  4. The Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) is a simple markup language used
  5. to create hypertext documents that are platform independent.  HTML
  6. documents are SGML documents with generic semantics that are
  7. appropriate for representing information from a wide range of
  8. domains. HTML markup can represent hypertext news, mail,
  9. documentation, and hypermedia; menus of options; database query
  10. results; simple structured documents with in-lined graphics; and
  11. hypertext views of existing bodies of information.

  13. HTML has been in use by the World Wide Web (WWW) global information
  14. initiative since 1990. This specification roughly corresponds to the
  15. capabilities of HTML in common use prior to June 1994. HTML is an
  16. application of ISO Standard 8879:1986 Information Processing Text and
  17. Office Systems; Standard Generalized Markup Language (SGML).

  19. The "text/html; version=2.0" Internet Media Type (RFC 1590)
  20. and MIME Content Type (RFC 1521) is defined by this specification.
