  6. In October 1994, I started my PhD at Southampton University in the
  7. Department of Electronics & Computer Science.  I am researching
  8. distributed business process support systems, currently looking at the
  9. building of systems supporting mathematical process definitions, defined in
  10. languages such as CSP (Communicating Sequential Processes) defined by C.A.R.
  11. Hoare.  I am based in the Mountbatten Building, named after Lord Louis
  12. Mountbatten, cousin of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II.

  15. <h3>First Degree</h3>

  17. I graduated in July 1994, also from Southampton University, with a First in
  18. Computer Systems Intergration.  During my time as an undergraduate I took a
  19. year out with International Computers Limited (ICL), working in a research
  20. group for the Retail Systems division in Bracknell, in the UK.  Immediately
  21. after my graduation, I started work on ArcWeb.  It's first major public
  22. showing was at Acorn World 94 (although a small number of people had earlier
  23. versions) and it has been featured on the Comms page of Acorn User and on
  24. the BBC television program <a
  25. href="http://www.bbcnc.org.uk/bbctv/childrens/blue_peter/">Blue Peter</a>.

  27. <h3>Life Story</h3>

  30. To complete the life story, I attended St. Olave's Grammar School, which is
  31. in Orpington, Kent which I represented at both rugby and atheletics.  Before
  32. that I was at Biggin Hill Junior School, and before that, at Biggin Hill
  33. Infant School.

  36. <h3>Biggin Hill</h3>
  37.  
  38. As you probably gathered, my parental home is in Biggin Hill, which is most
  39. well-known for its rôle in the Second World War as a key airfield in
  40. the defence of London. Although the RAF recently moved its Officer Training
  41. School elsewhere, the airport still hosts an annual International Air Fair in
  42. May or June.  If you have visited the Air Fair since 1983 and approached by
  43. car or coach from the Westerham direction, then you will have driven past my
  44. house, as our quiet little road can be opened up as an access road to the
  45. airport.
