVES
--------------
To avoid problems with filenames not conforming to ISO formatting on the CD
you will notice that most applications are in ArcFS archives rather than
normal directories. As long as ArcFS is loaded then these archives may be
opened as normal by double-clicking. All the software on this disc may be run
either using the front end pages in the !RiscDisc3 application or directly
from the CD.
