- Perl 5
- ------
-
- This is RISC OS version 1.00 of Larry Wall's Perl based on the source for
- Perl 5.001. It appears to be working reasonably well, though there is plenty
- of scope for improvement and Acorn specific additions. It has been compiled
- using !UnixLib (3.6e) and hasn't had much else done to it at all, so it may
- be a bit of a loose cannon in that respect because by no means everything
- has been tested. As many unix functions have been left in as possible
- to facilitate the use of existing scripts without too much alteration.
- The standard manual files have been included. They are in html format so use
- !webster or a similar program to read them.
-
- I'm sorry the distribution is a bit rough at the moment, but I've not got a
- lot of time to spare (witness the deliberately tacky icons). I've had quite a
- lot of email asking about the port so the best thing seems to be to release
- it and let you all try it out. Then we can decide where to go from there
- based on what people want. Hopefully most perl users should know what they're
- up to from the start so the lack of documentation won't be too much of a
- problem. If you run into trouble I'll be pleased to answer any queries.
-
- Note that the executable is quite large ( >500K) so give it plenty of
- memory - ie. 1Mb or so and even more if you're running it under the
- debugger or interactively (perl -de 0). You may want to alter the
- setup in the boot file too to increase the wimpslot for when it's run
- in a task window.
-
- The next release should be more robust, once we've had a few suggestions and bug
- reports. Hopefully Perl5.002 will be out by then too.
-
- All the Best,
-
- Luke.
