  4. This application is to change from an external to the internal screen on an
  5. A4 portable in the event of a sudden power cut. Not for use on computers not
  6. fitted with an LCD display
  7.  
  8. Why?
  9. In theory the A4 portable running form the mains contains its own
  10. uninteruptable power supply. However this is of little use in a power cut if
  11. you are using an external screen as you cannot switch easily between the two.
  12.  
  13. Try this brief experiment:
  14. Make sure your battery is not completely flat, then with your computer
  15. connected to an external monitor, walk over to the wall socket & switch of
  16. the power to your computer system (make sure you don't switch of anyone
  17. else's or you may be unpopular). Your unsaved work is perfectly safe until
  18. your battery power runs out, but apart from pressing f3-enter to save from
  19. the file with input focus you cannot save any of your work until the power is
  20. restored, which may be several hours longer than the life of your battery.
  21. Now switch the power back on and breathe a sigh of relief.

  23. So that you don't get caught out in a real power cut, Install this
  24. application in the ROOT directory of your hard disc and make sure that it is
  25. the configured drive with the command '*Configure drive 4'.
  26. In a power cut you will have to run the application without the aid of the
  27. mouse so memorise this key sequence:
  28. 1)  Press f12 (fn-f2)
  29. 2)  Press ! (shift 1)
  30. 3)  Press enter three times.
  31. Practice this until you can do it with your eyes closed (you may not be able
  32. to see the keys in a power cut). you can now save your work or continue
  33. working from the internal screen. I hope you never have to use this.
