  1. Troubleshooting chart
  2. ---------------------
  3. Below is a chart of common problems, and their cause and remedy.
  4. Symptoms marked with a (*) are Risc-OS error messages, or requests, and
  5. those with a (+) are messages that appear on the status bar of PT.

  7. Note: when told to enter CLI commands as a remedy, the CLI can be accessed
  8.       by pressing F12 from the desktop. The desktop can be accessed by
  9.       pressing the backtick key from within PT.

  11. Symptom                      | Cause/Remedy

  13. When I load a module, I get  | You are loading a file which is not a module
  14. an error.                    | (ie. a 'non-module'). Make sure the file that
  15.                              | you selected was actually the one that you
  16.                              | were trying to load.

  18. Some of my tracks have       | No, not forever they haven't. You are looking
  19. disappeared from the pattern | at a tune which has more than 4 tracks, and
  20. at the bottom of the screen. | PT has scrolled the display to show the other
  21.                              | tracks; look at the 'Track' display.

  23. Strange things appear on the | This is because some other programs do not
  24. end of my sample names       | clear the names when typing in a new one;
  25.                              | simply remove the useless data. Note however
  26.                              | that Tracker 1.0 tunes are stripped of this.

  28. When I have inserted a new   | You are using a PC disc without a volume name.
  29. disc, the directory isn't    | PT is referring to the first disc it saw
  30. right.                       | without a volume name, and not the current one

  33. The directory display        | Disc op. hides some files on purpose to
  34. doesn't show all the files.  | prevent confusing the user. eg. all group
  35.                              | directories aren't shown as individual dirs
  36.                              | if they contain no files, they are simply
  37.                              | ignored in the display.

  39. When I loaded a previously   | PT saves patterns from 0 up to and
  40. saved module, one of the     | including the highest pattern number used in
  41. patterns was missing.        | the sequence. If you had designed a pattern
  42.                              | but did not include it in the sequence
  43.                              | prior to saving, and it was numerically higher
  44.                              | than the highest in the sequence, then it will
  45.                              | not have been saved in the module.

  47. When I save a module, it     | The Save Samp.s submenu is set incorrectly.
  48. gets saved with the wrong    | Make sure that 'All' is ticked if you want
  49. number of samples.           | all 47 samples saved, the correct number is
  50.                              | ticked if you want that number saved, or
  51.                              | neither is ticked if you only want the samples
  52.                              | used to be saved. Note: you must click on the
  53.                              | number for it to be recognised!!

  55.                              | not fit; load a smaller module, or increase
  56.                              | PT's workspace next time.

  58. Sample: Too Big (+)          | You are loading a sample that is too big; it
  59.                              | must be smaler than 64K - perhaps you are
  60. Sample exceeds maximum       | trying to load a module as a sample; check
  61. length allowed (*)           | the loading type in Disc-op for internal
  62.                              | loading.

  64. Sample: No Room (+)          | There is not enough memory to load the
  65. No room for sample (*)       | desired sample! Increase PT's workspace!
  66. -----------------------------+-----------------------------------------------
  67. Sample not found (+)         | You have tried to load a sample that does not
  68.                              | exist. Make sure that the samplename is spelt
  69. Sample not found (*)         | correctly before clicking on the 'Load'
  70.                              | gadget. Make sure the file hasn't been deleted
  71.                              | by another program.
  72. -----------------------------+-----------------------------------------------
  73. No sample name! (+)          | You have tried to load or save a sample with
  74.                              | no name. Check if the sample number was really
  75.                              | the one you wanted to load/save, and that
  76.                              | it is not a blank ST-type name, eg. 'ST-99:'
  77. -----------------------------+-----------------------------------------------
  78. No song name! (+)            | You have tried to save a module without a
  79.                              | valid name. Make sure that the 'Song' field
  80.                              | on the mainscreen actually contains a name,
  81.                              | or contains more than just a prefix. eg. a
  82.                              | 'mod.' prefix must be followed by a name!!

  84. Can't find help! (+)         | You have installed a version of PT with no
  85. Unable to open helpfile!     | help file, or it is named wrongly. Check that
  86.   (occurs on the mainscreen) | a file called '!PTracker.PT·Help' exists, by
  87.                              | typing 'info !PTracker.*' from the CLI.
  88. -----------------------------+-----------------------------------------------
  89. Can't find cnfg! (+)         | You have installed a version of PT with no
  90.                              | config-00 file. This file is loaded to obtain
  91.                              | the default configuration (not essential!)
  92. -----------------------------+-----------------------------------------------
  93. Can't find dir! (+)          | You have requested a directory that is
  94.                              | unavailable. Make sure that the directory
  95.                              | hasn't been deleted by another program.
  96.                              | Make sure the device actually exists! (eg :4)
  97.                              | Make sure that there is a disc in the drive.
  98.                              | Make sure the disc has a root directory.
  99. -----------------------------+-----------------------------------------------
  100. Can't open file! (+)         | You have tried to load a file that is not
  101.                              | accessible. Check that the file has not been
  102.                              | deleted by another program. Check that the
  103.                              | file has read attributes, by typing
  104.                              | 'info <file>' from the CLI. If it hasn't, type
  105.                              | 'access <file> rw/r' from the CLI. Check also
  106.                              | that the file isn't already open. If so, type
  107.                              | 'shut' from the CLI.
  108. -----------------------------+-----------------------------------------------
  109. Loading aborted! (+)         | You have selected not to load a file.
  110.                              | This could be the result of the file not being
  111.                              | a recognised filetype.
  112. -----------------------------+-----------------------------------------------
  113. Can't load DskT (+)          | The module you are trying to load is a
  114.                              | 'Desktop Tracker' format module, and cannot
  115.                              | be loaded in the version of PT you are using!
  116. -----------------------------+-----------------------------------------------
  117. Can't kill zero! (+)         | You have attempted to kill sample zero.
  118.                              | Change to the correct sample number, and
  119.                              | try again!
  120. -----------------------------+-----------------------------------------------
  121. Not sample zero! (+)         | You have attempted an operation with sample
  122.                              | zero. Change to the correct sample number, and
  123.                              | try again!
  124. -----------------------------+-----------------------------------------------
  125. Not enough mem! (+)          | There is not enough memory to claim space
  126.                              | for the disc op. directory. Free some up
  127.                              | and click 'Disc op.' again.
  128. -----------------------------+-----------------------------------------------
  129. Please insert disc '...' (*) | The filer has requested that you insert the
  130.                              | disc specified. If you want to abandon the
  131.                              | operation that caused the request, then click
  132.                              | on 'Cancel', otherwise, insert the disc!!!
  133. -----------------------------+-----------------------------------------------
  134. Disc not found (*)           | You did not insert the disc that the filer
  135. Disc not present (*)         | wanted. Click 'OK' and retry the operation
  136.                              | if you have decided you want to this time!
  137. -----------------------------+-----------------------------------------------
  138. Drive empty (*)              | You tried to perform an operation on a drive
  139.                              | that contains no disc. It would help if there
  140.                              | was a disc in the drive!
  141. -----------------------------+-----------------------------------------------
  142. Access violation (*)         | The file that you have tried to access do not
  143.                              | have the correct attributes.
  144.                              | Try typing 'access <file> wr/r' from the CLI.
  145. -----------------------------+-----------------------------------------------
  146. Bad name (*)                 | The filename that you have used is not valid
  147.                              | for the filing system that you are using.
  148.                              | Make sure that the filename is of the correct
  149.                              | length, and doesn't contain any special
  150.                              | characters. Also try 'configure truncate'
  151.                              | from the CLI.

  153. Not implemented (+)          | You have tried to use a feature that is not
  154.                              | available in the version of PT that you are
  155.                              | using. Upgrade to a better version!
