- I have given up on DVIALW due to mysterious problems like this. I was
- also getting fatal errors in findpost() once in a while. If I made
- some superficial change to the document that made a slightly different
- output (rephrasing a sentence, expanding a contraction, changing
- punctuation, etc.) the problem would just as mysteriously disappear.
- We never found the cause or a better solution to this problem.
- Instead, a couple of years ago we switched to DVIPS. We haven't had a
- single problem with it yet.
-
- It is bundled with TeX on one of the DECUS library tapes. Although
- I'm not quite sure where this may reside out there in cyberspace, I'm
- sure someone must carry it on an FTP site. You might try the
- comp.text.tex FAQ before you go bugging the following people. For
- what it's worth, here's the address of the guy who wrote the VMS
- version's installation notes:
-
- |Robert Schneider | Internet: robert@perv.pe.utexas.edu|
- |Department of Petroleum Engineering | BITNET: pefv673@utchpc |
- |University of Texas at Austin | THEnet: PERV::ROBERT |
-
- Also, the address of the guy who (apparently) did the initial VMS
- port:
-
- Xev Gittler
- GTE Laboratories, Inc.
- xev@bunny.gte.com
-
- There are all kinds of other reasons for using DVIPS instead of
- DVIALW. Grok this list of features:
-
- - Automatic generation of fonts via MF whenever needed
- - EPSF PostScript files complete with automatic determination
- of graphics size (see epsf.tex)
- - Literal PostScript includes complete with definitions
- - Non-EPSF PostScript graphics with user-specified scaling
- - TPIC specials
- - Correct budgeting of printer memory
- - Output at 300 or 400 DPI (or any other DPI)
- - Use of PostScript fonts
- - Use of virtual fonts
- - Use of popen on output file.
-
- By the way, does anyone know if there is a later version of this out
- there? Just trying to keep up-to-date. Mine appears to be version
- 5.47 which came out in February of 91.
-
- Ben.
